Gracie is super tiny and plays hard with super tiny toys. Right now, she's tearing the place apart with a well worn fabric stuffed tootsie roll toy. She flips it and taps it and swings it around from the kitchen tile to the plastic storage bin that's in the living room. I even found it stuffed in the sofa cushions today. Twice.
Loki is a big baby and spent 3 Fixer Uppers on my lap, laying on his back like a baby. He loves his head rubbed. And his chin. And his belly. He even likes his paws massaged and rubbed. |
Crate training is not going well. She howls her lil head off.
She's been very pissy today and every little thing upset her. She's STUBBORN and adorable. She's now being sweet and quiet, sitting next to me very amused with Alton Brown's voice on Good Eats. |
All the kittens are using their litter boxes now. I put a mom size and kitty sized one in their holding pen thinking mom role modeling the behavior would help them catch on and go in theirs. Nope, Survival Mom refuses to use it. Happily, one of the kittens figured it out all on his own. Then very quickly, the others catching on followed suit. Now they use both boxes and are getting better about reaching it in time. Three have completely trained themselves and never go anywhere but the box. The other two sometimes can't make it to the box in time to pee but like the others they are reliable about making it to the box in time for the other. So no coaching required. Lucky me! :)

My baby boy cuddled with me for a few minutes. He deigned to be spooned. That is VERY rare.
|
My babies loved on me. I adore them the most when they are quiet and relaxed in my lap.
Then they go bazonkers and that's the end of that. |
Aughhhhhh! That about sums it up. And it it isn't even noon yet. I'm fearing it's going to be a long...... day.

They played so hard today. I have a lot of pine trees on the ground surrounding the house ... the loggers brought them down last week and will soon return with a logging bed truck to haul them away.
Kevie, Jennifer and Jeffrey have worn themselves out playing chase around and over them. They are napping on the bed right now. :) |
woke me up with soft little kisses and morning cuddles....then they ordered me out of the house to fetch them toys and food! Now they are snoozing on the bed keeping one eye on me to make sure im not getting into trouble. Im well aware who runs this household!

The trio group in crime just faked needing a pottie break at 4:00 a.m. ... all they wanted was to go outside and sniff around. Not one squat from any one of them!!!!
*growling to self ... dragging me out on a joke call in these baggy pajama bottoms with broken drawstring that hit the ground soon as we got outside* :( |
Sleeping in front of the door. She’s a blast right now!
|
How do you get 3 unruly dogs to be quiet and behave? Turn on the vacuum and Dremel at the same time.
|
Survival Cat howling all day, announcing she's ready to get pregnant again. The kittens don't mind and Monte, napping right through it, seems oblivious. I didn't know they could go into heat so soon. Thank goodness he's neutered.

Gracie has been walking around with a toy yesterday and today. She's carrying it like prey even though it's half her size. It was on the end of a stretchy cord and it had a handle. They didn't really play with it at first but I wrapped the cord around a chair leg and so when they would bat it about, it'd bounce back. That got them interested really quick. It's taken a few days but she's popped it off of the cord and has lost about half the feathers. I give it another day or two before I'll have to toss it. For a little one, she's far more destructive than Loki.

Tiny Dog is so smart!!! A commercial came on tv with a dog in it. In the commercial, the dog drank some water out of a water bowl. (It was a commercial for Culligan water.) As soon as the dog on the tv started drinking, Tiny got up off the couch and went in the kitchen to drink some water.
I'm never really sure if Tiny Dog (and Diva Kitty) actually watch tv, or if they're just sitting in front of the tv because it's what I'm doing. But I really think they must catch at least some of it. Maybe it was only the sound of a dog taking a drink that made Tiny thirsty. Or maybe it was just a coincidence. Or maybe she really does love "Love It Or List It" as much as I do, and waits for the commercials to take a break to get water! |

I don't know whether to be proud that he watches TV or saddened that my fur son is a couch potato. |

I do get him those non stuffing toys they have now, but his joy is ripping out the stuffing. |
Survival Cat and her kittens moved out this evening. I'm taking it harder than I thought I would. It doesn't help that Monte in distress is concerned, calling out for them, searching around. Usually as I sit here at the computer he'll come over and standing up on his hind legs put his front paws on my leg to get my attention. Then once he has it he stares all soulful into my eyes in a deep mind meld kind of way , until I get up and see what he wants/leads me to. Look the door is shut please open it. Look people are making scary, unusual noises outside please help me shut the door. Look my bowl is empty please put food in it. I don't have to wonder what he wants because he takes me and shows me. And then I fix it. But now he's searching for his pals and I can't fix it, because well they're gone. It's way past his bedtime and I'm wondering how long this will last.

Diva Kitty has found a new hiding place somewhere. It's out of my line-of-sight from any of my usual sitting places, so when I call her (if she deigns to come to my call) I can't see where she comes from.
Tiny Dog has no interest in hiding. She is constantly at my side or snoozing somewhere nearby, ready to go out or be petted at any time. I think she waits until I go to work to take care of any doggie business she may have. |
I got a lot of affection this morning since it cooled down quite a lot in the night. Whenever it's chilly, I am the object of much love.
Yesterday she meowed and meowed. I discovered that I had closed a closet door, which is unthinkable. She must be free to explore. |
Diva Kitty has a medical problem :( . She is declawed, but one of her claws seems to have regrown and come through the bottom of her foot. Somehow, she must have been hiding it from me for awhile, because it's awfully long - like an inch and a half. She doesn't walk funny, and it doesn't look like it hurts her. I Googled it, and apparently this is a thing that can happen if, when they are declawed, the vet doesn't get all of the nail growth tissue. Poor thing! It's looks awful, but like I said, it doesn't seem to be bothering her at all.

Sniffed the car hop at sonic through the window earlier, she was hoping for food but was disappointed when he only gave me my drink.

A pack of coyotes were in our back woods this morning about 7:45. Jeffrey is the only one who heard them. I noticed his suspicious staring .... and a running to the back woods urge developing so I went and stood beside him. When he let go of one of his mature, deep barks, the coyotes took off running. That is when they became visible in the edge of the woods. I grabbed Jeffrey's collar because he started a lunge in that direction. Note Jeffrey became a year old this past Valentine's Day. He still has his puppy bark but gained an adult bark too.
Later, around 10:30, I texted the four neighbors around me, told them about the coyotes. The four of us always alert each other about events like these - provide a "heads up." The coyotes have never come in this close to the house before this incident. I was proud of Jeffrey's attentiveness to this. He is different than my bullies. I am wondering if it is the "hound dog" portion in him. |
Loki snuggled up and I rocked him like a baby. He actually likes that. He's such a sweet goof. I got some time with my baby girl, Gracie, as well. She's always going to have a bit of a feral streak so my snuggle time with her is very different than what I have with Loki.
I got him when he was around 10-12 weeks old and was able to handle him a lot so he's used to me rubbing him on his feet, chest, everywhere. We were able to clip his nails this way but I can't do it by myself so I'll be taking them both to get their nails clipped before too long. With Gracie, she has her moods and a lot of the time, she wants to be touched and petted like Loki but her instincts are to get out of the way of people, so she'll come close to me and then slide away when I hunker down. We've found a rhythm that seems to work for both of us. She will come near me and then switch around so her tushy is towards me. That way I can pet her back and tail, which she loves having her tail played with, and not feel as if she has to dash. She gets her space and her lovin' too. She does get into cuddling moods and will lay on my lap but they are far less frequent than Loki. If he had his way, we'd snuggle and cuddle a couple hours every day. Gracie's more of a snuggle and cuddle every other day kind of girl. I've never had a cat that has such a strong feral streak, so it was hard to not take it personally at first but now that we've gotten to know one another, I get her. She doesn't get me all the time but I get her. Even when they are running like wildfire through the house, I get it and feels really nice to know that she trusts me more than any other human in this world. That makes me feel great. |
They ate nanner popsicles and loved them
|
Nothing shes being lazy today! Shes having her afternoon nap right beside me as i type this.
|
they have laid on the bed giving me the stink eye, because we got almost 2" of snow today so no walk.
|
I have this super long shoestring like thing. So I am tossing it at her, and she is grabbing it, but only when it lands within paw reach. If it accidentally lands too far away, requiring her to get up to grab it, she shows no interest. I landed it within paw reach once and she didn't grab it, so I started hauling it back in when GRAB. It was like she said, stoopid human, it is mine. I just didn't see the point in bothering until you made me.
This is play with a lazy cat. |
Apparently, Gracie heard what I said about her and said "hrmph". She crawled into my lap last night and was very cuddly and snuggly, rubbing her head on me and everything. She's so sweet when she wants to be.
I've had a bit of snuggling with both of them today. It took her a while to come out from under the bed after I put the vacuum away, though. |
It's almost time for me to go house sit and take care of the pets at my BFF's house. Simon is an old pup (jack russell) and Toffee is half blind (blue healer shepherd lab mix) and Petunia is my favorite caT in the world.
Last month the dogs got sprayed by a skunk nesting under their back porch, which created all kinds of chaos and trouble (to the tune of thousands of dollars in house damages). :| My caT is a saint tho. She never causes that kind of trouble. I love reading about everyone's pet stories, thanks for sharing about your pets at home! :hk20: |
Grace Morgan is on a mission to prove me wrong. She crawled into my lap for a major love fest all on her own and without additional bidding from me.
I think Lokie's a little jealous. He was giving us the side eye. |
Got into the neighbors yard via a hole in the fence that the contractor's didnt fix when putting up the new fence. My mom had to go corral her and bring her back home. I was gone.

Requesting suggestions.
I want to add a dog to my family within the next 5 years. The breed must be gentle but fierce when needed. It must be good with kids and cats, useful around the ranch, and not afraid to take on predators like coyotes and wild cats. I like bird dogs like pointers and setters but I am not sure that they are the best choice. The Newfoundland seems like a good fit but I am not sure if it can handle the Texas heat. I also considered the Great Pyrenees but since I don't plan on adding live stock that may be more dog than I need. Any suggestions? |

"The most common LGDs in Texas are Great Pyre- nees, Anatolian Shepherds, Maremma, or Akbash. These or similar guardian dog breeds are highly suggested. Breeds that do not have strong protective instincts are less likely to be effective. Breeds whose instinct is to hunt or herd have behaviors that are counterproductive to guarding small ruminants and rarely become effective LGDs. Survey data indicates that the Great Pyrenees is the most common guardian dog, primarily because it is a good guardian breed and is the least aggressive towards people and livestock." https://www.quora.com/Can-a-dog-kill-a-coyote I know you are probably looking for personal experience, since you posted here, but I was curious enough to google the question. I like the look of the Anatolian Shepherd, personally. Why are you thinking that a Newfoundland would be a good choice? |
Quote:
The Great Pyreness was my first choice but after my research it seemed that the Newfoundland was a better fit. The Newfoundland is a working dog, good with kids and cats, and would rescue me if I got hurt alone on the ranch. I have not made a decision yet but I am doing research on different dogs. I consider this to be a life time commitment and I want to find the best fit for the canine and me. I welcome all suggestions because I want to make an informed decision. Like I said above this is a commitment. Chad |
It's good to do research because you don't want to get a dog that doesn't fit your life. That wouldn't work for you or them and will just create an unhappy dog and human. I found a neat link that lists a lot things to consider about the Pyrenees, like they are hard to train, bark a LOT, have a thick, heavy coat, require a lot of exercise and drool quite a bit.
Great Pyrenees Dog Breed Also, there's this article. Something else to consider besides breed traits is the individual animal. I've had a miniature Irish Setter that didn't fit a lot of either of his mixed breed traits (Setter and Chihuahua) and a Shit Zhu that ticked the list nearly all the way down. Have you considered a shelter dog? To be thread compliant, my Loki is warming my spot on the sofa and Gracie is holding down the back of the sofa....oh, wait....she just moved. Not sure where but I'm sure they will both be in the kitchen in a minute when I go in to put down their kibble lunch. Yep, that's where they are now. He's eating and she's delicately bathing. |
