He is genuinely the one of the nicest people I've ever had the chance to meet. |
Gosh, I've met a few celebrities, but was never mindful enough to get an autograph...
Under sixteen: I met Dr. Sanguinary of Creature Feature fame. My parents drove me to a local fish shop where he was hosting some kind of marathon so that I could meet him. Dang was he nice. Rowdy Roddy Piper and Mad Dog Vshaun (sic) and another wrestler whose name slips my mind. My family were friends with a guy that knew them so we were able to meet them when they visited my dads friends. I think my brother got to "wrestle" with one of them. Over sixteen: I lived in England for several years (five) and met Eliot Gould who was performing at our Air Force base. I met Barbara Streisand that same year who was working on Yentl, it was brief but I was starstruck. I met Adam Ant at Picadilly circus where he was doing an interview, all I can remember about that was telling him I loved how he did his hair which made him laugh. I met worzel Gummidge, who was played by Jon Pertwee of Dr. Who fame, and like others, I prefer Tom Baker myself. I also met Nick Mason of Pink Floyd while they were working up the movie The Wall, not really met, but we were in the same shop in London at the time and he was allowed to the front of the line right when it was my turn, and he asked if it was alright. I couldn't even talk, I just nodded, I wonder still if he noticed I had a Juice Newton album and a Rush 2112 album in my hand. I met Margaret Thatcher in London and there were hundreds of people there at #1 Downing Street hoping to see her and when she came past, she shook our hands. Such a strong woman for all of the things that had to be done. And that's all that I know of. Now I have seen Warren Buffet a few times, we live in the same city, but never really "met" him. His aunt was quite famous here in Omaha and I've met her many times. I've also met Chip Davis and his group Mannheim Steamroller, they live and record here in Omaha. |
I met Hulk Hogan in the hotel at Little Rock this past weekend.

Celebrities...
They all have stories, but I'm too tired to write them out. Maybe another day. :-) |

Another famous person I've met and sang with is pop star Bonnie McKee. If you don't know her name, you have likely heard her music. She co-wrote a lot of Katy Perry's popular songs (Firework, California Gurls, etc.) and had a single out this summer (American Girl). I knew her before she was famous, but not very well. We sang in the same choir together when we were younger and I first met her at one of our choir's anniversary concerts. Good times. :) |
Mayor Tom Bradley, Los Angeles. (Now deceased)
Senator Ted Kennedy Bill Clinton Former San Antonio Mayor and member of Clinton cabinet, Henry Cisneros. Jerry Brown, Gov. of California Henry Waxman, Dem Congressman Geraldine Ferraro Donna Brazile Lilly Tomlin Loren Green (Bonanza Western TV Star, when I was a child) Chaka Khan, (my gf at the time opened for her at a fundraiser) James Brown (After a concert) Joan Nestle (One of my fondest memories. I got to be her escort on a trip to Disneyland when she came to Southern Cal to do a book tour.) Lillian Faderman (I was interviewed by her for a book she was writing on Butch-Femme) Edward James Olmos (Actor) Easi Morales (Actor) Lou Diamond Phillips (Actor) Growing up in Los Angeles and being active in LGBTQ issues and local politics gave me the opportunity to meet a few "celebs." |
Joan Jett - met her in her dressing room at a concert. I was on my knees. Nuff said.

I have met quite a few famous people so here is a list of highlights:
I had a friend, Rex, who used to work for a record label. We got backstage passes because of this, so from that I met: Todd Rungren Peter Gabriel Phil Collins Heather McAllister- I met her through a girl we both dated and we hit it off and became friends. Heather later because a famous fat activist and burlesque performer and was photographed by Leonard Nimoy. Laurie Anderson, Performance artist- My friend Heather was very active in the queer community in Ann Arbor she came to a party I was at after her show. Karen Finley, Performance artist- through my friend Heather in Ann Arbor Leontyne Price - I was in a youth symphony and we rehearsed and played with her. Itzhak Perlman- I was in a youth symphony and we rehearsed and played with him Trent Rezner of 9 Inch Nails- My friend Tony opened for him before "Pretty Hate Machine" took off. He came to my house and threw up on my white floor pillow, ew. Al Jourgenson of Ministry, Revolting Cocks etc. - we were at a party together and did tequila body shots off the same girl. heh that was a fun night Dennis White of Charm Farm and now is DJ Static Revenger but he was just Dennis White when I knew him. He was close friends with my brother and so I saw him hanging about before and after they went carousing. The ever popular stalking around backstage has yielded some interesting famous people meeting. . . Nina Simone Etta James Ray Charles Anise Parker, mayor of Houston- I met her for a moment at a political function The Indigo Girls- , got thrown off their tour bus because my ex (the crazy Russian) offended one or the other of them. I insulted Andy Bell of Erasure because he was a dick at a party I went to and I didn't know, or care, who he was. I do like their music though. Buck Angel- had dinner with he and his wife Elayne. They were friends of a guy I used to date and were in town. I hadn't seen or even heard of any of his porn before we had dinner so I had no idea he was famous. |
Oh, that reminds me, I had met Etta James as well. She was performing at a military something or other and I was helping doing a set-up for the dining hall at the NCO club at Mildenhall RAF in England. I was stacking champagne glasses when her entourage came in and started to take seats. I went to take up coats and she had a fur thing and took my hand and told me how it was to be stored, not hung. I noticed her eyes were yellowish like many older women and men of colour. When I hung them all up and put her fur away I went back to move the champagne glasses and she called me over and said she would dedicate a song to me (as a tip I think). I stayed for a few songs and ended up buying one of her bawdier albums later that year.

This was in the days when the Dodge poetry festival was still held in Waterloo, I was sitting in the tent and Mark Doty snuck up to me and quietly asked if he could sit with me and then asked if I would also save a seat for Stanley Kunitz......sometimes life is just extraordinarily grand! |

The most recent celeb we have met was NY Yankee Mariano Rivera. We were at Bath & Body at the mall , he was in the back of the store checking out the scents when we spotted him. When we were finished checking out turned around and there he was right in front of my face. He noticed my chain and Yankee pendant and said it was really nice and thanked us for being fans. Caught me off guard. lol
Since we live near Clearwater we always see Hulk Hogan around town. He is always great. Met Eddie Money after a show, he wasn't very nice, actually a complete ass I went to high school with Ray Liotta. Popular guy and excelled in sports and drama. Who would have known? |
Also I hung out with Hunter Reno waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day before either of us had hit puberty. (Mutual family friend's backyard party) Same party, hung out with Janet Reno too --- but she was just a lowly lawyer back then and deeply unimpressive to a kid.
|
I used to get to go to school with Jeremy Jackson from Bay Watch . He wasn't in the show yet , but had parts on soaps. I remember him being a brat and kicking me in the leg. He begged me not to tell on him so his mom wouldn't take away his surf lessons . I guess he needed those surf lessons for work.
It must be hard being the bread winner when you are just a little kid yourself. I think he was as normal as he could be . |
I met John Travolta when he was Vinnie Barbarino,
I met the guys from the Bay City Rollers (embarrassing, yes) and I met the guys from Chicago (the band). John Travolta was very nice and talked to us for awhile. We were all of about 14 or 15 and star struck. |
My own private Idaho...
In 1982, I met Kate Pierson of the B-52s, after first pinching her ass. Here's the back story:
I was at a tiny hole-in-the-wall club, maybe 50 people in the audience, which made the place feel pretty packed. The woman in front of me was wearing this white backless form fitting dress with these small white pom poms all over the dress, each spaced out a few inches from the next pom pom. The guy next to me was pretty excited by the woman in front of me, but wouldn't talk to her. Instead, he kept pointing at her, and yelling at me, "That's tape! That's TAPE!!" Or so I thought. What he was really yelling, of course, was "That's KATE!" At the time, though, I thought he was trying to tell me this woman's dress was made of tape, so what did I do? I bent down for a closer inspection. It didn't look like tape, and I yelled that back... but he was even more frantic at this point, exaggeratedly pointing at her, and continued to mouth (I thought) "THAT'S TAPE!!" So I bent back down, my head about 4 inches from her ass (because the club was so dark, you know), and just to be sure, I reached out and carefully pinched one of the pom poms on Kate Pierson's ass. When I stood back up, I informed him, "NO! I think it's COTTON!!" but to no avail. The poor guy was bent over double laughing at what I'd just done. After the show, I met Kate, and of course realized then what the guy had been trying to tell me. I didn't mention the communication misfire to her, and if she was ever aware I had pinched her ass, she didn't mention that either. |
Years ago, back in the late 1990s, I leased my own hair station in a gay friendly sector of my metro area. I shared a station with another practitioner; she worked four days, I worked the other three. It was on one of the days, where we both switched out on the same day (Wednesday) and she was running behind schedule and asked me if I would take on a last minute client of hers, who just happened to be in town. That client turned out to be Cindy Williams of Laverne & Shirley tv fame. She was a very interesting, down to earth person. She shared with all of us, in our close quarters salon that the one reason she loved coming to get her hair done at our salon was because it wasn't a well discovered place for other people of celebrity status to be found. I listened quietly while she conversed with our salon owner, whom she happened to know personally (they grew up together).
Those were the days, back then. I really enjoyed my time at that salon while sharing a station with another hair dresser. Every practitioner in our salon represented a sector across the LGBTQ spectrum. Fond memories I have of those years, spanning the 1990s. |
I met Roberto Fonseca (pianist) after a concert. He took a photo with the group I was with and was gracious and kind to us.
I used to run into Ruth Gordon when I lived in NYC in the late 1970s. I saw her at least 3 times walking down the street. I saw Red Buttons coming out of a restaurant as I was going in. I saw Mickey Rooney going up the escalator as I was going down one. I was a client coordinator (i.e., book appts) at a video post production facility in the mid 1980s and used to book chyron editing sessions for Michael Jackson and Tony Bennett. I never saw them because they only came to the studio in the middle of the night. |
I never met him exactly but.....

Mary worked with Wanz the guy and singer wearing the orange suit on Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" video. When I'd go down to meet Mary after work often times he'd leave before her and he'd walk out first and past me... |
Helped her fine Joseph Wambaugh video The Glitter Dome..
when I worked at Video Visions in Milwaukee (this was after she was released from prison).
Lawrencia Ann "Bambi" Bembenek, known as Laurie Bembenek, a former police officer convicted of murdering her husband's ex-wife. Her story garnered national attention after she escaped from Taycheedah Correctional Institution and was recaptured in Canada, an episode which inspired books, movies and the slogan "Run, Bambi, Run". A re-investigation of the case followed, and in December 1992 a judge reduced Ms. Bembenek’s life sentence to 20 years after she struck a deal with prosecutors in which she pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. She was immediately released for time served. On November 20, 2010, Bembenek died at a hospice facility in Portland, Oregon at the age of 52 |
I met country singer Doug Supernaw back in the early 90s at Iah aka Bush Airport. We were waiting in line to get through security and I asked for an autograph, received it and talked with him till his turn through security. Good guy just had bad habits and some issues.
Currently hes fighting cancer but in remission. Still plays venues every now and then. |
I was passing through Chicago (I assume it was O'Hare) when Oprah and her entourage passed by. I remember she was wearing a big fur coat. I had just been in a shop that had a mag with her photo on the front page. I was looking at the mag in the shop and then looking at her and I was like what the heck. At the time she was such a new celebrity I wasn't even sure how her name was pronounced. I am not an autograph hound but it would be hard to run down a celebrity and ask for an autograph when you can't even say their name.

My wife and I are huge fans of the musical group 'Cowboy Junkies', a band from Canada. We attended a concert in Chicago wherein post concert the lead singer was out and about in the lobby just making conversation with us. My wife was verklempt, the lead singer hugged my wife, my wife hugged her. Margot Timmons asked us to be her guest at the next evening's show. How awesome is that?

I met Weird Al Yankovic once after one of his concerts. He was surprisingly soft spoken. A very nice guy. This was the days before cell phones, so no evidence exists

I Met a Celebrity
My ex and I use to go to Nashville for the yearly Fan Fair. We met so many stars and got pics and autographs and many live shows it was great. We had the luck to meet and greet: Loretta Lynn , Conway Twitty (we went to his fan party and it was great at his place), George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, Reba Macintyre, Charley Pride, Minnie Pearl, so many many more. We went for 6 years and always met different ones each time.
We then went to Dollywood and had a great time although Dolly was not there and another year we went to Memphis and went into Elvis's house and walked around and bought some things I still have. Her brother lived in Texas so we went there for Xmas and it was really nice. Went on the River Walk and visited the Alamo. We then left and went to Nashville for New Years. Fabulous. |
I met Kathy Najimy backstage at a March on Washington. (I don't remember which one or the year, but it was one where the Names Project quilts were spread out over the Mall). The chorus I was in (The Atlanta Feminist Women's Chorus) performed. She was very nice and cutie-cute-cute as always. I was a dumba**, as usual when I meet famous people. I think all I said was, "I just love your show!" (It was not too long after The Kathy and Moe Show came out on video. Way before Disney and all that.)
