I still very much miss the writings of Celestine Sibley and Lewis Grizzard. It isn't all small-minded prejudice and there are still people who are kind, considerate and caring that will invite you to "come sit a spell" on the porch and offer a glass of sweet tea. LoL! I remember I went to San Fran a few years back and asked the waitress if they had sweet tea and she looked at me and said, "You mean, like, tea... with sugar already in it?" I guess we still do take some getting used to. But I know if I head east an hour and a half away from downtown I can go to visit my parents and stop at Miss Lilly's (84 years old that "Miss" is) and pick up some fresh eggs...if she isn't there just leave your money in the coffee can on the stoop, pass the older ladies at the "coffee club" who meet every Weds. to work on a hand stitched quilt to raffle off for the volunteer fire dept., wave to Billy who took a run-down old gymnasium and turned it into a local skate rink on Fri. and Sat. nights to give the kids (regardless of religion/race/etc.) something to do on the weekends. If it's a holiday the local boys will have smoked a hog for 24 hours and be getting ready to put out the "comin' get it" sign. If BBQ isn't your thing then the Volunteer Fire Dept. is grilling 200 chickens on the open pit (next to that skating rink I mentioned earlier). Oh, and if a bird dog wanders by...no matter whose dog it is,,,odds are he really is named "bleu".
Prejudice...sadly it's everywhere in the world and the south is not immune. Most I think based on fear, some on just flat out not knowing any better. I brought one of my good friends home over the 4th of July. She happens to be Nigerian. The well-meaning Miss Lilly asked her "What tribe are you from?" I wanted to DIE ON THE SPOT! But it wasn't said with any nasty kind of malice. Miss Lilly is 84, has never left the state much less gotten on an airplane. Lucky me my friend just laughed and explained a little about the village where she was from. Miss Lilly was enthralled and gave her a jar of bread and butter pickles to "take home to her mamma" as we hugged goodbye. Being an out gay femme has brought on some interesting conversations to be sure. Do some people give me a tight smile and walk on? Sure. But that still happens in downtown Atlanta too. Usually it's one of the well-meaning older ladies who wants to know if I'm "sure I'm gay, because sweetie you just don't look it." LoL! but we keep talking and I answer as best I can depending on the nature and motivation behind the question.

Kindness and understanding trumping ignorance....one step closer...then another. I think that's the only way...

Katniss (it's midnight...and going for a walk to see if the lightening bugs are out after the storm)

p.s. and you and anyone else are always welcome on the Georgia thread....at least that's my two cents worth. "Peace ya'll"

Tawse 08-09-2012 05:16 AM

I didn't say the south was all bad! I just know from previous experience people who think of the stereotypical south are typically (haha!) surprised when they come to Atlanta... it's not what they expect or what they see on TV. Which is not surprising since most things aren't like what you see on tv.

And my experience with the small town you're describing - has been unless you're "one of them" - you are *one of THEM*... especially when butch.

But the great thing is - everyone can have a different experience and it can still be the same place.

I won't deny that part at all which is why every butch needs a strong sassy femme who will take their arm, meet the disapproving gaze of other people, *lock* that look with pride and wield her lipstick like a lethal weapon.

(my opinion anyway)

Katniss

p.s.....and occasionally drive the get-away car.

LOL last time I deliberately went to a small southern rural town more than 1.5 hours outside of atlanta... I was with a butch partner :) lol So that femme wielding thing wouldn't have worked. lol

Well it looks like you have the fast get-away car at least!

Hope everyone is having a great day! I am...the painters *finally* decided to show up after about 3 previous failed promises to do so. (probably yankees...ha ha ha ha...sorry Tawse, couldn't resist!)

LOL I'll have you know I'm born and raised in the Metro area! I am not a transplant!

Tawse 08-10-2012 04:58 AM

Happy Friday Katniss, JD, Clay, Tony, and Diamond... and if I forgot anyone.. I'm very sorry but I've only had my first 1/4 of coffee... lol

Katniss - why didn't you fire the painters who didn't show up 3 times in a row??? lol that was bugging me yesterday but I kept forgetting to go back and answer. lol

This weekend - final preps before heading out of town. I need to get down to brushstrokes (is it still there? lol) to get some kind of gay static sticker since mine was uhhhh well it had an accident while the car was getting a bath lol and i refuse to drive through the country without flaggin my colors.

Hmmm what else... I think that may be mostly it. I need to paint my mailbox. How exciting is that? lol

Actually, they did show up yesterday, worked for an hour and a half then it POURED buckets! But...blue skies this morning and they are already at it.
Why didn't I cut them loose the 2nd no-show? Because inside I am really a marshmellow...

Hope everyone has an awesome day and is looking forward to the weekend!

p.s....and fly those colors Tawse!

ITP here.... though really, a better label for me might be NLD (never leaves Decatur).

Random bit: I used to call Decatur the land of the 3 Ds: Dykes, DINKS (Double Income, No Kids) and Dentures....except it seems the old folks are dying off or selling out, and the dykes and DINKS all have kids now. :|

Celestine Sibley...wow, haven't thought of her in ages!

Way back in my rock-and-roll band days (the Ellen James Society, for you long-time Atlantans), I used to thicken up my accent whenever we were touring through the Southeast and would fuel up at some scary truck stop in the middle of the night. The regulars/locals would visibly tense up when they saw this rag-tag band of dykes wander in with mohawks and nose-rings...and then visibly relax when I stepped up to the register and this drawwwwwwwl left my mouth. Southern accent as social protection...go figure.

Happy Friday, all. I'm at the tail end of my cold....good riddance! My weekend agenda includes a trip to the Apple store and a trip to Costco....after which I'll need to spend what's left of the weekend resting!

StrongButch 08-10-2012 07:53 AM

Georgia on my mind

Morning to all of you. Have a great weekend.

Katniss 08-10-2012 08:07 AM

Clay...hoping all goes well with the Dr. appt. and sending lots of light and energy your way!

Tony...thank you for the comments, that was very kind. Savannah is pretty (although to be fair I just adore Charleston). Cumberland Island is fabulous and with all sincerity the Okefenokee Swamp can be beautiful. All those gorgeous water lilies as far as the eye can see. Although right now it's hot and buggy and muggy! Might want to wait for cooler weather!

JD....too funny. I was posting the other day that I still have trouble pronouncing "siren." It comes out sounding like "sye-reeeen". I am sure when people hear it they deduct 20 i.q. points. LoL!
Don't get me started about the Apple store. I just two weeks ago upgraded to Snow Leopard (yes I am that much of a Luddite and Geek Squad makes a fortune off me!!)

StrongButch---Good morning right back attcha'!

LOL don't forget pronouncing Decatur as "Dick Hater" - that was always my favorite. I miss Decatur and yep when the market turns around and our dogs pass on - we're heading back to Decatur.

I don't have much of an accent until I get angry, frustrated, or otherwise distracted and then apparently it comes out. Beats me why that happens... maybe as I was growing up I heard people drawl more when emotional? :|

I can't wait to get back ITP so I can spend my time between Midtown, Decatur, and L5P again... I miss them. Even if Decatur and L5P have been... transformed / taken over. lol

KayCee 08-10-2012 09:09 AM

I spent over a half year vacation in GA a few years ago and loved it there. I love the Southern flair, the accent and enjoyed visiting Savannah and Tybee Island. There I had both, the Southern type living and the ocean/beach I miss so much. If I could I would love to live down South somewhere.

Katniss 08-10-2012 10:02 PM

Totally agree...

One of the nice things about Ga. is there are several beaches (Atlantic and Gulf) that you can get to in a day's drive as well as go up in the mountains which I also love to do.
Ok....my last "yankee" story...(and really, I love everyone but some things are just too funny...)...a friend came down from NYC and we went up to Asheville area and into the mtns. We were driving back down the mtn. near dusk and a mother bear and her three cubs started to cross the road a few feet in front of us. My friend from NYC IMMEDIATELY hit the "lock" button on the car doors. I guess she thought we were about to get jacked...I almost wet myself laughing at the look on her face. Ha ha ha ha!!

Katniss....(still laughing years later)

Good morning!!

Good morning Ga. Peaches and Peeps!

Hope everyone is having a great day! Was thrilled with the rain here last night. Just an fyi...fescue in the South isn't such a hot idea despite a fairly shady yard. *sigh*

On an up note...getting the fall bulb catalogs in the mail! I plant 350 tulip bulbs by the front walk every fall. (sadly tulips in Ga. are considered an annual)
Feel free to shout out any color combos you think are awesome....I'm in need of some inspiration. In years past have already done the pink/white, purple/pink, red/yellow, purple/red.

How about a team of red/black and a team of yellow/black.... you can plant them in a football formation and let 'em fight it out for the touchdown...

JD, who isn't nearly as into the UGA/Ga Tech football rivalry as this post might suggest

Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

Ok....I'm not a huge football fan but I am enough of a weirdo to REALLY like this idea!! Colorblends catalog sells black tulips too...hmmm.....but I would want a little mini-goalpost! (my neighbors would die!!!)

Good morning Gawh-gah....

Hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend so far!

If anyone feels particularly bored and energetic I have a lawn mower with your name on it. (cough cough)...just sayin'....

Katniss...(seriously thinking about trade-in for a loft/condo, and yes the grass really IS greener in my neighbor's yard))

Katniss 08-21-2012 07:01 PM

Hellloooo?????

Anybody home? What happened to you people? Sheesh...mention a little yard work and we are back to crickets and lightening bugs. It's safe to come out now. The grass was cut (and so was an errant frisbee... but that's another matter all together).

Hope everyone is having a great week! :lawnmower:

Ohhh,Miss Katniss, I am here laughin at your post and laughin at myself. Heck, if i lived in Georgia, i would come over to cut your grass just so i could meet you. Oh, pitiful fool. Honest, i am so damn tired right now i didn't want to log on. But, i saw that georgia and your name and i read your post about the lawn and i couldn't resist. I do miss cuting the grass where i lived before.
Too bad that i live far away. That is the only reason why i offered cause i knew i couldn't do it...That is just the kinda guy i am. Wink wink.
Glad you got your grass cut.

Why I do declare....there seems to be a veritable outbreak of your "kinda guy".....although to be honest, I'm not sure if I were you I would admit the above. Word gets around and with your self-proclaimed lack of follow-through...well, my oh my...you just might be in for a bit of a drought in the dating department.

Well now, drought is most certainly in order. I must say that is definately true for me. I am doing myself and the women in the world a favor by proclaiming myself to be the half-measures kinda guy.
All i would have been able to do, or allow myself to do, was cut the grass and leave. I do have a load of responsiblities right now that i couldn't have imagined. They may be permanent and i may be a permanent no dating type.

Flouncing among the Fresh cut grass. That is a nice image.
And the picture...
is it jesus or the mona lisa?

Good Morning Ga. Peaches and Peeps!

Hope everyone had an awesome weekend! A bit cooler in the mornings...yay, yay!!!
But...just heard the PeachPass/HOV lane was charging $5.65 to go two exits worth of road...less than 10 miles. Good grief! I don't want to get to work that badly!

Have a good one and hope wherever you are traffic does not suc.

A little Ga. survey...

Out of curiosity......

1. Raise your hand if you already knew Georgia has a "Super Speeder" Law?

2. Bonus points if you know how many miles over the speed limit that entails.

3. Super-bonus points if you have any idea how much will be added to the "base" ticket price?

4. Triple-super bonus points with helping of warm peach pie a'la mode if you have any suggestions on how my "Like a Good Neighbor" insurance company is going to handle a certain little bit of info.

*raises hand* It was kind of hard not to know about it, with the constant radio and tv spots about it 2 or 3 years ago, and even the interstate traffic alert marquees still broadcast reminders. New to Georgia, maybe?

I don't know the speeds, though- something like 15 or 20 mph over the posted speed limit? I've been lucky enough not to find out. So give us details! How much is the fine? If it's any consolation, the money collected from fines is supposed to go to trauma centers to take care of people injured in car wrecks :|

Here is some strangeness from my week:

My neighborhood has an email list that posts all manner of questions and concerns, from "when is recycling day?" to "was that a gunshot I just heard?" Anyway, three days ago, someone sent out a post titled "Stop chasing the white rabbit!!" I thought maybe it was a "don't do drugs" message or something, but no, it was a literal demand. It turns out that the guy who owns the house next door was ticked off that on two separate occasions, two different women came in his yard to try to catch a white rabbit, and he didn't want them on his lawn (he didn't seem to care about the rabbit, he just didn't want any unannounced neighbors on his lawn).

I started off reading this email thinking the title is about drugs, then I'm thinking the guy who wrote it must be on drugs, because the whole thing is just so bizarre....I mean, two different neighbors chasing a white rabbit on two different days, but the SAME lawn?? Oh, and did I mention the house is right NEXT to mine??

So yesterday, it was about 7 AM, I was pulling out on my street to go to work- I drove past my neighbor's house, and guess what I saw right smack in the middle of the front lawn? Yep, a fricking white rabbit, bold as a bolshevik, just sitting there. WTF???

Oh, and I saw it again this morning. Same lawn, but this time it was in motion. I feel like I'm on drugs.

I REALLY want to know what the deal is with this rabbit. Is it a pet rabbit so well trained that it stays in its own yard? Is it an escaped pet surviving on cat food? Is it a wild rabbit with a really unfortunate choice in fur color? So. Fucking. Weird.

All I can say with certainty is that I'm not going on my neighbor's lawn to catch it. :|

Ok...that is hilarious! I can see that on a "just say no" tee shirt! Ha ha ha!
I would hazard a guess (??) that maybe it is a pet rabbit that escaped or was even let go? I volunteer at a no-kill shelter and won't depress you with all the animals brought in when people lose their homes, etc. I do hate to think of the poor little thing come winter. I doubt it has much of a chance. But maybe it is the Easter Bunny out of season so very savvy? A little surprised a hawk, etc. hasn't made a meal of it. Please keep us posted on the bunny chronicles. Hope it ends well.

Muggy and Buggy....phlech!

Good morning!

So....the weather report for today is 91 degrees and "muggy." Lovely (not).

There seem to be 9 bazillion (<--yes, that's a real number) mosquitoes in my yard. (super not lovely)

Hope everyone has a great weekend! If you are doing something fun please post so the rest of us can either live vicariously or just flat out be jealous!

A case of West Nile virus was reported in Avondale Estates, less than a mile from me. Yikes!

A few weeks ago, I realized the mosquitos really seemed worse than usual, and we've been getting just enough rain to create sources of standing water...so I went around my yard looking for them. I found that an overturned garbage can lid, flowerpot dish, and the ash-catcher on the bottom of the Weber grill all had standing water that was alive with movement from mosquito larvae...ugh.

I'm sure it's time to do a standing water check again.

So...here is the White Rabbit update I'm sure you've all been waiting for (or at least Katniss has!): There is no update. I haven't seen the rabbit again, but I haven't left for work at the crack of dawn since then either. I did talk to the neighborhood Harmless Crazy Lady last week, who made sure I knew that *she* was not one of the rabbit chasing trespassers mentioned in the Stop Chasing the White Rabbit Post...lol. She knows all of the neighborhood stories and gossip, and confirms it probably started out as a pet (it's far too comfortable around people, though not enough to let itself get caught)...but nobody knows who it belongs to.

Maybe I'll set up my humane small animal trap close to my neighbor's yard...but what the heck do I do with it if I catch it???

I've spent the weekend in Baltimore... flying back to Atlanta today. May end up going to work this weekend to catch up on the last week... even though I've been here for a work trip. Go figure.

Georgia On My Mind

Hello. I just wanna say fried pickles rawk!

Kast 09-07-2012 04:08 PM

I get home sick sometimes. (Mosquitoes, grass cutting, muggy weather, bunnies,:eatinghersheybar: oh yeah, I remember all that now - nevermind (lol) and, I remember praying for fall... hehe) I hope all the Ga peeps are doing ok? Really though - Georgia can never really leave your mind no matter where you land once you get a good taste of it.

Hope everyone is having a great week! :lawnmower:

Hi Duchess! Ok, Bkis, you're holding out on us - where's the party?

A few things... #1 sorry I've been away but Canada was awesome :)

Now... Super Speeder Laws in Ga:

How much higher? The new law titled HB160 tacks-on another two-hundred-dollar state-fee for any driver convicted of speeding at 75-or-more on any two-lane roads.. OR convicted of speeding at 85-and-over anywhere in Georgia. Those new state fees will be in addition to any local fines already in effect in the jurisdiction where the speeding offense occurs.

*this is why regardless of where I am in the country - I don't go over 83 unless I'm passing... and even then I do it quick.

Avondale Estates: OMG I went to Avondale High! (a long time ago, but still) that was my stomping grounds. Used to walk across the gold course every morning when it was still there.. then they got rid of it and I had to actually walk around the long way around to the school. Bastages.

... and with that I'm off to get ready to head to "Bonkers" up in Roswell - bunch of my friends are getting together for some "two drink minimum" time...
