A week ago from yesterday (Saturday DEC 10th) I took a 50 lb bag of Purina Dog Chow to our local Humane Shelter. I do that sometimes. I noticed there was a very small two year old female Jack Russell mix hiding in the back of her cage. She was so sad looking. I opened her cage and I know I saw a tear under her eye. I asked an employee about her. He told me Jill's heart is broken and that she misses her family. She has been there over two months. I stayed with her awhile, went back the next day, took milk bones and treats to her. We went outside and walked. She began to warm up to me.I took photos of her and have been trying to find her a home.

I would have brought Jill home but knew my mix bullies would have hurt her - they play so rough. I went 3 days last week to visit on my lunch hour. Bought her a 2 pack of Purina Busy Bones for todays visit. When I arrived, a very nice family had Jill out of her cage - they were petting her. Then they took her outside on a lease. I knew they were going to adopt her.

completing former post ...

I played with Jill, talked to the family. She loved her Busy Bone.

The family started inside to fill out her adoption papers. I scooped Jill up one last time, told her what a good girl she is and that I loved her.

I was smiling as I walked to my truck ... hoping no one saw the tear under my eye.

A dog's Christmas ;)

Not necessarily today, but a few days back...

As I stood at the dresser poking about in my jewelry box pondering whether peace signs or pink glitter would adorn my ears, I saw in the corner of my eye my 10-year-old arthritic and blind mini doxie wander into my dressing room where I've been stashing all the holiday loot yet to be wrapped. Quietly poking about like a professional sleuth she sniffed out the bag that contains the bulk of her holiday prizes. I didn't say a word just watched with a smile, trying on earrings and pretending not to notice. Sure 'nuff I saw the tail give a short wag and then the ears perk up. She tilted her head this way and that, even looking o'er her doggy shoulder to peer my way with her brown eyes that don't see so well. Then eased in close and tugged at the tail of a squeaky toy, ever so gently. I could almost hear her canine musings: *I wonder if Santa Paws came early, 'cause I know this is meant for me. Maybe Mom won't notice if I just.... * Oh so cute! Of course, it's not yet the time for opening the presents, so I had to give a "tsk, tsk" and shoo her out of the room. But like a kid, she couldn't stand it, whenever my back was turned she went right back in the room and tried to find "her" bag of loot. I ended up hiding everything in the closet behind closed doors. I can't wait for Christmas. I love my li'l hound dog. And she gets so excited over opening presents. Her health has been fragile the past few years and it's reminded me she's no pup. So I'll treasure every tail wag and hound-dog howl that I get this season and if I'm lucky my Christmas present next year will be that she's still here with me to open presents on Christmas morning.

...not really a smile, but rather a strong sense of satisfaction catching someone in their own lie. after being raked over the coals for my own mistakes, it feels somewhat gratifying!
