So, who is pulling the plug?

Hey Kobi -

We actually have a couple of things happening right now. Yesterday, our site was down for a bit because our hosting company had a systemwide outage due to various issues.
I posted a thread about it on the front page but basically what happened was that Media Temple had an issue large enough to cause not only our site to lose service, but literally hundreds of sites.

This morning, we had a different issue arise. We hit a memory limit on our site usage which caused our operating component to shut down. This is both a good and bad thing. Good because it means that the site is growing and is evidence that more and more folks are using the site every day. Bad because it means we are going to have to upgrade our memory in order to accommodate our increase in traffic.

I'll be posting more about this issue once I speak to Linus.

Thanks!

Medusa,

Thanks for the update. I have no idea what you said but something
about a woman talking techy makes me feel warm and tingly. :)

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Jack says the same thing! (and I feel the same when she starts going on about welding/construction talk) :)

I suspect the memory issue is a side-effect of the network attack against the provider yesterday.

Heck yeah - And I saw on the wire this morning that Amazon cloud was hit as well!!

Linus 04-21-2011 10:42 AM

Hrmm.. be interesting to find out who was the source of this. It's a bit old school to use DDOS attacks these days to bring someone down. The last time that this kind of stuf was done was when Mafia Boy did it against a variety of sites, effectively knocking them out for 12+ hours.

ETA: I checked. Amazon's was due to their own error. Something happened to their storage in the backend.

I may or may not have stared at the computer glassy- eyed with this explanation....

I may or may not have forgotten entirely what I was thinking previously to reading this.

I may or may not have almost drooled with the techie talk.

I may or may not be in big trouble with MBE now...

And our provider wasn't the only one hit: http://news.google.com/news/more?pz=...l-RndOELkF-BRM

You know you are addicted to a site when you are at work texting your Daddy and other friends trying to figure out if its you or the site :giggle: Glad you are back up and running!

And yes sweet Daddy, you were staring glassy eyed and someone else had to tell me it wasnt me.. lol...

Is the 'ignore thread' feature new or am I especially non-observant lately?

I think it's a great idea, especially for triggering and controversial threads, whether it's new or not.

It is new but hasn't been officially announced since there are a couple of bugs we need to address before saying it's good to go. You can try it but I believe on the front page you may still see threads you've ignored.

Nina 04-28-2011 01:23 PM

Where are you seeing the thread? Front page? In a search?

Nina 04-28-2011 01:28 PM

I am seeing the thread(s) on the front page
and
I did log off, came back and still see the threads

you don't have to spend time on it...I can just close my eyes :)

That's the one bug we're attempting to track down. It's a conflict between the ignore thread option and what we use to create our fancy front page. If you go to New Posts, you'll likely not see the thread at all even if it does appear on the front page.

Nina 04-28-2011 01:34 PM

okay...thanks...I'd like it to be off the front page since that's what I look at...
but, I can do what I already do, and not read things I don't want to read, I just find that (at the moment at least) I am getting irritated at the listings which irritate me...lucky for me I am able to get over myself! :)
