Full brunt of storm has arrived. Windows and doors are caked with snow and ice. Door is frozen shut. Have no clue what is going on out there which is probably a good thing. Winds have reached hurricane force. Thankfully they are coming more from the north than the northeast. Northeast hits me dead on. Windchills in the single digits. More than half the Cape is without power. Half this town is without power. Amazed it has held this long. Poor cat came out of the closet long enough to eat a few mouthfuls. Then something landed on the roof and she was gone again. Think she actually pulled the door shut after her. Trying not to think about how long it is going to take to get the fur off the clothes she is hiding behind. Just another chapter in the joys of coastal living. Think I will go meditate on summer at the beach. |
I want to second IslandScout's post! I appreciate everyone checking in but am really in awe (and relieved) to see folks handling the storm in stride.
Keep checking in, please! |
Here's your thundersnow!
Stay safe tonight folks! |

4am check in from Maine ... Just did a quick peek outside, its windy, really windy, the snow accumulation not so much yet for me. But every window is caked from the wind. Its like a wind vortex in my yard. There is not a lick of snow on my car, but the snow drift is about 3.5 feet up to my deck railing. I had to sweep out my mudroom from the snow that is sneaking in the cracks around the door windows and jams. Its friggen nasty out there.
be safe new englanders and as always the offer stands, if anyone near me needs anything when the sun rises hit me up. Ive got 4wd and I will get you what you need. |
We haven't lost power, and it's possible we won't because of our proximity to a hospital, Pete believes.
We did lose power for fewer than 24 hours during the storm where Pete's mother and Sparkle lost power for several days. I think Snow Blow Guy was here in the middle of the night and I was able to open the door to the porch, but there are a few inches of snow in the screened in porch. If we lose power, we'll cook on the grill, though I don't know how much propane is left. It will be cold, but Bella and I will just huddle under the covers. Pete insists we will still have running water. Pete has to work today, and it will take her a while to free Big Girl, her 150. I don't know who will plow the parking lot at work. I don't care how bored she is, as long as she gets back and forth safely. |
Amherst Ma
I'm still holed up in my client's lobby and not likely to get home anytime today...there's over a foot of snow accumulated against the floor to ceiling window next to me. The plows are very consistent in their endeavors... I have fallen slack, however and stopped clearing off my car every so often...I figure the snow will still be there regardless...sleep seemed more important. And staying dry is paramount when you don't have a dry change of clothes...
I hate to be one of THEM....but....this is New England at it's rawest...I'm rather relishing the return to the old days when winter was truly WINTER...I do feel for all the animals out in the elements...but this is what nature is all about. Good to know global warming hasn't done so much damage that we won't have a real winter any more. A very heartfelt thanks to all those who are helping make this storm manageable. I've heard the fire trucks going out every so often during the night. There are so many people who don't get to take the day off and just hibernate ;) Thank you to them :bunchflowers: |
West Warren, Ma checking in
Just got back in from taking 2 of our fur babies out its so deep almost lost them. Jacque the poodle was hopping around like a rabbit and cricket she just plowed thru. When I opened the front door there was almost a ft of snow tween it and the glass door. The steps had snow up past my ankles I had cleaned the stairs off several times last nite. One of our cars is barely visible however the Durango is standing proud. Almost like the snow was afraid to drift near it. There us like a snow free zone around it. The plow drivers r working hard here and u can't c the roads. I have to say they r good at their jobs when it comes to keeping the roads clean. The winds are still blowing but not as bad but the snow us still coming down at a good rate. Im thankful its powder |
Good Morning, fellow Planeteers! We are alive. We got hit with snow pretty hard. There is over a foot outside, maybe a little more. It is still coming down lightly. We are out at our house at the foothills of the Catskills, which I hoped would be the lesser of the 2 evils than my house I rent near the Adirondacks. I hope I chose wisely. Here we have a big wood burning stove and generator.
|
listening to the news and they just reported that Worcester, Ma got over 27.5 inches and its still snowing.
The driving ban is still in effect and they arent saying when it will be lifted here. We havent lostpower tg for that since out on the cape and the coast they are saying over 500,000 are without power. The electriccompanies says as soon as the wind dies down a bit they will be able to work on getting power back on . Just heard parts of Ct got over 3 foot. They didnt have a driving ban and they are talking about how many cars and all have gotten stuck |
Bangor, ME check in...
Winds have picked up and the drifts are a good 3ft. Hard to say what has actually accumulated as far as a clear reading. I haven't heard plows running at all through the night but that doesn't mean they aren't... Some areas of town are starting to lose power. I don't forsee this happening at the cave dwelling. Almost time to head out to work... I got french toast to make those kids for breakfast. :badcook: |
MA has a driving ban until at least 4pm. Guess I will be leaving tomorrow. We got a bunch here at the Jersey shore as well.
|
Checking in from Southern RI (yes we may be only 30 miles wide but we have southern and northern parts, darnit.)
I think I got the least of the storm here. I know I have over a foot of snow. Friends and family in CT and MA are reporting over 3 feet of snow. Widespread power outages too. I imagine we won't hear from some people for a while.
Rhode Island has this weird snow belt where half the state gets something completely different than the other half of the state. Friends a mere 25 miles away from me have twice the snow that I do. I lucked out this time. (Don't worry, I won't press my luck in future disasters.) Right now I can't open my back door to look outside because the snow drifts have blown a mound in front of the door. I do see many tree limbs down from the wind and the weight of the wet snow. And I can see tree branches falling into my pool. That should be interesting to clean up. People criticized the governors of CT, MA and RI for their driving bans on the major highways, especially when these bans included big fines and possible jail time for people out on the roads without legitimate reasons. But the message was really to get businesses to let people work at home or go home early before the brunt of the storm hit. It's sad that they had to go to such extremes to express what should be common sense- stay at home and wait the storm out. Some states declared states of emergency, some didn't. The difference is that for a lot of people, their jobs won't let them go early or not come in unless an emergency is declared. Meanwhile in part of NY, especially in Long Island, the news is reporting that plows can't get through because people had to abandon their cars on the highway. Maine had a 19 car pileup on I-295. The other wild thing was the thundersnow... lots of big, bright green blasts of lightening. The concern tonight is more hurricane force winds, possibly taking down more trees, and thus power lines with them. In the past two years we've had so many bad storms take down trees and tree limbs. I'd still take a blizzard over a tornado anyway. |

if u come please be extremely careful and slow |
Morning everyone. Just stopping by to see how everyone who is able to check in, is doing!
Hoping the day will be a good one...stay warm, safe, and let us know how you are faring....gentle hugs and warm thoughts for all of you.... |
Cape Cod check in
Was a wild night! The snow is still falling and not expected to clear out of here until after midnight. Doesnt look like there is much snow out there. Maybe 8-12 inches so far. I am presuming the backhoe they are using to keep the parking lot clear is either to avoid blowing a transmission pushing heavy wet snow with a regular plow and/or because the configuration of the area makes piling snow an impossibility. Looks like they are actually moving the snow to someplace else. The power is currently on. Was going on and off with such regularity during the night it was making me think some assholes at the electric company were playing with one of those clap on/clap off things. 90% of the Cape is without power. Have no clue why this side of the road still has power but am thankful for it. Windchill is 0 at the moment. Winds are down to the more managable and less worrisome range - sustained up to 40, gusts to 60 mph range. Trees seem to be holding their own so far which is just freakin amazing. Road I can see is snow covered but passable. Cant use salt on the roads here because of the water table. The salt sub doesnt work quite as well in these temps. Number 1 brother from northern RI is reporting 2 feet and still snowing. Cant reach bro number 2. Have yet to be able to reach my Mom in the middle of RI. Had her charge her cell and spent a half hour going over just press the green button. Write it down. Green button. Even practiced answering calls with the green button. Hope everyone is safe out there. |
just came in from trying to find our snow shovel going to ask the baby girl where it went. I know where it was when i left for work yesterday
while walking i the yard the snow that isnt drifted is up almost to my waist and the drifts r even deeper. went to check on a neighbor cuz i hadnt seen any lights on over there since i got up before 6 and didnt want to wake them too early. they didnt even realize some1 had turne them off so i got a work out walking over and back thru snow that was up to my hip for most of the trip |
HOLY CATS! There is A LOT of snow here - in Northampton, MA.
It is still coming down, but very lightly, in fact it is hard to tell if it is still snowing or if the wind is just blowing what we have around. It is still very windy. But we have power. It flickered a few times last night but we never lost it. I just took my dog out for his morning walk... the snow is over my knees and over his head. We have between 24-30" of snow in a level measure and ginormous drifts. I got my first of many workouts foraging a path through the backyard and to the bike path. We had another robocall from the Fire Chief to say: Be sure that furnace exhaust vents and gas dryer vents are not obstructed by snow drifts and make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working. They've had multiple calls through out the night for carbon monoxide. |
Portsmouth NH checking in....
Good morning all! We did not loose power which was the best news! The winds were big last night but not as fierce like Kobi reported. Sometimes Portsmouth misses out on the most brutal winds from storms due to the storms trajectory along the coastline. I don't know if that makes sense but I've noticed storms might sail by us and hit the coast of Maine as close as 20 miles away. Still we got snow. Snow and wait for it.... another day of snow to come. The drifts are quite interesting and oddly beautiful. Not so much for the 1st floor of our apartment building, they are covered up. Actual accumulations... impossible to tell given the drifts. I'd have to guess 16 inches. So far. |
We definitely didn't get as much as the northeastern states, but South Jersey did get a decent amount of accumulation. TV said our town got 1.9 inches, but um, no. There was at least 4-5 inches out there and more in some areas due to wind drifts.
I'm almost jealous of the areas that got 3 feet - I'm such a snow bunny and I don't mind shoveling - but then again, after reading what some are going through - maybe I'm not so jealous. Please stay safe and warm and please heed warnings about staying indoors. I heard that there are cars stuck out on the LI Expressway since yesterday because they failed to listen to state of emergency orders. Granted, no one ever takes those seriously, but in this case, I guess they should have. |
This pretty much captures the sentiments here:

Pete's mother does not know how to use her cell phone, not at all. There have been times when we haven't been able to reach her, for one cockamamie reason or another. It is infuriating. She thinks I'm sweet because I am concerned, but It's Pete I am concerned about, and her worries and fears. |
Well I've been watching a neighbor uncover her car for a good 40 minutes. She is now attempting to drive. Okay....
In any event the snow remains heavy and winds in the 30mph range. I'll go dig out the car for exercise and just to get the first layer off. Then I'll clean and cook. |
Ahahahaaaaa...
Had to walk it into work. Taxi services were backed up for an hour. Two feet of snow walking all the way in and in some spots to my crotch. Yessah bubb , its getting wicked nasty out there! 9 boys in shelter so I have plenty of shovelers to clear the drifts from the doors. Yay for teen boys on a snowy day! :cigar2: |
Our snowfall doubled overnight...just measured 16 inches in my yard...drifting not too bad....still flaking out there.....the beauty of it is breath taking.... Happy you see you all safe and warm out on the coast!

Off to the store I go, after about a foot or snow of snow overnight. Hold my coffee and watch this...

BE CAREFUL when shovelling snow please!!
CIJS: To everyone...if you have to shovel snow...please exercise extreme caution..and shovel for a bit....rest..and shovel some more. Heart attacks tend to be more prone to happen to people who don't normally get such a cardio workout...and shovelling snow IS a major cardio workout..so PLEASE....Use extreme caution..I want to see everyone's smiling faces here for a long time...:vigil:

Hope everyone in Nemo's path is doing well.

I can't imagine a whippet in deep snow! They have like the lowest BMI of the entire animal kingdom. But at least she doesn't have to deal with salt getting jammed up between the little velvety pads of her paws. |
Bless my hipster landlord, in his neon green snow pants (no hat :|), wrangling a snowblower through the mountains of drifts that surround the house.
Here are a couple of photos I took this morning: Cosmo after having stepped off the front porch step http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...f0bd8d5a17.jpg My car is the lump on the right http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...02d8274485.jpg I've got to go take care of that soon before it becomes a volvo-cicle. The garden that we traversed to get to the bike path, the drift to the left is the gas grill, and in the center the outdoor table and chairs. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...78c6084e6d.jpg Another view from the garden, of the table and chairs http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...43b4af58ee.jpg |

My wonderful neighbours had already shoveled part of my walk for me by the time I dragged my sorry butt out into a landscape covered in hideous white crap. Why do people like this stuff? It's cold and wet. In fact, it's the very definition of cold and wet since it's really just piles of fluffy ice crystals. Ice is always evil. I still can't figure out why anyone would volountarily leave a perfectly good house to flounder around in this kind of mess while wearing planks on their feet. I think they all must be mad.
I just finished shoveling out the car. I probably won't be able to convince myself to spend more time wallowing around in cold, white crap today, so my street motorcycles are going to have to wait another day to be rescued. At least they're under covers and the race bike is in the shed. Ugh. |
All is well here. Snow has stopped and the sky is blue. I shoveled and shoveled and shoveled this morning. Driveway is clear. Dog is very happy. He loves when I shovel the snow right into his face so he can eat it.
Roads are very clear. I'm impressed. Stay safe everyone, I know it's still pretty bad up the coast! |
