Ravelry.com is a worldwide knitting/crocheting/spinning website. It is awesome and free. There are tons of patterns, groups, contests in groups, you have project pages, a library for your patterns, a place to "stash" your yarns to keep track of them, you can make friends, people are generally nice, there are groups for everything and everyone. I love it!

amiyesiam 10-03-2012 10:23 AM

I put "crochet" in pattern search and it came back with: 89,894 matches.

always2late 11-11-2012 11:46 PM

I taught myself to knit several years ago, and I really enjoy it. I decided to teach myself how to crochet because I found some really cute patterns for crocheting animals. I'm having some trouble though, with crocheting the adjustable ring. I've started working on a scarf, just a basic stitch, to give myself some practice and develop a familiarity with the hook and the basic stitches. Has anyone else here had trouble mastering the adjustable ring?

ScandalAndy 11-12-2012 06:59 AM

I'm not a crocheter, but i did find this. Let me know if it helps, and good luck with that!

Good to know!

I taught myself to crochet last winter, aided exclusively by You Tube videos. Now I can read patterns without visual aids, although I admit that I keep it pretty simple, so far. If I ever want to try something new, there is always a video for it. But it might be nice to have people with whom to share ideas, ask questions, and find inspiration.

I was on a piglet-kick for a while. I was thinking that the next one should have wings.

Ok this is really cute!

princessbelle 11-20-2012 05:53 PM

Dee, dont mean to be following you around LOL. I bought some "beginner" knitting things today and i'm going to try my hand at it.

I've been reading in this thread awhile and you all are so very talented. You are all very amazing.

I have zero crafting talent in my bones. BUT, i wanted to start doing something. So i'm gonna try and knit a scarf for Bully.

I got a "kit" that has needles and some other things i have no clue what they are and a book and CD.

I got two bundles of yarn.

So far that's all i know. I'm getting ready to get into it tonight though. I'm so excited!!!!

Thanks for this thread and all that post here. You give someone like me real hope.

Yay for you! A knitting virgin? Well i can tell you that i tried once to knit something, and i wanted to stab myself in the forehead with the needle by the time i was done.

So i crochet, big easy blankets and scarfs.

THEN my friend came over and showed me how to knit! WOW it's much easier for me with someone showing me.

IMO there is something special about something someone made, like someone once said to me, *it's part of your life*

and when i make something for someone i put much energy and thought into it for them, so when they use it they get all of that good juju along with it.

Corny eh?

Yes!!! That is why i wanted to try. My family is full of artist. My mom paints. My brother was a real artist, i think you've seen his work on fb. I have cousins in symphonies scattered all over the US. Music teachers. Art teachers....on and on.

And then...there is me. lol. I've tried so many crafts. I can make jewelry but it's just not that fun to me. I have enough beads in my closet to make a necklace long enough to stretch to where you live.

Anyway, point is, i DO want something that is from my hands that i can pass on to someone. A part of my life, my love and my work. Corny, maybe. But i want it and i want it bad.

I'm sitting here trying to go by this book and the first stitch to learn is the casting stitch. I look at the pic and i'm not sure if i'm doing it right or not. That is what is so frustrating. What if i'm practicing it wrong?

I'm not to the point of poking my eyes out with the needle yet, but i have sat on them twice now.

amiyesiam 11-20-2012 08:43 PM

Yes Youtube, that is how I learned to knit, purl, every stitch, how to cast off, cast on, everything!

Bit 11-20-2012 09:59 PM

I learned to tat from youtube. It was fun, but oh my, I sure did replay parts of the videos over and over and over trying to figure everything out, lol! The nice thing was that no one got irritated at me for asking them to show me so many times in a row. :cheesy:

Hi~ lovely lady!

girl_dee 11-21-2012 07:36 AM

You tube has helped me with lots of stuff!

i think Belle got lost in Youtube and never came back.

Maybe she stabbed herself in the forehead with a knitting needle.

Maybe she stayed up all night and got it done! :knit:

Maybe she's strangling poor Bully with what is supposed to be a scarf :bolt:

i hope she comes back, with photos! :knitgirl:

Okiebug61 11-21-2012 09:17 AM

I'll admit it. I am an avid crochet freak. My grandmother taught me when I was 9 and I have never given it up. I am crocheting a blanket for Red as we speak. I use to love to work with the fine threads and make table runners and such but my eyes are to bad to see that well anymore.

Ginger 11-21-2012 09:38 AM

I went through a knitting phase and I've gone upstate for the Sheep & Wool Festival at the Rhinebeck Fairgrounds too many times to count.

You see people knitting on the subway all the time, in winter. I feel calmer, watching them. It's like the fish tank in the doctor's office.

My grandmother crocheted and so did my sister who passed away. I don't know what happened to the bodark crochet needle my grandfather made. I think my mom has it.

Next reunion, there should be a crafts share!

ScandalAndy 11-21-2012 10:07 AM

I want to learn to do picot edge but i think i'm going to have to get lost on youtube for a while too! I've been considering getting a group of friends together on weekends to make soup and craft during the cold months. I think it's time to start planning that!

I knit on teh Subway and teh Buses, all the time ...
I really liked a saying I saw on a t shirt somewhere.. Be happy I knit, it keeps me from killing you :) ..I may have paraphrased quite a bit..But its true, knitting calms me.... a good thing in the midst of rush hour transportation

MsMerrick 11-22-2012 01:15 PM

I learned to knit, a combination of the book, "stitch n bitch".. Highly highly recommend and Youtubes and knitting circles ! People tend to teach ;) If you are in NYC or near..join the Dyke Knitting Club, once a month o r a Knitting circle at SAGE , once a week.. :) or many others but I like a Queer flavor :)

homoe 11-22-2012 03:58 PM

Does that stand for Senior Action in a Gay Environment?

girl_dee 11-22-2012 09:15 PM

i am interested in making socks, but i want to crochet them. it's way out of my comfort zone but i like living on the edge like that.

Ms. Meander, I LOVE these little piggies!! Do you have the pattern for them? If I PM you my address could you make a copy for me and mail it? I'd love to give it a try!

princessbelle 11-22-2012 09:22 PM

I'm here!!!!

I found some great video's on youtube. Still figuring it all out. I found 3 different ways to just make a slip knot. Also about six on how to cast on and how to make the first knit stitches.

I have found the ones that are easiest for me and have been practicing!!! I make about 10 cast ones then 10 knit stitches then i look at it and laugh.

Spacing is off, some are loose, some are tight. But. I'm practicing.

I am gonna just keep doing these two things and get them down good, before i move on. Of course today being Thanksgiving i've had no time to practice and now i work the next three days.

But, I'll get there!!!!!!!!

girl_dee 11-22-2012 09:24 PM

i do not knit, so i am of no help.

BUT in crocheting, you do not want to work *tight* or you end up with an uneven piece, because eventually you have to loosen it up.

That should SO go in the overheard thread. :|

always2late 11-22-2012 09:24 PM

I am getting the hang of crocheting. As I posted earlier, I taught myself to knit several years ago, and I enjoy it VERY much! When I first started teaching myself to crochet, I gotta confess, I wasn't all that thrilled...I liked knitting better. But now, as I am getting more familiar with working the yarn and hook, and learning the stitches...I find I'm enjoying myself! I have a bunch of patterns for little animals and I can't wait to give them a try!

when knitting it doesn't matter if you are a loose knitter or a tight knitter.
Having said that:
you do have to be consistent
realize that if you make a sock, hat, sweater, or mittens that gauge matters and being a loose knitter or a tight knitter will throw your gauge off and your piece will be to small or to big.
on toys, shawls, scarfs, gauge doesn't matter.

gauge
all pattern either list gauge or tell you it doesn't matter.
If it matters:
it will say that you should do a gauge swatch. If it says that 20 stitches x 20 rows should equal a 4x4 swatch and you do it and your 20 stitches x 20 rows makes a 3x3 swatch then what you are knitting will be to small. If your 20 stitches x 20 rows is 5x5 then what you are knitting will be way to big.

when you are happy and relaxed you will probably knit looser and when you are tense and upset you will probably knit tighter.

you will find dozens of you tubes for every stitch there is
there are dozens of cast on's and cast off's
use the one listed in the pattern if they tell you something specific
do your favorite if they don't tell you which one to use.

My favorite is the long tail cast on

girl_dee 11-22-2012 09:52 PM

i love all this language of knitters!

Angeltoes 11-22-2012 09:53 PM

I can crochet a really long scarf and that's it...I use to know more, but I've forgotten. I have no idea how to knit. I plan on learning more, because I found that crocheting is a really good stress reliever and it's so nice to hand make make something beautiful for someone special.

girl_dee 11-22-2012 09:57 PM

This is my favorite passion.

Tunisian crochet.

It makes the most beautiful scarfs

The needle looks like a crochet needle with a stopper on the end..you actually cast on then *unload* to make a row.

The needle looks like this.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6197/...4e6d874b4c.jpg

And the scarfs look like this.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...20488571_n.jpg

and i learned how to do this type of work, on youtube!

Angeltoes 11-22-2012 10:41 PM

That looks so pretty girl_dee.

I LOVE the tunisian crochet!! And, since I love knitting, it seems like it might be the best of both worlds :). I think I need to learn it!
