Happy Birthday, Albrecht Durer, born on this day in 1421...

Albrecht Durer (1471 - 1528) was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg.
His still-famous works include the Apocalypse woodcuts, Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in his Study (1514)
and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation.
His watercolours mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium.
Durer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists,
have secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the Northern Renaissance.
This is reinforced by his theoretical treatise which involve principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions.

His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties,
and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Renaissance in Northern Europe ever since.

Andrea Motis & Joan Chamorro Quintet

Tete Montoliu, Slide Hampton, Bebo Valdés, Randy Brecker, The Manhattan Transfer, Stevie Wonder …

Zaz in Concert - Baloise Session 2013

Country: France
Genre: Street jazz

Isabelle Geffroy (born 1 May 1980 in Tours), better known by the nickname Zaz, is a French singer mixing jazzy styles, French variety, soul and acoustic. She is famous for her hit "Je veux", from her first album, Zaz, released on 10 May 2010. Her voice resembles Fréhel and Piaf.

Early life
Her mother was a French teacher, her father worked for an electric company. In 1985, she entered the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Tours with her sister and her brother, and attended courses from the ages of five to eleven. She studied music theory; specifically the violin, piano, guitar, and choral singing. In 1994 she moved to Bordeaux. In 1995, she took singing lessons, and played sports for a year in Bordeaux, all while studying kung fu with a professional coach. In 2000, she won a scholarship from the regional council, which allowed her to join a school of modern music; the CIAM of Bordeaux (Centre for Information and Musical Activities). Her musical influences included 'Four Seasons' by Vivaldi, jazz singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, and other singers such as Enrico Macias, Bobby McFerrin and Richard Bona, as well as African, Latin and Cuban rhythms. In 2006, she moved to Paris.

Singing career
In 2001, she started her singing career in the blues band "Fifty Fingers". She sang in musical groups in Angoulême, especially in a jazz quintet. She became one of the four singers of Izar-Adatz (Basque for "Shooting Star"), a variety band which consisted of sixteen people with whom she toured for two years, especially in the Midi-Pyrenees and the Basque Country. She worked in the studio as a chorister in Toulouse and performed with many singers including Maeso, Art Mengo, Vladimir Max, Jean-Pierre Mader and Serge Guerao.

Love of Artists - Painter Van Gogh

The Power of Art - Van Gogh (complete episode)

The Dutch Post-Impressionist master.
Van Gogh spent his early life as an art dealer, teacher and preacher in England, Holland and Belgium. His period as an artist began in 1881 when he chose to study art in Brussels, starting with watercolours and moving quickly on to oils. The French countryside was a major influence on his life and his early work was dominated by sombre, earthy colours depicting peasant workers, the most famous of which is The Potato Eaters, 1885.

It was during Van Gogh's studies in Paris (1886-8) that he developed the individual style of brushwork and use of colour that made his name. In 1888 he moved to Arles where the Provençal landscape provided his best-known subject matter. However, it also marked the start of his mental crisis following an argument with his contemporary Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh was committed to a mental asylum in 1889 where he continued to paint, but he committed suicide in 1890.

When I spent the night at my Granny's house, on my side of the bed , she had framed pictures of ballerinas. I would lay there and dream of wearing frilly skirts, being graceful, and pretty pink satin shoes. This artist takes me right back there.

When I was a teen I would come into NYC each weekend to take art lessons at the Museum of Modern Art (not talented but interested) and after class, my friend and I would go into the museum. I remember a Marc Chagal exhibit with paintings and stained glass. It was awe inspiring.
