"At Lula a 20% service charge is added to pay employees a fair living wage and benefits. A service charge model helps us provide a consistent income for all members of our team in a way that the old tip system did not".

Sidebar: I tip and I might add I tip well. HOWEVER, I'm opposed to forced tipping or as they are calling it "service charge" being added to my bill! I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds this offensive. And IF they are so worried about their employees making a fair living wage, cut back on your profits a bits and add that to their paychecks!

Book reading and signing this Sunday.......

50 E Ida B Wells Dr Chicago

David Sedaris, author of the previous bestsellers Calypso, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and regular National Public Radio contributor, will be appearing for one night only at the historic Auditorium Theatre following the release of his newest books The Best of Me and A Carnival of Snackery.

As always, Sedaris will be offering a selection of all-new readings and recollections, as well as a Q&A session and book signing. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Mr. Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

Something to look forward too........

An exhibition dedicated to Frida Kahlo will replace “Immersive Van Gogh” next year.

In February 2022, after a yearlong run at the Germania Club Building in Old Town, the wildly popular experiential art exhibit “Immersive Van Gogh” is set to be replaced by a new visual spectacle from production company Lighthouse Immersive—this time dedicated to the work of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

Kahlo, whose work famously melds elements of folk art and magical realism, is perhaps best known for her self-portraiture and portrait work (like “Diego and I,” which recently sold for nearly $35 million at a Sotheby’s auction). Much like its predecessor, “Frida: Immersive Dream” will showcase animated video projections of some of the artist’s most iconic paintings, including works like “The Two Fridas” and “The Wounded Deer,” alongside a selection of drawings, iconography and photographs of the artist at various stages of her life.

Looking for something a bit different on the art's scene?

“Making Friends With Hungry Ghosts” will open Friday, December 10 at Home Away From Home (1141 N Damen Ave); hours are Fridays 6–10pm, Saturdays noon–10pm and Sundays noon–6pm, as well as by appointment.

Chicago street artist Dont Fret hopes people feel at home when they visit his Wicker Park gallery space—at least in part because the gallery is located inside Fret’s actual home, an apartment on Damen Avenue filled with vintage furniture and family mementos in addition to the art on the walls.

Inspired by his upbringing amid Wicker Park’s DIY scene as well as time spent living in an artist commune in London, Fret aims to fuse elements of art, food and culture at the half-gallery, half-apartment space, which he’s named Home Away From Home. When it opens to the public on December 10, the gallery will debut “Making Friends With Hungry Ghosts,” a solo exhibition of Fret’s work from the past several months, plus a selection of vintage furniture curated by Brent Rawlinson and Daniella Caruso.

Buddy Guy's Legends 700 S Wabash Ave Thursday January 6 2022 - Sunday January 30 2022

Most people call January "the first month of the year" or "four weeks of taking my resolutions seriously," but Chicago blues fans know that it's actually "Buddy Guy month." Throughout the month, the legendary bluesman picks up his polka-dot guitar and takes the stage during a residency at the South Loop blues clubs that bears his name.

Guy performs every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, with a different supporting act joining him each evening. This year, you'll see Guy paired with folks like local singer Demetria Taylor, California guitarist Leilani Kilgore amd veteran singer-songwriter John Primer. Tickets to Guy's January residency aren't exactly cheap, but witnessing a bonafide blues icon perform in his hometown is the kind of experience that's worth the dough.

A Site of Struggle: American Art against Anti-Black Violence. The Block Museum of Art is free and open to all. Located at 40 Arts Circle, Evanston, IL . Hours: Wednesday to Friday 12 p.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday.

Northwestern University’s Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art presents A Site of Struggle: American Art against Anti-Black Violence, an expansive collection of 65 works from around the nation. This moving new exhibit asks how art has been used to protest, process, mourn and memorialize anti-Black violence for over a century.

Interesting race, violence, and art by investigating the varied strategies American artists have used to grapple with anti-Black violence, the artwork ranges from literal to metaphorical. And while it may be showcasing works created between the 1890s and 2013 — it speaks to contemporary artistic practice within a longer history of American art and visual culture. Featured artists include Darryl Cowherd, Elizabeth Catlett, Emory Douglas, Melvin Edwards, Dox Thrash, and many more.

The Gage for a Friday Fish Fry sometime....

The people of the Loop have been waiting. They’ve been waiting for an alternative to Bennigan’s or for a liquor list that goes beyond Old Crow and Miller draft. Now, thanks to Billy Lawless, the wait is over. The Ireland native and his father (same name, but call him William) ventured far from their neighborhood pubs the Irish Oak and the Grafton to open a big-deal spot on a big-deal strip of Chicago. And they did it right.

Drinks and food sport downtown prices, so plan on spending some loot and don’t look back. Like sweet ’tinis? The signature Gage Cocktail— pear Grey Goose, Aperol, clove-infused apple juice with a splash of cranberry and lime— is your drink. Are you a brown liquor sipper? The whiskey list is lengthy and expertly selected. The beer list goes beyond the basics and wines are accompanied by clever, straightforward descriptions.

John Waters (legendary filmmaker of the cult classic Pink Flamingos and blockbuster Hairspray, and author of Carsick and Mr. Know-It-All) has turned his brilliant mind to fiction: specifically his first novel and what he calls the “feel bad romance.” In Liarmouth, Waters employs his trademark combination of hilarity and obscenity, weaving a tangled tale of sex, crime, and family dysfunction, with main character Marsha Sprinkle (scammer, suitcase thief, master of disguise) at the helm. At CHF, Waters share his secrets for writing well in a transgressive way.
