I am really horribly disappointed that the femme conference steering committee has no women of age. Looks like the face of older femmes is not part of their commitment to representing femmes. Older femmes are in visible even to other femmes.

Isadora,u and all the other femmes are definatly visable hear. But u have brought up a valid point cause this feeling of in visablity to our own home community happeneds to many older butches as well as femms.

Due to financial reasons I won't be able to go to the femme conference... but I find it disheartening to hear this. Maybe someone can start something before it is too late. Thanks for bringing this up Isa... we only get better as we age don't we! I am definately better at this age then any other!

Jet 03-09-2010 05:46 PM

i'm not invisible in the least nor do i feel as such, i'm happy to say.

Soft*Silver 03-09-2010 05:59 PM

Did you know I am working on a book about silver femmes and crone butches? I myself am a silver femme....I thought about offering a proposal on aging for that conference but I would never be able to pay for the fees, let alone the hotel....

I know that I have never felt prettier than I do now...and while people tell me that they love my silver hair, they themselves would NEVAH let their hair go grey. Age is such a taboo subject...

I wonder where all the silver back butches are...maybe they are not inclined to come out and challenge the youth oriented BF culture. I know that I have looked for 55 and older...and few are found...

i went back and looked at the committee. Maybe no one over 50, but some amazing women in that group. i won't be attending either though even though i live nearby. i am kind of tired of gender ID politics and culture. Not finding them personally liberating right now. But i was impressed with that group.

Re the book softness is writing, totally cool. i do not not not want another ID category in my life though, so will not be adopting the silver femme one.

Yes I remember, you asked to interview me for that book on the other site and I declined. I hope it's going well for you.

I totally understand this...not much into it lately myself. I just find it interesting that probably no one is over 45. Amazing women do not make up for women over 50 being overlooked. I am not easily impressed anymore, just as women of color would not be impressed if they were ignored and left out, but that is me.

Well I'm not 55 yet, and its not silver, its white, and oh yes, I'm not a butch.

New vs older:

This invisablity i'm speaking about is simply not finding a place to belong in the queer world I live in.Even as little as five years ago it wasnt this way,I knew many folks of diffrent ages and then age wasnt a facrtor in anything..not so with the new group that has come along. For one thay are either tweeners or andros or questioning ...cetanly the people who were even close to my age have either broken up and left town or gone underground, the fue I do see hear and there simply dont acknowledge other gay people when we meet in public..not everyone, but the majority. It has become a place of terratorial(sp?) boundries in every bar we have hear.If anyone is over a certan age its like u r in a void,I thought it was just where I live but i'm finding it's other places as well.I was talking to friends of mine who live in another city and they are finding the same prob where thay live.Looks l,ike if u r older u are to old to belong anywhere.
