Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Giants Of Jazz Copenhagen 1971
I love how jazz musicians play the same songs over and over and over again, but work at bringing something new to it each time. Love, love, love that. This set starts with "Round Midnight," a song written by Monk. The fabulous and well-known intro to the song (as shown here in the first 30 seconds of this version that's played superbly by Miles Davis) was written by Dizzy Gillespie. After Dizzy came up with this intro in the 1940s, it pretty much became the standard opening for this tune. Well, what I like about the start of this set, is that Monk chose not to use any intro at all and just, BAM, went right into the song. It's small things like this that puts a smile on my face. Still, the intro to this song, played by Miles, is probably my favorite intro to a song—bar none. |
