In addition to your GPS (ha ha), one learned to become very proficient at map reading. .A person used his or brain to calculate distance, grade, and road conditions. One carefully unfolded said map, rolling it rolled as a tube for easier access. You'll still see us driving along with a dashboard full of maps. I have never programmed a GPS.
Still love those maps from Welcome Centers even when I get the strangest looks for other cars. Taking the back roads can also help make the distance. One time in college, we make it from Eugene OR to New Orleans LA in about 24 hours. Not to toot my own horn, I have pretty traveled the 48 contiguous, Mexico, lower Canada, USVI, and last but certainly not least ...Puerto Rico (very beautiful)
We were moving. I had to be at my Nursing Boards in Milwaukee via Nashville via Birmington via Chicago just a few days later. Oh, to be that young again
