After the breakup of the 10 year relationship.....I didn't want to hear anything....all I wanted to do for months on end is get past the horrendous pain I felt.
Then I enjoyed songs like 'You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine' - Lou Rawls

Delicate balance -

I dont think any song ever got me through a break up. God, if it was just that easy !

But if I hear a song that played during a relationship break-up it sometimes reminds me of the struggle, or relief, or pain, or sheer and utter frustration, or whatever emotion was marking the moment of the day (or the hour or the minute)...

And there was always a delicate balance between songs that would push me out of that "pit of despair" and songs that would drag me back into it...

Treat yourself gently, honor the pain and play whatever the hell you feel like playing to get through it!

Death Metal is always good ;)

Yep... that one was GREAT for me.
Also... Take Another Little Piece of My Heart

Singing loudly and crying when brokenhearted is healing for me.

When I was angry, it was The Veronica's "Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were)"

When I needed to cry my eyes out, it was Sarah McLachlan "Fallen"

When I wanted to sink into a hole and be a hermit for the rest of my life, it was Dido "Life For Rent"

When I needed a pick me up, normally with some alcohol included, it was Nina Simone "Love Me or Leave Me"

When I needed a feel good song, Santana always does it right.. In this case, "Love of My Life" and one of my all-time favorite songs from the first time I heard it 10 years ago

espressolover83 02-11-2013 12:55 AM

Definitely Adele's Someone Like You, and Rihanna's Take a Bow

mustangjeano 02-11-2013 12:59 AM

Well it didn't get me thru the breakup but it always reminds me of the predominant feeling at the time.... "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Rait

I'm so musically inclined that I relate most events, good and/or bad to some song somewhere. Breakups are certainly no different but I think each breakup has it's own sound, for lack of a better word, and so each breakup gets it's own song for the most part. Some that come to mind are:

REO's Speedwagon, Time For Me To Fly

Whitesnake's, Here I Go Again

Melissa Etheridge's, Like The Way I Do

The Indigo Girls, Least Complicated

Beth Hart's, LA Song

The thing about music though [and I just proved this to myself yet once more by listening to each of these songs complete] is with only one or two notes, you are instantly right back there where you were when you were going through whatever it was you were going through and listening or healing to, those songs. And while the feelings are no longer intense or even really emotional perse, they do tug at your heartrstrings and take you to a place that's a little uncomfortable. This is a really interesting thread to read though. We are so fragile yet so resilient aren't we?

I want to break free by Queen really did get me through a recent breakup... I really love that song. :)

Depends on the day, but these two are a good start:

Girl_On_Fire 02-16-2013 11:04 PM

  • "Beautiful Disaster" - Kelly Clarkson
  • "Impossible" - Shontelle
  • "Rolling in the Deep" - Adele
  • "Tear in Your Hand" - Tori Amos
  • "Blow Me...One Last Kiss" - Pink

There are so many more but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

TheMerryFairy 02-17-2013 02:31 AM

While it hasn't been my OWN situation Carrie underwood's "before he cheats" comes to mind.

Also, while this is quite offbeat, I like "Goodbye earl" by the dixie chicks. I don't know if you would consider it a breakup song given the content but for some reason it felt fitting.

Alicia Keys

This time was Alicia Keys:

'When it's all over"
and
"Brand new me"

these are some of the songs that have saved my life..and carried me through heartbreak..even now..if it wasn't for music i would be lost

When my domestic partnership broke up, the song I most listened to was "What Hurts the Most" by Rascal Flatts. Listening to songs like that is my version of a controlled burn....find the most depressing, mopey, "I've broken up and my life is over" song I can find, listen to it for a few days, have a good cry....and then I'm done.

I usually re-work lyrics to certain songs, to fit the occasion, because 'love' is sometimes not everything it's cracked up to be. For example, the disco hit by John Paul Young? Instead of singing "love is in the air, everywhere you look around"? I'll switch it up and sing it another way: "love wasn't found, anywhere around" because that's how it goes sometimes, yanno?

Sometimes, it's the best thing that could happen to me (invoking Gladys Knight, now, lol :| ) because who wants to stay in a relationship that isn't working well? (not me, ain't got time for that sh*t).

It's been quite a while since I nursed a broken heart, so the songs I might post about those times are a bit dated. Anyway, here goes:

It's been a long time since I've broken up with/been dumped by someone too, but that dosen't mean I can't appreciate a good breakup song when I hear one. Some of the newer ones are pretty good too.
