Today was interesting.

I woke before 7am and couldn't get back to sleep so I opted to go visit the gym, sure that I'd be alone in my early morning Easter endeavors.

Just as I got to the gate around the corner from the fitness center, a bunny jumped out of the bushes and zipped past me.

Yes, the Easter bunny tried to give me a heart attack.

Then I got dive bombed by a dove.

Second heart attack attempt of the day and all within seconds of one another.

Then I got into the gym and completed my workout. I kept it simple since it's been a while since I've hopped on ye ole treadmill. One hour with slowly increasing increments of speed and incline. Towards the end of it, I was definitely working up a sweat.

Heart attack attempt three?

Eh, so that's my excitement for the day I hope.

Happy bunnicula day!

I am back on the beach. It's hard to believe how much damage can be done by two weeks of being sedentary.

I wonder how long it will take to get back to where I was?

Doesn't really matter, I am so glad to be back out. :cheesy:

Congrats on being back on the beach!

I may have missed something, so forgive me if you covered this already but why were you sedentary if you did not want to be? I understand the beach is your preferred workout and that there was something going on that prohibited you from enjoying it for a couple of weeks but there are plenty of other places to walk too.

I'm lost.

Happy whatever you call today day!

Sorry for the info gap. :)

Two weeks every spring the beach is closed for "erosion control", bulldozers push stuff back where it is supposed to be according to parks dept, and two weeks later mother nature puts it back where she wants it. An expensive and pointless tug-of-war. Mother nature always wins.

As far as other places go, I can't do hard surfaces anymore (blown shocks) and don't have a membership anywhere with an elliptical, the other option, so I just wait it out.

The older I get, the more I realize that sittin' around just doesn't work out well.

Viva la Beach!!!!

My ideal exercises _ got to do one today!

Thanks to the warmer day here in urban N.E. Jersey, I got to ride my bike in the park and weave through the walkers (no bike path here), who were very accommodating (I live around very sweet people). With my music in my ears and the wind in my face and my body and bike as one pumping machine....almost perfection!! Did five miles at 7 per hour, so don't picture me as a female Lance without the enhancers. I started to stitch up because it's been so long since I've been breathing hard in the cool air and exercising. I'm sure that stitch will pass (what causes that, btw?)

Biking and swimming are my two top ones! Because I have slight (very slight, thank you Universe) knee-impact issues they are the best! Since I don't belong to a gym with a pool, I'll have to wait for that one when Kooch and I are back in Lakewood on some weekends after Labor Day.

Thanks for starting the thread! It's a good one.

Hi nycfembbw!
Considering I have had a severe case of torn chest muscles since December. Worst pain I have ever known. I started light duty exercise today. They will never heal if I don't quit doing normal for me. All the Pulmonary Specialist said was you will be in a lot of pain for a long time and please, please do not use that dewalt 20 volt max cordless reciprocating saw until you are totally well. It vibrates very hard. This demolition saw is so powerful, it will knaw through anything. Oh, so sweet! I could tell you some stories about it. I have been using my craftsman 6 AMP corded one. The doc made no mention of that one. She only said the cordless one. I think I just got some understanding and acceptance about it this weekend.

Today I have been very slowly organizing my lumber and painting plywood panels. My new lawnmower needs a waterproof home. Leaving to pick it up shortly. I'm so excited. This time I got high wheels in the back. :) Fun!

Happy day to you, nycfembbw!
Brock

My 'Happy Bunny-land Day' got off to a late start because I didn't get home until early this morning. I worked a concert venue last night.

The only thing I have planned for today is going to a BBQ this evening:
but to get there, I have to walk about 40 blocks after getting off the train. Getting there is easy (going downhill), but coming back I have to walk uphill.

But it's another gorgeous day here and I'm loving the sunshine and how warm it feels (about 70 degrees).

kannon 03-31-2013 03:35 PM

I chose not to workout today even though I should have. I decided to wait until tomorrow because I received a disturbing letter in the mail. It's amazing how some people can perceive a situation so differently.

Hollylane 03-31-2013 04:15 PM

Hiking to a new fishing spot, packing in and carrying out gear, and the (now) usual 1.5 mile (that is all the little short boy can handle) brisk walk with Obi.

Gráinne 03-31-2013 04:26 PM

Maybe if I write it here, I'll be accountable.

I've belonged to an inexpensive, no whistles and bells gym since November but got way off track :(. They have a program called Activetrax, in which you get a daily workout, alternating body parts-it's fun to increase strength and you get a neat little calendar of your progress. But I'm queen of excuses.

So, tomorrow, 1 April, I start over. Besides, with summer and Reunion coming up, I think I can do a lot of good over that time. Although just doing it for health and long-term counts more, I'm one of those who likes to have future events for motivation.

1.5 hours at the gym on a nice quiet Easter Sunday morning (elliptical, abs, weight lifting, stretching), then home for some good old-fashioned sex :D

Today's workout (which is also my favorite): a mix of walking and trail running.

I have gotten into the Zombies Run! app. It gives you a story line and also uses a mix of your own playlist in the app. It's fun to listen to, if you're into that kind of thing. Although, I must say that if you run in an isolated area like I do, hearing people scream "RUN RUN RUN!!!" at you through your headphones, along with yelling and moaning zombies...the first time or two you use the app will freak you out a little. Or....maybe I'm just becoming very easily spooked these days!! LOL

Had a great time at the BBQ last night, but did not end up walking too much - friends picked me up, once I got out to the West Hills.

It's my day off today; so I plan to go swimming, then relax in the hot tub. There are trails around the recreation center, so I will probably warm up my muscles by doing a little bit of stretching and walk a trail, before I go swimming.

Yah baby!!!

Ginger 04-04-2013 07:29 PM

Tonight I added a few stationary weight machines to my routine at the gym, a couple upper-body ones, and one where you stand, lean forward on a padded block and push with one leg at a time backwards, so that it is extended behind you. It feels like I would imagine water ballet feels. ("Ballet" sounds inflated but I don't know what else to call it.)

While I was waiting for one of the ab machines, I talked to a woman who told me she's 59, and had been away from the gym for a couple years and was just getting back into it. But she has a boyfriend, 37, who keeps her young. She's french/Spanish, and he's Jamaican, 6'4" and has two kids of his own.

I've found that since I stopped wearing headphones at the gym, I have a lot more conversations with people.

This is so true. When I am at the beach I don't wear headphones and I also don't wear sunglasses unless I am walking right into the sun. I think that the fact I am alone also makes me more approachable. People will stop and strike up conversation all the time. I have made a lot of friends just by not blocking them out or being too absorbed with my own thing. I think what you are doing is great!

I am attempting, for the 3rd time, p90x. I always get to the yoga day, the 4th day, and get defeated. That day hurts me so much I can never get past it. But THIS time I monitored myself and didn't put myself down for not doing all that they do in the video.
I Now got to day 5!!!!!
Hopefully I shall continue!!

Hollylane 04-04-2013 09:00 PM

30 minutes on the dreadmill at an incline, 30 minutes of weights, 2 miles with Obi(the little guy was a trooper tonight!).

I had planned to do my favorite video tonight, Hip Hop Abs, but I have to run back to the office, so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

MarquisdeShey 04-04-2013 09:37 PM

Today I went for a walk at the park with a pack of 4/5/6 graders and swung as high as I could - for an hour.

kannon 04-04-2013 09:54 PM

Well I did a partial workout. I have a few more bicep curls and I'll be finished for the day.

DaddiBear 04-04-2013 09:55 PM

My exercise today was going up and down the stairs repeatedly doing laundry...lol

Cailin 04-04-2013 09:58 PM

Walking around all day- and funnily enough, to the gym by my apartment to see if i want to get a membership there.

SuddenlyWestFemme 04-04-2013 11:49 PM

I had my first pole dance exercise class today. It was surprisingly fun! And I bet I'm going to be a bit sore tomorrow. :)

Was it a Brass Ovaries class?

Those are supposed to be wicked fun!

Let us know how the classes go.

For myself, I'm still battling some major crud so my main form of exercise (besides walking tons, which I do every day I work) is defining my abs through the practice of coughing my lungs up.

Last time I was on a swing set I realized it was a heck of an ab workout. (The next day)

I walked.....from the bedroom to the living room....feels like miles today....tomorrow will be better....just wish I could have an iron infusion...lol

It was a Devine Movement class. Teaches Boudior and Pole. It really was wicked fun! (love the east coast slang!) Of course this morning, my upper arms and core ache and it was only the first beginners class. Ugh and lol.

Hollylane 04-05-2013 10:42 PM

Hip Hop Abs, and a very rainy walk with Obi, who now smells like wet dog (because he is one), despite three fluffy towels...He did not enjoy the rain, at all.

I start a 10-week fitness "bootcamp" on Monday. It's not just exercise, it incorporates a nutrition component as well. I'm a bit apprehensive, it looks like a VERY intense program...but I'm also pretty excited about it too. The people that I've met who have done the program, or who are still doing it now, all seem like one big family. And the results are just amazing! How I look has never mattered to me...but I know I've been ignoring what is best for my health for some time now so I'm especially looking forward to feeling better.

does dancing in the kitchen while I did chores count?

Ginger 04-06-2013 09:03 AM

Yesterday I took that walk again at lunch where I go alongside the Hudson to where it opens into New York Harbor. The paved path winds past restaurants, little harbors with boats, mazes of tulips and benches; you get the picture. The water was choppy and slapping at the pilings. I stopped this time to walk through the memorial to the Irish Famine, which is built around an excavated stone house. The weather was spectacular. There's nothing like New York on a clear day. When you can see forever.

I totally understand. I am also terrified by the time I reach full height! It's a mental workout too!

Sparkle 04-06-2013 08:04 PM

I met up with a friend/former colleague for a 4-mile hike round the reservoir basin at Mt. Tom. We chatted and laughed and caught up on the last couple of years and walked a 15-min/mile pace. The first substantial outdoor exercise I've had since the onset of winter. It was sunny but so windy and brisk. I was glad I was wearing layers. It was invigorating, I could have done another 4-mile loop. I might go again for a double loop tomorrow.

The Mind & The Body

Over the past few days, due learning about the health condition of my youngest brother who I guess is now diabetic, I began to rethink my position on certain items I have always told myself that I must have, daily. Like coffee. Sometimes I drink too much coffee. So anyway, I am making a change in my own thinking processes about why I think I need to have coffee with copious amounts of sweetness and I've come to the conclusion that I really need to change that part of my health behaviors.

So I am going to drink more water and less coffee and place stringent limits on my coffee consumption.

In exercise news (for my body): ;)

I decided that I need to walk differently; in that I need to do a bit of breathing exercises too - so that I can get my body metabolism to reach new heights - while walking on a daily basis.

I experimented with doing that, breathing differently while walking, and I found out that I felt better when I breathed deeply while walking. I guess I haven't been breathing too deeply, except when out of breath while trying to climb up hills or stairs. But I was thinking that I breathe deeply when I'm doing my jumping routines on the trampoline, which causes me to burn more calories and so, the scientist in me decided that I needed to do that when I'm walking, too. I get a bit sweaty when I'm doing that now, breathing deeper while walking, but I think it's making a difference. Especially since I made changes with drinking more water.

In short: Drinking more water and getting sweaty while walking now makes me more aware of the fact that I need better shoes for walking and if I keep doing what I'm doing, at least I will feel better and hopefully by summer, look a bit better too. For certain, since I changed what I am doing this week, I definately feel better on a day to day basis.

:bouquet:

Now that we aare haveing such nice warm weather,I cn be outside more, yesterday I played with my fur kids a while then shot hoops till I felt a pinch in my right shoulder when I shot a right hand hook shot so I quit for the day( I played for a soild half Hour).Today (sunbday) I will do more of the same but will go nordic walking for a bit to get started in ernest about exersiseing.I didn't really put out much effort dureing the winter cause of the bad arthritis prob I had,I could have done it I just chickened out.I only gained 7 pounds dureing that time so even with that is o.k. not 20 or more like I usely do.

Sparkle 04-07-2013 04:11 PM

I was planning to go to the gym for a run on the treadmill today but when I took the dog out for his walk I realized it was actually quite mild, despite being grey and windy.

I decided to hop on the bike path and walk 2-miles down the hill to the market for a few groceries I needed and back again, as my exercise for today.

Seen: 1 black bear, 1 ginormous skunk.

I see black bears every spring and every autumn, just a block from my house in a densely wooded section of land that the bike path cuts through. For a couple of weeks, twice a year, it's like a bear super highway out there. I've become quite accustomed to them. And so long as they're a fair distance away, I think it's pretty amazing to share the space with them.

The skunk, however, gave me pause... :| I considered re-routing and going a mile or so out of my way (skunks can move really quickly and you don't need to be terribly close to get sprayed) but it had scurried up the embankment about 15-ft away, I stuck to the far outer edge of the path and picked up my pace to pass it.

I guess everyone is up from their long winters' nap.

(Me included.)

Gráinne 04-08-2013 07:55 PM

My daughter has gotten into competitive swimming. She will be swimming for a local team this summer, then for her high school next fall. In order to actually teach her to swim correctly (she's never had a formal lesson), I hired a trainer. I see a lot of difference just in two sessions. You never know, Michael Phelps had to start somewhere!

Anyway, we meet at UALR's pool, and after the lesson, she got permission to hang around and dive, just fool around. And so did I! It felt so great to swim laps again, much like meeting an old friend. I like to imagine my problems and challenges written on cement blocks that fall off of me as I go, making me lighter and faster. I picture them small and manageable down at the bottom of the pool. When I'm done, not only have I exhausted myself in a good way, worked out my body, but at the least I can feel a little better about what I'm struggling with.

I know I've been dealing with depression for most of the winter. To get out of this, I've tried to remember what I was doing when I felt my happiest and most joyful. One thing was that I was extremely active. At one point, I was a runner, dancer and a swimmer, though not on a competitive level. I was just always going. When I retired from dance, and thus from all the rest of that, I lost myself. I told my counselor that I wanted to find myself again, and I suspect that in the pool is one way to do it.

For me, it's not even about getting in shape or losing weight. If I think like that, I'll quit. I call those laps (or dance, or running-if I can run again) a kind of meditation.
