Yes, Seattle's Bumbershoot 2020 is cancelled...
But what is Bumbershoot you may ask......well
Now in its fourth decade, Bumbershoot (a oldie time word for umbrella) is more of an institution than a music festival. There’s so much happening here that you need all three days to sort through all the live music, art shows, speakers, and exhibitions happening under the Bumbershoot. With a budget friendly price (and children under ten are FREE), this fest is one of the most affordable and family friendly of the season. Sidebar: Bumbershoot is always held Labor Day week-end. |
https://media.cntraveler.com/photos/...8_2017-246.jpgArtist Anish Kapoor completed his stainless-steel sculpture "Cloud Column" before he completed "The Bean," perhaps his most famous work, in Chicago. But when "Cloud Column" was installed in Houston in 2018, it incited a gentle, light-hearted ribbing between journalists at the Chicago Tribune and the Houston Chronicle, who debated whose mammoth, cylindrical, highly polished artwork was more impressive. The gleaming 32-foot high sculpture acts as a mirror to passersby, who can’t resist taking selfies—especially in the portion of the artwork that inverts their reflection. Even art novices might be inspired to read more about Kapoor's process; after "Cloud Column" was finished, the piece was polished for three years. And until you're standing right in front of it, you can't appreciate its proportions. |

September issue of Chicago Magazine gives raves to...
Choong Man Chicken 9850 N Milwaukee Ave (Glenview)
Choong Man's Korean fried chicken packs a crunch. They offer fried chicken a number of ways, including tenders, in sandwiches, salads, rice bowls and of course, just platters, mounded onto plates. But there are quite a few unique touches. "We marinate for 24 hours before we fry. It can have a very unique taste. Very important that we get a unique sauce from South Korea, from the franchise headquarters. We submerge the chicken in that sauce for 24 hours," said Manager Denny Kim. The dredging process alone is worth noting. All-natural, never-frozen chicken is marinated, then dredged - aggressively - in that proprietary mix. Then a brief dip in water - that's what promotes a craggly exterior - then a second dredge and a vigorous shake to remove excess flour, then finally into the oil, where it fries until golden brown. At this point, you have four sauce options, including garlic-soy, creamy curry or spicy barbecue. Then, in a move rarely, if ever, seen locally, the chicken is placed into a heavy duty oven, fed by hardwood charcoal, where it roasts for a few more minutes, sealing and solidifying the exterior. At this point, it's ready to eat. Or, you could have it mounded with soy-tossed and shredded scallions. Consider getting the snow onion treatment, which is a massive handful of shaved white onions, drenched in a creamy white sauce, for a cool contrast to that hotter, crispier chicken. Sidebar: They are following all Covid safety protocols & offer outdoor seating under a tent. |

Chicago Botanic Garden......
In October, take a walk from the Botanic Garden's visitor center to the Conservation Science Center to see the many colorful perennials and fruit-bearing shrubs. Marvel at the Japanese maples as they turn red like fire and, if you're lucky, you'll see the filigreed sumacs transform into a remarkable mix of orange, green and red.
If you around in November, take an autumn walk in the Dixon Prairie. It's also a peaceful escape. |
Lurie Garden Chicago.........
Looking to catch some fall color earlier in the season? This 2.5-acre landscape in the midst of Millennium Park (just south of the Pritzker Pavilion's Great Lawn) turns into a fiery prairie come September. The lush garden fills with colorful fall blooms like balloon flowers, black-eyed Susans and Moonshine Yarrow. Before you leave, snap a photo from the footbridge, where you can see vibrant layers of foliage set against the city skyline.
