"Revenge is a dish best served cold."

Revenge works well when the target least expects it.

I would say this is very true!

Starve a cold, feed a fever...

The best way to treat a cold is to skip a meal or two; the best way to treat fever is to have a light meal.

I don't know if this has even been proven true or not and while I'm at it, if they can do robotic surgery from miles away with flying success why can't they cure the common cold!? :|

Very TRUE and an INTERESTING observation! But I think the idiom mainly speaks to being so enamored of someone you want to imitate them. I could be wrong, I dunno!

There is many at a true word that is spoken in jest...

A remark, such as something about a person's character, that is said jokingly, is often true to some extent.

'Time is a great healer".......

Time allows people to forgive and forget past hurts, injuries and loss as memories fade, and people become wiser and more mature.

What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander...

What is good for one person ought to be good enough for anyone else.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going............

Often, when things become difficult, people who seem weak find the strength somehow to keep going! You become tough in hard times.

Winning isn't everything...

Success is not everything, what you learn in the process of becoming successful is more important.

i'm sure someone has mentioned this one..but it resonates in my life-

"If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen!"

We Bought The Farm......

Farmers worked mortgaged land their entire lives, but could only "buy" it when they died and their insurance paid out. It wasn't neccesarily a demeaning term either. For a poor family farmer working hard to make ends meet, having the mortgage paid off often meant comparative wealth and good-times for their surviving family members. Saying someone bought the farm was a somewhat respectful way of acknowledging that their death had permitted their widow and childen to become landowners (from, Snopes).

Unless you've got serious allergies, then this most likely won't work out (I have allergies to lots of things that seem to work for geese, but not me *lol* )

I can't think of the song, but there's a song with this exact line of thought! Do you by chance know which song I'm thinking of, homoe?

So true. Thanks for all the many ways you've added toward the body of idioms, colloquial sayings and phrase of thoughts! Some I remember, some I frequently use, and other times I've just never heard of things people say to express what's on their mind. :rrose:

Without a doubt my all time favorite idiom.......

"Tighter Than Bark On A Tree"..........

A person who hangs on to their money! Someone beyond frugal! A cheapskate!

Sidebar: My train of thought is..if you have to ask how much something costs, you probably can't afford it.....stay home!

homoe 07-10-2017 10:33 PM

The origin was Polish I've been told. Basically means not my problem, does not concern me.

homoe 07-10-2017 11:56 PM

"Go Big or Go Home"...........

An expression to encourage the listener to be extravagant, to go all the way, and do whatever you are doing to its fullest - and not flake out.

homoe 07-11-2017 12:01 AM

“Dot the i's and cross the t's.”............

The idiom has since come to mean paying attention to every little detail. In earlier days it was meant to check over any documents carefully before signing them!

homoe 07-11-2017 12:02 AM

In Norse mythology, the dog is associated with wind and the cat with storms. This expression means it's raining very heavily.

homoe 07-11-2017 12:05 AM

Sounds like a broken record....

Repeating the same things over and over.

homoe 07-11-2017 07:17 AM

What a small world...

What a coincidence.

homoe 07-11-2017 07:19 AM

This expression means to take your time or not go so fast.

homoe 07-11-2017 07:40 AM

"Sour Grapes....................

To disparage something that you cannot obtain and have yourself.

Expression alludes to the Greek writer Aesop's famous fable about a fox that cannot reach some grapes on a high vine and announces that they are sour.

"Getingt Up On The Wrong Side Of The Bed".;.........

homoe 07-11-2017 08:05 AM

IMHO most people not only overuse this word, but apply it to events/items that are FAR from awesome!

homoe 07-11-2017 08:07 AM

JAW DROPPING...........

This is a tricky English expression, because the way its used determines whether it means something positive or negative. A positive jaw dropping experience is one that leaves someone breathless in extreme happiness.

homoe 07-11-2017 08:10 AM

"Jump on the bandwagon.”...

Long ago, bands on the platforms of traveling wagons played music to announce a parade or political speech. To show their support, people would often jump onto the platform and join the band.

Today, this idiom usually refers to someone who hopes to benefit from supporting another person's agenda.
