OH. MY. GODDESS.
http://dresdencodak.tumblr.com/post/...eo-game-tropes I can only post the blurb at the end, because most of the link's content is in the form of pictures, but quoting Dresden Codak author Aaron Diaz: "Inspired by Anita Sarkeesian’s Video Game Tropes vs Women, I wanted to pitch a Zelda game where Zelda herself was the hero, rescuing a Prince Link. "Clockwork Empire is set 2,000 years after Twilight Princess, and is not a reboot, but simply another iteration in the Zelda franchise. It just so happens that in this case, Zelda is the protagonist. I’m a very big Zelda fan, and worked hard to draw from key elements in the continuity and mythos. "This concept work is meant to show that Zelda as a game protagonist can be both compelling and true to the franchise, while bringing new and dynamic game elements that go farther than being a simple gender swap." |

That is pretty awesome! Did you see the Ted talk from the woman trying to wake the gaming community up to its misogyny? |

Harry Potter stars: Where are they now?
Well, as it turns out, the actor who plays Ron Weasley bought himself an ice cream truck and goes around giving away ice cream to kids for free.
This is the kind of thing rich geeks do with their money :) https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...27568690_n.jpg |

Animals in the wild have to continually contend with the expansion of human civilization. Certain wild animals have learned to coexist and even thrive in urban settings, pigeons and raccoons being obvious examples. Well, subway goers in Moscow are becoming familiar with stray dogs. These dogs have become accustomed to using the subway system as a means to travel across Moscow, even managing to catch a nap along the way. The dogs hop on in the morning and travel to the city center where they spend the day begging for scraps. At the end of the day they get back on the subway and travel to the suburbs where they sleep in relative safety. The dogs have become experts at judging the length of time they need to stay on the train, and seem to work together to ensure that they exit the subway at the right stop. Scientists believe this phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, and Russia’s new capitalists moved industrial complexes from the city center to the suburbs. Dr Andrei Poiarkov, of the Moscow Ecology and Evolution Institute, said: “These complexes were used by homeless dogs as shelters, so the dogs had to move together with their houses. Because the best scavenging for food is in the city center, the dogs had to learn how to travel on the subway – to get to the center in the morning, then back home in the evening, just like people.” |

...So my GM is going to run a RuneQuest game set in Pavis during the Second Age, for which the other two players are playing a bard who follows Nandan/Ernalda and a blacksmith who follows Gustbran the Bonesmith. I will probably be playing a young warrior who follows Vinga, after going apostate from the very patriarchal faith she was raised in to join the Storm Tribe.
If there is anyone here to whom that was not complete and utter gibberish, please tell me. |

I'm unreasonably excited about this:
Not just because it is Star Trek, but also because he is in it: http://i50.tinypic.com/2zno9a8.jpg I just realized that he is also in The Hobbit movies, as the Necromancer. I didn't even notice this (I'll just have to watch the first one five more times :|). I was already totally jazzed that his co-star on Sherlock, Martin Freeman, played Bilbo. Then there is Richard Armitage...well...I cannot begin to explain how fun it was to discover that I get to watch multiple movies with him as Thorin...:) |

Canada unveils its sweet new space-themed $5 bill in space
With the help of Commander Chris Hadfield aboard the ISS, the Bank of Canada yesterday launched its new robot- and astronaut-themed five dollar bill. The new polymer $5 bill shows the Canadarm2 and Dextre manipulator robots, along with an ambiguous astronaut meant to symbolize all Canadians who have contributed to its space program. http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18mb...g/k-bigpic.png |

As someone who has never had:
1. An action figure 2. A Bobble head 3. Anything Star Trek (though I have coveted) 4. Any TV memorabilia I may have to indulge, these could take care of all of the above all at once. In the name of efficiency. :cheesy: |
The husband got me a sheldon cooper bobblehead for my b-day last nov. Its so cool! And he also got me a soft kitty warm kitty tee. I loved the tee so much that I sent one to my sister for xmas. I am so going to take a photo us of wearing them together! And our husband can wear their maltese falcon tees in the photo also. Cause ya know, its hip to be a nerd!

A lecture-series closing speech that has been referred to as a sermon, of all things, and I can see it: NDT on scientific literacy (a concept I love): NDT on coming to your senses, about the five human senses, artificial senses, and that "common sense" thing: NDT on religion in schools (kind of a hot-button issue with "Intelligent Design" and all that): NDT being awesome on Bill Maher: There's a lot more out there. I just snagged some highlights. |
Pardon the double-post, but I just finished the new Tomb Raider game last night/this morning, and it was pretty great. I didn't play any of the previous installments, but this one actually looked like it was worth playing, and I was definitely not disappointed--it was pretty badass and like playing an action movie (albeit with slower-paced exploration and puzzle segments interspersed with the many high-tension fight and escape sequences, but it works). Lara just keeps getting progressively more fucked up over the course of the game and keeps on truckin' like this is Die Hard or some shit and I loved it. And you know how you get this feeling when a game is nearing the ending, with the buildup of tension leading to the climax and all that? The bulk of the game was like that.
Also, there was an observation Lara made early in the game which I found particularly apt, in response to Dr. Whitman saying of a powerful ancient queen that some said she had shamanistic or elemental power, not just political: "A woman wields that much power and sooner or later it gets called witchcraft." |
