I love Gordon Parks. I once bought about a dozen copies of "A Star for Noon" and presented them to my closest friends.

"Now here in this place where spring has buried winter, the despair that threatened our Eden is a forgotten word. Having stolen Heaven from the Gods, I feel no guilt for it. If you would have a star for noon, it shall be yours."

Improvisations in Time: Eugene J. Martin and the Masur Museum of Art

gxMJysGes6g

The Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, Louisiana, celebrates the recent acquisition of twenty-four works of art from the estate of the artist Eugene J. Martin (1938-2005) with a solo exhibit entitled "Improvisations in Time: Eugene J. Martin and the Masur Museum of Art". The exhibit showcases ~70 graphite and pen & ink drawings, mixed media works and collages, paintings on paper and canvas, and photographs on loan from the Louisiana State University Museum of Art, Baton Rouge LA, and the Estate of Eugene J. Martin. All works were created in Washington D.C., Chapel N.C. and Lafayette LA between 1960's and 2003. The exhibit takes over the Museum's three floors.

visual artist Eugene J. Martin at work, 1992

1rEZTZamVcM

Martin studied painting at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington D.C. His often humorous and highly abstract paintings, collages, drawings, and photographs primarily deal with the concepts of time and memory. He has exhibited at the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, MS; Louisiana State University Museum of Art, LA; Walter Anderson Museum of Art, MS; New Orleans African American Museum, LA; Lilly Gallery, Duke University; Michel Rooryck Gallery, Ghent, and Oudenaarde Town Hall, Belgium; and the Acadiana Center for the Arts, Lafayette LA, among others. Martin's art also resides in the permanent collections of the Munich Museum of Modern Art, Munich, Germany; Ogden Museum of Southern Art, LA; University of Delaware Museums, DE; Schomburg Center for Black Culture, NY; Sheldon Museum of Art, NE; Stowitts Museum, CA; Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art, Savannah GA; Mobile Museum of Art, AL, among others.

Curator Benjam Hickey writes in the Exhibition's catalogue that "On the surface, Eugene J. Martin's work appears to be an after-the-fact riff on modernism driven abstraction. His work is related to this tradition, but is something more. Martin was an accomplished Jazz musician and incorporated his experience of rhythmic improvisation also associated with High Modernism or Abstract Expressionism as a means of illustrating the irregular, non-linear, but cyclical manner humans perceive, understand, and experience the world around them. He used biomorphic and quasi-mechanical abstractions to create this link with the physical perceived world, but warped them to reference the slipstream nature of consciousness as well. The improvisational language Martin ascribed to any moment or period of time plays back into how he considered his oeuvre. He conceived of it as fluid and let it be guided directly by variables such as access to art making materials dictated by his financial means, a passing interest in any given media or subject matter, and his mood. He would also muddle the chronology of his work by creating new work to add on to old pieces, dismantle a completed artwork and incorporate it into several works, or do the same with photographs of his art. This totally integrated art practice is what makes Martin stand apart from other artists; his improvisations were rigorous and permeated his entire decision making process."

I first saw this painter's work in Provincetown. I admire it even more than I did twenty years ago.

His canvasses are still so fresh and alive; the way he captures light is stunning. These jpegs might as well be done in tones of beige; they do his work no justice.

Seeing his paintings in person is like sitting in the front row of a live symphony performance as they perform your favorite piece.

One of my favorite museums in the world, The Tate Modern, is a renovated turbine hall; what was once a decrepit symbol of industrialism is now an icon in London and has some of the most unique and special exhibition spaces in the world. And like all museums in the UK, admission is free.

Eliason is the artist that created the Waterfalls in New York a few years ago, he's also has permanent pieces in SF MoMA among other great collections.

And I experienced one of my favorite sculptors Anish Kapoor in the Turbine Hall as well

The Power of Art - Van Gogh (complete episode)

LG1zGY7lE1U

The complete series: http://gekos.no/workshop/video.html
The Dutch Post-Impressionist master.
Van Gogh spent his early life as an art dealer, teacher and preacher in England, Holland and Belgium. His period as an artist began in 1881 when he chose to study art in Brussels, starting with watercolours and moving quickly on to oils. The French countryside was a major influence on his life and his early work was dominated by sombre, earthy colours depicting peasant workers, the most famous of which is The Potato Eaters, 1885.

It was during Van Gogh's studies in Paris (1886-8) that he developed the individual style of brushwork and use of colour that made his name. In 1888 he moved to Arles where the Provençal landscape provided his best-known subject matter. However, it also marked the start of his mental crisis following an argument with his contemporary Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh was committed to a mental asylum in 1889 where he continued to paint, but he committed suicide in 1890.

Sparkle, I also appreciate Kapoor's sculpture, you, and Reader welcome to the thread.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child (2010)

877HmPhFdE4&feature=related

In his short career, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a phenomenon. He became notorious for his graffiti art under the moniker Samo in the late 1970s on the Lower East Side scene, sold his first painting to Deborah Harry for $200, and became best friends with Andy Warhol. Appreciated by both the art cognoscenti and the public, Basquiat was launched into international stardom. However, soon his cult status began to override the art that had made him famous in the first place. Director Tamra Davis pays homage to her friend in this definitive documentary but also delves into Basquiat as an iconoclast. His dense, bebop-influenced neoexpressionist work emerged while minimalist, conceptual art was the fad; as a successful black artist, he was constantly confronted by racism and misconceptions. Much can be gleaned from insider interviews and archival footage, but it is Basquiat's own words and work that powerfully convey the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.

One Art
by Elizabeth Bishop

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

--Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

His dress was shabby; he was a solitary. In 1930 he settled into a second-floor room on Chicago's north side. It was in this room, more than 40 years later, after his death in 1973, that Darger's extraordinary secret life was discovered.
Amid a thick accumulation of debris- including hundreds of Pepto-Bismol bottles, nearly a thousand balls of string, old newspapers, magazines and comic books, religious kitsch and much more- his landlord, the photographer Nathan Lerner, found a creative life's work: an enormous literary and pictorial production. The key element was a picaresque tale in 12 massive volumes composed of some 19,000 pages of legal-sized paper filled with single-spaced typing entitled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. The origins of this epic appear to be in 1909. It took more than eleven years to write it in longhand; in 1912 Darger began the task of typing the still incomplete manuscript...
the most important supplement to the book, however, exists in the several hundred watercolor paintings Darger left in his room, many of them illustrations for The Realms of the Unreal. They transform Darger’s apocalyptic text into a body of images that are among the most original and beautiful in outsider art.

1/4. David Whyte: Jerry Wennstrom's artistic journey

A8C_UEwVmIw&feature=related

David Whyte calls on his poem "Tilicho Lake" in describing artist, author Jerry Wennstrom's creative journey. He defines Wennstrom's encounter with the void as as "the ultimate artistic step." In 1979 Jerry Wennstrom took the ultimate artistic step -- he destroyed his large body of art, gave away his possessions and leapt into a creative void that required deeper faith and "trust in the Great Belonging."

David Whyte originally offered this testimony in the documentary film, "In the Hands of Alchemy: The Art and Life of Jerry Wennstrom" (Parabola and Sentient Publications videos.)

Jerry Wennstrom destroyed his life's work (all his paintings) when he saw that his art had become a "false god" to him. He looked instead find God and creativity in all that he did in everyday life. Following this experience Jerry lived with only what life presented to him.

In Part One, David Whyte's inspiring discourse is both gripping and challenging. Whyte talks about facing death in all its manifestations. He refers often to Wennstrom's art and his path, but Whyte's wisdom and message is for anyone who has faced the metaphoric death of an identity that no longer served their lives.

Thanks to Paul Adams and David Hoffman for use of their music "Zorro and the
Fat Man." See http://www.pauladams.org to listen to this piece and others.

4/4. David Whyte: Jerry Wennstrom - Through darkness to innocence
iHLhxuQygyI

As famed poet David Whyte sees it, Jerry Wennstrom's courageous journey through the eye of darkness led him not to a life of bitterness and sadness, but to a place of inner strength where he claims and expresses the heart of innocence in both his life and his art.

Is there a need for this in today's society? Whyte states, "I think one of the things that we are desperate for now in the Post Modern world is a first-hand experience of creation. And we're tired of talking about the world, and we're tired of observing the world through various media and we want to be actually present to it and affected by it in a very innocent way."

Que importa cuantos años tengo - José Saramago

Frecuentemente me preguntan que cuántos
años tengo... ¡Qué importa eso! Tengo la
edad que quiero y siento. La edad en que
puedo gritar sin miedo lo que pienso.Hacer

Ahora no tienen

No necesito

cuantos espero?. Si con los años que tengo,
aprendí a querer lo necesario y a tomar
solo lo bueno.

I love the innocent sensuality portrayed in his work along with lush color!

Hans Zatzka, also known as P. Ronsard,Zabateri, Pierre de Ronsard, Joseph Bernard and Bernárd Zatzka, was born March 8, 1859 in Vienna, to a builder and his Viennese actress wife, Hilde Sochor.

Zatzka showed an early interest in painting. From 1877 to 1882 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, studying under Christian Griepenkerl, Karl Wurzinger, and Carl of Blaas. In 1880, at the age of 20, he was awarded the Golden Fügermedal; the golden decoration for services to the city Vienna.

After several trips to Italy, Hans worked in the style of his predecessor, Hans Makart, as a free-lance painter in Vienna, painting ceiling frescoes in stairway houses and residential buildings, numerous murals for altars in churches, and portraits. It was during this time that he developed as special interest in academic genre paintings of idyllic women and cupids.

From these representations, Zatzka turned to painting guardian angel images, elves, sensuous female figures, genre scenes, allegories and other popular motifs. He was a greatly influenced by the operas of Richard Wagner and considered ground-breaking in the production of "bedroom pictures" or "towel format", a term used to describe a format that fit the low ceiling and cramped spaces. By the 1920's this style was the size of choice for most European homes.

By the turn of the century, Zatzkas' pictures turned to picture postcard sales in the galleries of Viennese artists, and ultimately sold to other publishers. In 1906, Zatzka gave precise orders for mass production on a trial basis. By 1914, the first of Hans Zatzkas' bedroom images were distributed.

Hans Zatzka did not make his living from postcards but from his religious frescoes in churches, altar paintings, and other large commissions such as hospitals in Vienna during the 1920's. He lived in his home studio, never took in students or teaching jobs and painted until the 80th year of his life.

Albrecht Durer (1471 - 1528) was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg.
His still-famous works include the Apocalypse woodcuts, Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in his Study (1514)
and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation.
His watercolours mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium.
Durer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists,
have secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the Northern Renaissance.
This is reinforced by his theoretical treatise which involve principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions.

His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties,
and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Renaissance in Northern Europe ever since.

Tete Montoliu, Slide Hampton, Bebo Valdés, Randy Brecker, The Manhattan Transfer, Stevie Wonder …

Isabelle Geffroy (born 1 May 1980 in Tours), better known by the nickname Zaz, is a French singer mixing jazzy styles, French variety, soul and acoustic. She is famous for her hit "Je veux", from her first album, Zaz, released on 10 May 2010. Her voice resembles Fréhel and Piaf.

Early life
Her mother was a French teacher, her father worked for an electric company. In 1985, she entered the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Tours with her sister and her brother, and attended courses from the ages of five to eleven. She studied music theory; specifically the violin, piano, guitar, and choral singing. In 1994 she moved to Bordeaux. In 1995, she took singing lessons, and played sports for a year in Bordeaux, all while studying kung fu with a professional coach. In 2000, she won a scholarship from the regional council, which allowed her to join a school of modern music; the CIAM of Bordeaux (Centre for Information and Musical Activities). Her musical influences included 'Four Seasons' by Vivaldi, jazz singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, and other singers such as Enrico Macias, Bobby McFerrin and Richard Bona, as well as African, Latin and Cuban rhythms. In 2006, she moved to Paris.

Singing career
In 2001, she started her singing career in the blues band "Fifty Fingers". She sang in musical groups in Angoulême, especially in a jazz quintet. She became one of the four singers of Izar-Adatz (Basque for "Shooting Star"), a variety band which consisted of sixteen people with whom she toured for two years, especially in the Midi-Pyrenees and the Basque Country. She worked in the studio as a chorister in Toulouse and performed with many singers including Maeso, Art Mengo, Vladimir Max, Jean-Pierre Mader and Serge Guerao.

The Power of Art - Van Gogh (complete episode)

Greco

Another part of Vincent, that is important,is that he was a communist, and tried to form the Communist art collective In Paris, with the other early post impressionist,Gauguin,Cezanne,Lautrec, with his brother Theo as the seller, and all the money of sold work was to be used to provide a sanctuary, where artists could, just create. So no matter who sold works the money would be collectivized a very radical time in Paris.

I was at the barber's today, thumbing through a lifestyle/travel magazine (the only one that wasn't car-, muscle-, or sports-related) and came upon an advertisement for this John William Godward print. Sublime!

The Signal (1918)
http://uploads6.wikiart.org/images/john-william-godward/the-signal-1918.jpg

I'm a big fan of early 20th century illustrators like Maxfield Parrish and JC Leyendecker. Godward was in a similar vein but I didn't know of his work until today. Since there were three guys ahead of me, I had some time to do some quick research on my phone. His Wiki entry is short, sad, and mysterious:

John William Godward (9 August 1861 – 13 December 1922) was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favour with the arrival of painters such as Picasso. He committed suicide at the age of 61 and is said to have written in his suicide note that "the world is not big enough for myself and a Picasso".[1]

His already estranged family, who had disapproved of his becoming an artist, were ashamed of his suicide and burned his papers. No photographs of Godward are known to survive.

Know this backstory does add a touch of melancholy to his paintings. But even before that, I did sense a bit of loneliness and emptiness underlying these lush scenes.

I'll leave you with some of his other work:

Hey, Toska!

May I touch on a couple of things? One, the pics are just too huge. Beautiful, but huge. They should be able to be sized down before posting. Other folks forget that too. Two, it's against the TOS for the site to post nudity, even in art. And when the breasts in question are nearly as big as my real world breasts, you know it's a bit much. :)

I like the paintings though. Very pretty.

Käthe Kollwitz, Memorial Sheet. She rarely depicted real people, but this is for Karl Communist leader Karl Liebknecht during an uprising of 1919. It doesn't glorify his ideology even though she was a supporter.

I think Manet is so much more interesting than Monet. Don't you?

What I especially like about his work is how it was rejected and criticized so often during his time his time but he just kept going. The so-called experts said his perspective was 'off' and his art didn't make sense. Well, duh. They didn't realize that he did it all intentionally! That is not to say Edouard Manet was a nice guy. Probably not. But he was very effective at revealing a deep story about the period and the people he painted. Anyway, you should all read about Manet if you're interested in art at all. You can't really 'get it' unless you know something about the place and time. One of his best paintings (imo) has nudity. It's called The Luncheon on the Grass. :sunglass:

You can find it here (http://www.manet.org/) along with some good biographical info.

I mean, Monet is nice too but how many scenes of flowers or ladies in rowboats do we really need to see? Amiright?

"PAINTED"

The first in a trilogy (check out the sequel, "Brief Candle", at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQXzi...) of screendance films about our tug-of-war with wilderness. Here we explore a building's decay. The choreography and original score are both in decrescendo to illustrate the building's retreat from the physical world, and Nature's advance on it.

Awarded Best Dance Film at the 2012 Fastnet Short Film Festival, and nominated for Best of Festival and Best Original Music.

Elements of Life: Air, Earth, Water, Metal, Fire - Contemporary Dance

Choreography & Performing Artist: Momo Sanno http://www.momosanno.com

“When I was creating the idea for the elements, I was trying to express, to embody the fact that we are not alone. It is not only us as humans on this Earth. We are connected, we are one. We are part of nature, we are not against the natural way of the world. In our body, we find all the main elements, earth, water, fire, metal. There is a sublime connection that takes place between us, our self and the natural world that surrounds us. And when we allow this conversation to take place, we find a deeper understanding, and the selfless aspect of our being loosens its solidity, it can even dissipate for a period of time, and we can sink into a deeper world, one that does not put accent on separation but on Ones”.

Rene Magritte: A collection of 376 paintings (HD)

"Rene Francois Ghislain Magritte was a surrealist artist who created such works of art that intrigue the observers’ minds and force them to question their own perceptions of reality. The most admirable thing about this artist was that he steered clear of elaborate imagery or intricate designs while using simple graphics and day-to-day objects to create paintings that gave newer meaning to already existing notions. He had the reputation of having the ability to make people think through the witty messages he conveyed through his drawings. He had began drawing as a young boy and realized that he wanted to spend the whole of his life drawing, sketching and painting. A tragic incident that happened in his childhood deeply influenced his painting style—his mother committed suicide by drowning and her body was found with her dress covering her face. This imagery stayed with him and is reflected in many of his paintings where the object’s face is not exposed. He initially followed an impressionist style of painting though he later on became more inclined towards surrealism. Before becoming a successful artist he used to design wallpapers and illustrate advertisements—whatever work he did, he was always a true artist at heart. Today, he is widely recognize."

The Art of CLAUDIO BRAVO

SPYTyJDScPA
The Art of CLAUDIO BRAVO (part 2)

Claudio Bravo was born in Valparaiso, Chile, on November 8, 1936 and died on June 4, 2011 in Taroudant, Morocco. He was a hyperrealist, largely self-taught painter, greatly influenced by Renaissance, Baroque artists and Surrealist painters such as Salvador Dalí. He was also influenced by his adopted country, Morocco, where he lived and worked for over thirty years. The Moroccan people as well as the country's textiles, pottery, architecture, plants, and flowers form the subjects of many of Bravo's exquisite paintings and drawings. Suffused with the special light of Morocco, they testify to a grand lineage of artistic inspiration and exploration between Western and Arabic worlds. But along with dazzling technique and refined beauty, Bravo's paintings also manifest a transcendental spirituality and an exceptional fidelity to both the magnificent and the homely.

You Can Download 200 Art Books Free From the Guggenheim

BY SHAUNACY FERRO MAY 3, 2017

Too stingy for expensive art books? The Guggenheim has you covered. Since 2012, the museum has been slowly digitizing its collection of monographs, catalogs, and other art books. Now, it's up to 205 books, all available to download for free from the Internet Archive, as Vice's Creators reports.

The collection includes books by legendary artists like Wassily Kandinsky, analyses of artistic movements like Futurism and German Expressionism, and monographs on everyone from Jenny Holzer to Picasso.

Seriously, if you want to know anything about Kandinsky, the Guggenheim’s digitized collection is the place to go—there are 12 works in the digitized archive that are either by or about the Russian abstract artist. (The museum has one of the largest collections of Kandinsky’s works in the world, via the personal collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim himself.)

The Guggenheim isn’t the only museum making its archives more accessible online. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has hundreds of its own books available online. The Getty’s virtual library launched in 2014 with 250 titles published by the museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Getty Research Institute.

"30 years after she died, and 44 after she stopped playing, Jacqueline du Pré remains a much loved figure in the public imagination, and in a way that is very rare. In the year that would have been her 72th birthday, we pay tribute to Jacqueline du Pré." - Christopher Nupen

Catrin Welz Stein 2° SURREAL ILLUSTRATOR
The Music and the Magic

As a child I loved to draw and liked to be creative.
I almost was born with a pencil in my hand.
I knew I wanted to do something related to arts.
I have graduated from Graphic Design in
Darmstadt, Germany and then worked for
different advertising agencies in Germany, USA
and Switzerland. I stopped working in agencies
after becoming a mother, and after a short time
of being self employed I decided to quit work until
my children grew older. Because of my children
(4 and 6 years old) I can go through childhood
again and I can enjoy the world of fantasy and
fairy tails. I like to look at childrens books and let
them inspire me. „Where the wild things are“, from
Maurice Sendak is a favourite book of all of us.
Through the children books I rediscovered the love
to illustration again.

As a professional graphic art designer I
often had to make compromises for the clients.
There were a lot of rules in visual communication
and I often felt that I could not express my whole
creativity. Now I enjoy creating art that does not
explain itself from the beginning. My images have
a dreamlike and surreal quality. They speak from
inner feelings which we often hide in our daily life.

In 2009 Catrin started to create digital images by
collaging old illustrations and photographs. At the
same time she discovered online social networks
and her private images were then open to the public. T
he positive responses Catrin got there were her motivation
to go on with her art until now.

Vilhelm Hammershoi: A collection of 120 paintings (HD)

"Danish painter, Vilhelm Hammershoi is best known for
his genre-painting consisting of quiet interiors, in muted
colours/tones of blue and grey, containing isolated figures
that have their back turned to the viewer. His rooms
are sparsely furnished, suggesting a quiet melancholy
or introspection. Although Hammershoi is considered
to be an exponent of Symbolism, there is equal argument
for suggesting that he was simply interested in portraying
beauty in the ordinary, rather than making any complex
statements. His art has a mystical, timeless quality about
it, but it also enables the viewer to take a nostalgic journey
into the past.

Influenced by the composition and tonal variations of
Dutch Realist genre painting from the likes of
Jan Vermeer, and also by the American Post-Impressionist
James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Hammershoi's most familiar
subject is his wife, painted in their tidy apartment. He also
produced a number of landscapes, but these are considered
of less importance. His reputation is undergoing something
of a revival, and he is now considered to be one of the best
genre painters from Scandinavia."

*The music is sensual, quiet, and as subtle as Hammershoi's
paintings...unfortunately I have no credit for the music. If anyone
here is familiar with this music or its composer, do post.

Diego Velazquez: A collection of 133 paintings (HD)

His complex artworks with realistic subjects, infusing life onto the canvas, made him
one of the most admired painters in Europe during the 17th century, or rather the
Spanish Golden Age. Not only did he possess a god-gifted talent to capture life into
paintings, but he was also capable of giving them a true feel. Diego Velazquez
was, undoubtedly, the most significant Spanish painter who popularized Western art in
his own naturalistic style, playing with brushstrokes and color palettes. His stunning paintings
were typically a blend of both bright and dull color schemes, especially blacks, greys, reds
and blue-greens. The royal Venetian paintings, belonging to the 16th century, played a
major role in drawing him towards visual impressions, evident from the numerous masterpieces
he created during his entire life. What added to his popularity of using unique techniques
and different styles in painting portraits was his employment as a leading artist in the royal court
of King Philip IV, who refused to get his portrait painted by no one else except Velazquez. His
paintings mostly depicted religious themes and cultural subjects, though he composed innumerable
portraits that talked of the members of the Spanish royal family, significant European figures, as
well as the common man.

Edward Hopper: A collection of 236 paintings (HD)

"No one captured the isolation of the individual within the modern city
like Edward Hopper. His imagery of figures within urban settings go well
beyond their role as modern cityscapes, exposing the underbelly of the
human experience. So while his oeuvre officially falls within the rubric of
Realism, it offers a far more evocative look at life between the World Wars.
Indeed, by providing a minimum of action, stripping away almost any sign
of life or mobility, and adding dramatic means of representation with striking
lighting schemes in claustrophobic spaces, Hopper suggests something of the
psychological inner life of his subjects, leading the way towards Abstract
Expressionism. He injected significance, and the weight of the individual's
existential being in the modern metropolis or in country life, into what
otherwise might appear to be straight-forward images of everyday life."

A Soul Haunted By Painting 1/9

"A Soul Haunted By Painting" is based on the true
story of Chinese painter, Pan Yuliang, whose work
was celebrated in Paris yet rejected at home..."

"Pan Yuliang is played by Gong Li, China's best
known movie star. Directed by Huang Shuqin, a
woman famous for highlighting the influence of
tradition on gender issues, among the movie's
themes is the debate over the use of live, nude
models for painting, and issue first raised in the
1920s and still unsettled in China today."
