canmarielan 12-18-2010 02:08 AM

Okay folks, Sassybren pointed out that we would be hard pressed to get dinner over for all of us in an hour. She thought that maybe 7 for the boat ride might be more realistic.

Arwen 12-18-2010 10:31 PM

Yay. Thanks to the kindness of strangers (okay, just strange, really), I will be there tomorrow for dinner and the boat ride. Mi Terra, here I come!:praying:

Hey Austin! Save this date. 3/5/2011. I turn 50 on 3/8 and I also want to do a house warming. I'm going to do them at the same time.

AND, my birthday is on Mardi Gras this year. Wasn't it nice of the Catholic church to throw a huge party in New Orleans for me?

I'll be sending out invites, etc so please, if you think I may not have your email, send it to me. :)

P. to the S. If you aren't local, you are still invited, so there!

I'll be working at a storage facility. I think the Universe is telling me my days of working in offices is over, unfortunately. But I'll still have a lot of customer interaction, improve my Spanish, and be able to play wi....er, I mean, drive the golf cart.

*grin*

You should at least understand, if not speak, Spanish in Texas. It's that next door to Mexico thing and makes communication so much easier.

Diva 12-23-2010 09:40 PM

I speak/understand minimal Spanish and seem to do ok....thankfully, at the hospital, we have translators. And my yardguys teach me all the naughty words I need to lead a fulfilling life. :eyebat:

Gemme 12-23-2010 09:52 PM

It depends on where you are and what you're doing I suppose. Once I'm fully trained, I'll be working by myself and half our clientele speaks Spanish, so it behooves me to learn it, otherwise it could lead to misunderstandings or lost business.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing to know Spanish....for the very reasons you stated.

But knowing Spanish is not a prerequiste for living in Texas, that's all.

a guy i used to work with recommended using rosetta stone language courses. he said it was very easy and didn't take long at all. i believe he used it for russian, chinese and aramaic languages.

Why would it be unusual to need to know Spanish is Texas? Many of us call it Tejas. :) Mexico is our southern border. Our heritage is better for their influence. Similarly in my home state of Louisiana--the Spanish held it before the French took over. In fact, you can tell who won by what they call the moss hanging from the trees.

The Spanish called it Frenchman's Beard but the French tagged it Spanish Moss.

I love the cultural diversity our lovely melting pot of a country has, don't you?

i think spanish should be required as a second language here. it will give a good base for italian and french, as well.

i found a large hispanic population when i lived out east, in the mid-atlantic and even in the midwest (which also has a sizable bosnian population).

it seems to me that the folks who immigrate to the US are one up on the rest of us here....they speak two languages (at minimum) to our one. i can't understand why we (americans) are so arrogant to say "you're in america, you need to speak english". i have to wonder how many of those folks travel abroad and manage to master the native language of the places they visit.

good on you, gemme, for recognizing the need for more than standard american to sharpen your work skills...not to mention broadening your entire world.

You know what? :) I'd be a happy third on that (and go last in the rotation as well). I used to speak Spanish as a little girl and would love to again.
