A board foot is a specialized unit of measure for the volume of lumber in the United States and Canada. It is the volume of a one-foot length of a board one foot wide and one inch thick. <--- I did not realize that it was only used in the US and Canada.

I learned this term over twenty years ago while at University of New Mexico.
I, along with other students, had to visit lumber yards to purchase materials for the purpose of building sets for the theater.
