I was born in 1970 so basically my memories of the 70s are all from a little kid's perspective.

I remember watching on T.V. Donny and Marie, The 6mil $ Man, Buck Rogers, Battle Star Galactica. MY parents listened to Neil Sedaka, the guy who sounded like a woman when he sang. My older brother was into Led Zepplin and Aerosmith. I liked those bands too. I remember coveting my brother's BMX bike. I wasn't allowed to have a boy's bike. -_- I also remember buying packs of firecrackers for 5 cents from a guy down the street. It's funny the things that make an impression on you when you are a kid.

I'm right there with you (1972). I loved my Honeycomb license plate, big wheel and my goloshes that said "left, right'. I also loved, LOVED the Brady Bunch and remember every episode.

Born in the 70s! Damn you people make me feel old!

In 1974 I was 10, and in love with my older brother's 1970 Barracuda (http://www.classiccarsplus.net/thecars/1970%20plymouth%20barracuda/1970%20BARRACUDA%20FOR%20SALE%20(11).JPG).

By 1976, it was Charlie's Angels (http://oxfordfilmfreak.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/charlies-angels.jpg)- the start of my lifelong crush on Jaclyn Smith.

LOVED hash
hung out at a bar where a local biker gang hung out at
drank myself stupid every night. They took care of me because they knew my brother had just committed suicide in a very violent way
wore fringe jackets and Billy Jack hats
skinny dipped in the moonlight with other pot heads
watched the cranes at night in the quarries where we parked and fucked
listened to I can fly like an eagle while hotrodding down dirt country roads LONG before Starsky and Hutch was even a glimmer in some producer's eye
cant remember the music of the 70s until I hear it. Lots of black outs turned into memory loss...
made love in cornfields when the clover was in and the ground wasnt tore up yet
Burger King and McDonalds still served only beef and fish.
Barbie was queen
love beads died out and were replaced with mood rings

I fell in love at 16 with a girl from another school. It ended in heartbreak when she told her parents about us and then went off to Vermillion to college. I drove a '66 cherry red Mustang my senior year and discovered the late Richard Brautigan. I smoked hash, did speed and mescalin and I went to the gay bar underaged every Saturday night until "Tank" the bouncer found out and banned us. It was a dark, seedy basement bar called "The Cave" and I always swore that if there was ever a fire, you'd never die from the blaze, you'd die from being trampled by queens in their high heels.

Some of the best times for me were in the 70s with great friends and concerts and parties. On my 30th reunion, I "outed" myself and no one batted an eye.

Isn't the passage of time amazing? Below, me at 16 and 52.

I was that folkie chick that hung out with the band geeks and the NHS nerds. I wore clogs and love beads and wished I'd been born early enough to participate in the 60's. (missed it by thatmuch and was born in '61).

I was a Harry Chapin groupie as much as I could be (went to three or four concerts) and cried the day he died (8/18/85 in case anyone cares.) I spent my summers jumping off a rope into the bayou or canoeing down that same bayou by myself to read books.

The 70's were Steely Dan and Linda Rondstadt. I'm still a folkie chick at heart.

Jesus Christ Superstar is the first rock song I actually learned on the piano :)

I sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" for entertainment at our 10th grade talent show.

I drank Slow Gin Fizzes that tasted like carnations. I carried a flask for a while in my purse.

Wore chokers made of pukka shells, had mood rings, scratch and sniff shirts.....bell bottoms, platform shoes and like a million earing's.

Was and am a huge Beatles Fan and in the late 70's discovered Pink Floyd.

Watched every episode of Wonder Woman and Charlie's Angels.

Had red white and blue shoes and shorts in 1976. Remember Bicentennial Moments on TV?

Tap Danced to "Joy to the World" in 2nd grade, still love 3 Dog Night.

Sat on the hood of my car and smoked cigarettes. Drank Canadian Club (for some unknown reason) and drag raced my dad's Caprice which had a 405 engine and blew Trans Ams off the road.

Sneaked and read the dirty parts from Jaws and Other Side of Midnight.

Skipped school to work on my tan.

Had feathered hair.

Never got in trouble because I looked so innocent.

I understand that, I missed part of the 80's myself. Didn't work for 3 years, but always had more money in my pockets than my friends that did work. One day reality comes along to slap me in the face and all of a sudden I'm a mature grown up, lol. Drugs unless a script no longer have a place in my life.

Funny memory about Donna Summer's 'Love to Love You, Baby'. I was working with a gal also named Donna Summer who was also a singer. When this song came out...her grandmother (Penticostal beliefs) thought it was her on the radio...grans came into work and proclaimed to my coworker...you are going straight to hell!....
Love that hip-grinding song! Is there anyone over 50 that didn't bump and grind to this song?

The 70s were some of the best times of my life.
I knew all kinds of people from all backgrounds and learned to grow up in the fast lane.

To think of the 70s brings to mind so many people I knew, Michael being one of them.

He was gay and very tall with an afro and he was a music fanatic collecting music—even more than I did.
He always bragged about owning something like 5,000 albums. I didn't envy him because he lived on the third floor.
His apartment had a wall of albums from floor to ceiling. Can you imagine when he moved?

One day, he came in the studio to ask if he could buy a rare album by the Delfonics, I think we traded something.
But I'll never forget how excited he was to get a copy of whatever it was after he'd looked all over the country for it.
Small memories can be amazing. To this day, whenever I think of the Delfonics, I think of Michael, and his albums,
and the 70s and all the people, and the way life was then.....

...anyway it was a hot summer night around 7 and my friend
Dave and me were headed to a concert downtown.
Jethro Tull and Black Oak Arkansas, I think.
Whatever, it was a shitty concert.

So there we were in his little baby blue
Volkswagon with bout about 3 rolled joints.
We're doing about 75 down the interstate
headed for the auditorium and I'm
lightin' up and we're toking and passing
a joint back in forth...

Pretty soon,

up along his side and
my side, there were the Hells Angels.
Big ol' hogs and they're pointing at
us and trying to get our attention.

Well...

you don't ignore the fuckin' Hells Angels when
you're in a sissy-ass Volkswagon, you know?
And you don't try to outrun 'em or
be a smart-ass when you're 17.
Dave is like, "oh shit...!"
I'm like, "no shit...!"

We rounded the bend on the
interstate with a biker escort that wouldn't
leave and I said, "Maybe we should offer the pot!"
Dave's like, "yeah offer the pot....fast...!!!"

So I lean out my window to offer
a joint to this biker and he moved in right
and takes it..." Then he pulls back,
and starts grinning and kinda high-fives'
it with an okay and Dave gets
a charge out of the deal...and laughs
his ass off...

Okay, I yelled, "give that biker on your side
a joint..."

So Dave reaches out and hands
the biker on his side a joint.

Winds blowing, music's blaring
on a summer night in a little baby blue Volkswagon,
and we're laughing and losing our pot
to the Hell's Angels.

Finally, they pulled in front and
took off with about 10 more of
them behind us, pulling up and around
to take off for the high country,
I suppose.

As for a shitty concert and losing
our pot and damn near our lives,

well,

we just kept on smilin'....

I love all that music, but nothing could make me 'get up and boogie', like DISCO!!! Disco was KING, and I loved it -and still do!! I danced my a-- off!! I loved all of it, Donna Summer was THE QUEEN, but then there were so many others...wish we could bring a little bit of that back.

A collection from many people and site...lol

What new slang was introduced during the 70s that you can think of? This is a list of all the words that were in popular usage during the 70s.

skinney
real deal or truth ex "let me give you the slinney on the deal"

' Can You Dig It'
Do you understand? " Can you dig it man?"

' Psyche'!!!
To trick someone. To b.s. someone. As if to psyche them out.

'Bogue'
Used to describe something offensive or an unrealistic idea. "That's so Bogue" or "That's Bogue" or "Bogue, man..."

'Bootin'
as in; Are you going Bootin? "I'm going Roller Bootin" or rollerskating

The 'Crib' and going to the 'Gig'
The "crib" was going home or to someone else's house, and "gig" was work or job.

'Don't Be Such A 'spaz'
A 'spaz' was someone that was accident prone, clutsy, or just acting stupid.

'Dream On'
a term used to get someone down to earth, or tell them they are being unrealistic about something, e.g. when someone would say, "I'm getting a brand new car!" you'd respond, "Yeah, right; dream on man!"

'Far Out'
cool

'Good night, John-boy.'
An annoying phrase popularized by the entire cast of "the Waltons" -- except by John-boy" (Richard Thomas) himself.

'In Your Face!' (or simply, 'Face!')
I have succeeded in embarrassing or up-staging you (usually as through an exceptional play in basketball).

'Lay A Gasser'
to fart.

'May The Force Be With You'
The most popular line from one of the greatest movies of the 70s(and of all time) StarWars.

'Phony'
To describe an overbearing, "two faced", or deceitful person or thing. Also: "Phony Baloney" which then became: "Baloney" which is an active form, used to instantly dismiss the phony person or utterance.

'That's Sick!'
A Midwestern phrase in the late 70's. To describe something odd or unusual. Not necessarily an person or object of distaste, but something suspect but also intriguing. "Sick!"

'The Man'
the man to me means any authority, corporations, police, government, they're all the man tho first used in the 60's by the hippies it live through the 70's,80's,90's and still to this day

Lady Pamela

2nt post

'To The Max'!
Take it to the maximum. The best it can be.

'You Know'
This was said at the end of nearly every sentence :)

'You're So Stunned'
Meaning the person acted or said something stupid, dumb.

'Your Mama'
"Your Mama" was said a lot of my school, with also "Joe Mama." With "Happy Days" that brought us the word "Nerd" which was VERY popular.

'book' Or 'booking'
to run quickly, usually away from something. (ie The cops were after hi so he was booking down the street.)

'bunny'
a cute girl

'catch You On The Flip~side'
see you later

'cheese-eater'
I'm pretty sure the definition you list for a brown-noser - "cheesier" - is in fact supposed to be "cheese-eater." I've heard cheese-eater used numerous times as a synonym for a suck-up, but never cheesier. Is it possible that someone mis-heard "cheese-eater" and just always heard it as "cheesier"?

'chill' 'be Cool'
relax, man!

'city'
everything had "city" after it. That was cool-city.

'fab'
same as fabulous. ex: "that movie was fab"

The use of "izz" is still popular. c"izz"ash= cash fo' sh"izz"le= for sure b"izz"o= bitch b"izz"nitch= bitch r"izz"ide= ride(car) sm"izz"oke= smoke "izz"ass= ass ......and so one. It's like pig latin, really fun, you should try it out.

'keep On Truckin''
go w/ the flow

'like'
Beginning every sentence with "like". "Like we went to the mall and like I saw him looking at me."

'like'
I do believe the term 'like' was used in the 70s by Americans and has been used ever since. Recently the British have adopted the phrase especially since the popularity of cult sitcom 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S'. The phrase is used in various ways usually by teeneagers and 20 somethings who automatically, subcociuously add a toutch of 'trendiness' to thier sentances. For instance: "Like, let's get outa here!" "Like, no way!" "This is like way cool guys"

'looo-king Gooood!'
a phrase popularized by the late Freddie Prinz Sr. on the tv sitcom "Chico and the man."

'putz'
jEWISH SLANG FOR SOMEONE WHO A CONSTANT SCREW UP OR FOUL UP OR JUST BEING A JERK

'right On' !!
Right on--was a slang used for hep people when you agreed to something ex: Are you going to the club tonight--Right on!

'to The Max.'
Taken to an extreme. As in: That dude is so bitchen, to the max.

'what It Is, What It Is'
a greeting usually meaning,"hey", "What's up?"

...with
Ending a question or sentence using the word "with" has been used in the communities of the mid-west since the early 70's. The most common questions I remember asking are; "ya wanna go with?" or "can I go with?"

God, I miss her.

How often we went out and ended up getting so drunk and trying to eat breakfast at 3 in the morning.
It was part of the Saturday night rituals like cranking good rock n' roll and flying down the old Peetz highway on a summer night.

I miss you so much sweetheart,
and I'm thinking if only I could of had one more night to say goodbye.

...anyway it was a hot summer night around 7 and my friend
Dave and me were headed to a concert downtown.
Jethro Tull and Black Oak Arkansas, I think.
Whatever, it was a shitty concert.

So there we were in his little baby blue
Volkswagon with about 3 rolled joints.
We're doing about 75 down the interstate
headed for the auditorium and I'm
lightin' up and we're toking and passing
a joint back in forth...

Pretty soon,

up along his side and
my side, there were the Hells Angels.
And they're pointing at
us and trying to get our attention.

Well...

you don't ignore the fuckin' Hells Angels when
you're in a sissy-ass Volkswagon, you know?
And you don't try to outrun 'em or
be a smart-ass when you're 17.
Dave is like, "oh shit...!"
I'm like, "no shit...!"

We rounded the bend on the
interstate with a biker escort that wouldn't
leave and I said, "Maybe we should offer the pot!"
Dave's like, "yeah offer the pot....fast...!!!"

So I lean out my window to offer
a joint to this biker and he moved in right
and takes it..." Then he pulls back,
and starts grinning and kinda high-fives'
it with an okay and Dave gets
a charge out of the deal...and laughs
his ass off...

Okay, I yelled, "give that biker on your side
a joint..."

So Dave reaches out and hands
the biker on his side a joint.

Wind's blowing, music's blaring
on a summer night in a little baby blue Volkswagon,
and we're laughing and losing our pot
to the Hell's Angels.

Finally, they pulled in front and
took off with about 10 more of
them behind us, pulling up and around
to take off for the high country,
I suppose.

As for a shitty concert and losing
our pot and damn near our lives,

well,

we just kept on smilin'....

Fair enough. I had a few different dress styles. Butch in Urban Land. But I will admit I don't know much about the cowboy look. That was another 70s phenomena, the movie "Urban Cowboy" came out and all of a sudden there were gay cowboy clubs all over Southern California. I feel pretty sure most of the urban cowboys would not know the back end of a horse if it were staring them in the face.

The Killing of Georgie Parts 1 and 2

YouTube- Rod Stewart - The killing of Georgie

In these days of changing ways
so called liberated days
a story comes to mind of a friend of mine

Georgie boy was gay I guess
nothin' more or nothin' less
the kindest guy I ever knew

His mother's tears fell in vain
the afternoon George tried to explain
that he needed love like all the rest

Pa said there must be a mistake
how can my son not be straight
after all I've said and done for him

Leavin' home on a Greyhound bus
cast out by the ones he loves
A victim of these gay days it seems

Georgie went to New York town
where he quickly settled down
and soon became the toast of the great white way

Accepted by Manhattan's elite
in all the places that were chic
No party was complete without George

Along the boulevards he'd cruise
and all the old queens blew a fuse
Everybody loved Georgie boy

The last time I saw George alive
was in the summer of seventy-five
he said he was in love I said I'm pleased

George attended the opening night
of another Broadway hype
but split before the final curtain fell

Deciding to take a short cut home
arm in arm they meant no wrong
A gentle breeze blew down Fifth Avenue

Out of a darkened side street came
a New Jersey gang with just one aim
to roll some innocent passer-by
There ensued a fearful fight
screams rang out in the night
Georgie's head hit a sidewalk cornerstone

A leather kid, a switchblade knife
He did not intend to take his life
He just pushed his luck a little too far that night

The sight of blood dispersed the gang
A crowd gathered, the police came
An ambulance screamed to a halt on Fifty-third and Third

Georgie's life ended there
but I ask who really cares
George once said to me and I quote

He said "Never wait or hesitate
Get in kid, before it's too late
You may never get another chance
'Cos youth a mask but it don't last
live it long and live it fast"
Georgie was a friend of mine

Oh Georgie stay, don't go away
Georgie please stay you take our breath away
Oh Georgie stay, don't go away
Georgie please stay you take our breath away
Oh Georgie stay, don't go away
Georgie, Georgie please stay you take our breath away
Oh Georgie stay

Simple Man

The first time I fell deeply and innocently in love I was 16.
Her name was Ali. And she was beautiful.
She gave me a hollowed blue egg on which she had written
a poem by Wordsworth in calligraphy.

I still have it.

I had never loved like I loved then.
It took nearly 4 years to get over her.
This was her favorite song by Graham Nash.

I remember pulling the 6 to midnight shift at a black radio station.
It wasn't called urban back then, just black radio.

Folks in the african american community kept the lines busy all night with requests
and the later it got in the evening, the more the slow jams poured in by request.

A hot summer night and folkd on the north side of the city jammed on every parking lot and
street corner to have a beer party.

The request line would ring and....
"I want to dedicate this to my man" or "how 'bout somethin' sweet for my lady, ya understand?"

"Okay, how 'bout the Dramatics tonight?

"Yeah, well that's cool. Just keep it sweet and groovin, y'all."
And tell my baby it's goin' out to her from Maurice, her main squeeze, you dig?"

"I dig, Maurice. It'll come up around 20 after the hour."

"Sho' nuff...catch ya all later, and keep the jams slow for my blow...."

So nice to be put in 'the groove' so early in the day. Now, this IS music!!! Love those 70's jams - soul and R&B at it best!!

Here's my contribution - to me, one of the best. Beyonce made a very good cover, but there's nothing like the original!

Lillie, I too lived in the projects in Manhattan - Jacob Riis Projects on the Lower East Side. My mom lived in that apartment for 35 years!! That's where we grew up.

Your post brought back such memories. I grew up in the 50's, way before you were born, and I dare say, more innocent times. But I too had to get in the house before the streetlights went on, I too yelled for change when the Good Humor, or the other one (Mr. Softy?) came 'round. Mom would wrap the change in a small paper bag - no plastic bags then - or a small rag, and throw it down. We used to play Skelly (melted wax in bottlecaps to weight them down), hopscotch, kick-the-can, double-Dutch jumprope, jacks, red-light-green-light one two three, roller skates - the kind that had a key, were all metal, and were very noisy, and so many other games. It was so much fun. No kids I know today do that sort of thing - they're all behind computers now. It's no wonder kids are overweight and out of shape - they sit all day!!

Thanks for the memories, Lillie - you made my day!!

WOW..skelly!..we use to melt crayons into bottle caps...holy shit that seriously was a memory tucked away..I grew up on Staten Island in the Todt Hill Projects....red light green light..mother may I...truth or dare..back when it was innocent..YAH RIGHT..haha...my mom threw down the money and we hunted like crazed animals for those shiny quarters lol...but remember getting halfway there and you heard her voice calling you back...(amazing how no matter where in the projects you were..you heard your momma calling you LOL ) all because she decided she wanted an ice cream too! lol...wow I feel 10 yrs old again..I loved that tim mcgraw song...that was the first time a song truly brought me back to the projects.. ( I will post the lyrics at the end ) My father owned the local laundromat in south beach (staten Island) we use to go down to the south beach rides then run back up the hill to get a dr pepper or orange fanta out of my dads pop machine...and oh my god we thought we died and gone to candy heaven when he put in a candy machine..of course since he owned it..we had the keys..i ate rolo's and drank orange fanta till i puked lol...of course the endless amount of energy and eating honey suckle and picking blueberries on top of the soda and rolo's did not help the belly! LOL

so here is the song that is soooooooo very true!!

Don't you remember
The fizz in a pepper
Peanuts in a bottle
At ten, two and four
A fried bologna sandwich
With mayo and tomato
Sittin' round the table
Don't happen much anymore

We got too complicated
It's all way over-rated
I like the old and out-dated
Way of life

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

I love my records
Black, shiny vinyl
Clicks and pops
And white noise
Man they sounded fine
I had my favorite stations
The ones that played them all
Country, soul and rock-and-roll
What happened to those times?

I'm readin' Street Slang For Dummies
Cause they put pop in my country
I want more for my money
The way it was back then

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

Give me a flat top for strumming
I want the whole world to be humming
Just keep it coming
The way it was back then

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

I was a teenager in high school in the 1970s.

I used to braid my long hair in about one million little braids right before I went to bed, and

When I woke up, my hair would be crimped and wild.

I used to wear a leotard with bell bottom pants and wide flat suede shoes.

There was an article in the newspaper about how

We were all lesbians at the public single sex high school I attended.

Obviously girls who care about school must be lesbians.

I was born in '63 so the 70's were my real formative years. Here in the UK I remember strikes, The Winter of Discontent and man-made fabrics (not to mention the static that goes with them) and being mean, in a big sister way, to my brothers.

I think I alternated between wide eyed ingenue and jaded stoner (aka freak, in my neck of the woods) through most of that decade.

Bumping/resurrecting this thread from a few years ago. Members my age use to post about great times here from their experiences in the 70s. The 1970s were some of the greatest times in my life. In the past year, I have revisited people and times I haven't thought of in more than 30 years. Feels good. In the 1970s, I met Joel Grey, saw Bette Midler, and met Marvin Gaye and Grover Washington Jr. I entered a career in broadcasting at 17, my favorite movie was Chinatown, and I came out at 16 and never looked back. In the 70s, I discovered my maleness...long before any of this politically-correct/labeling shit; none of this bullshit is new to me, I'm just a natural male . I started deep street shit before half of you were in diapers frequenting underground bars. I had one affair after another in my youth. I was vocal then and I'm a forerunner and pioneer in vocalizing my sexuality during a decade when it was considered taboo and unheard of. I was the first in my community to be open about my male sexuality blowing away my upper-class family and the majority of the gay community when shit like this belonged to men only. Fuck that, I turned heads and created controversy. The parties and sex were endless; balls for days with fun that lasted for 20 years. I spent 12 years in broadcasting stemming from the mid-70s. The 70s were the best times of my life and I formed life-long friendships in the 1970s that I hold today.

My mom took me with her to see the The Godfather in 1972. I was all of 15 and a sophomore in high school. When we walked out of theater, I remember saying, "Mom, I feel like I'm going to be shot." She put her arm around me and we walked to the car. Then, we headed to the House of Pies for dessert and coffee. She died unexpectedly in 2001, and she was my best friend.

Really? More of this? What is a "natural male?" Is that in contrast to the "politically correct/labeling shit"? And who might that be? Transmen who are queer or who are politically active or who talk about gender in an open way. We have some of those folks here. Your comments are unclear enough for me to only suspect who you are dissing. But that's my guess.

And what is male sexuality? Being male does not say anything about your sexuality. Are you also speaking for gay men? You know about their sexuality? You can speak for them too?

Being a natural male means you fuck a lot of people? Is that what you are saying? If that isn't heteronormative, I don't know what is.

SO. TIRED. OF. THIS. FROM. YOU. OR. ANYONE.

I would like to respond to this again. What are you saying a "natural male" is? Someone who fucks lots of women? Someone who is not into "politically-correct/labeling shit," whatever that is? I am assuming it might include being respectful toward women and even people of color since that is not a priority of yours.

Again, male sexuality . . . what on earth does that mean? What "shit" are you talking about? Because once again, your post -- to the extent it can be deciphered -- sounds deeply heteronormative and arrogantly sexist.

In memory of my friend, Patrick

______________________

Pat, how often I have thought of you through the years and how much I have wanted a few more hours, days— times reminiscent of the youngest and happiest times of my life with you. We owned the world then, or so we thought. I have missed you—high school, the bar, parties, the music, and those talks long into the morning until sunrise.

It's been nearly 40 years, and I'm thinking of you more than ever. Friends ask, but I tell them I was never able to find you again. At times, I just close my eyes and go back to a winter night with you, when the snow fell silently, listening to you share your deepest secrets over wine and music. Your loves and hopes and desires...and...

and I can still see you in the kitchen opening another bottle of wine that night. Oh, the agony of a time long past, and the ecstasy of remembering as though it were yesterday. The world was innocent—and different and safer then.

I never stopped loving you, and it's so hard to miss you. Thank you for some of the best times of my life and the ecstasy of being young and free.

Beads hanging in my doorway, a happy face light shade, a chain of old beer tabs strung around the room. Black light posters, an TV with an orange case, a record player that I played non stop and my own little place in this world. :-). I am thankful for those years. :-)
