The other night I bought a couple of bottles of Hoegaarden wit blanche - a wheat beer and not a garden of hoes with some funny blondes :seeingstars:
It was ok. Too sweet? Not sure how to describe the taste. I chose it quite randomly - felt like a change from the standard Tiger. |
I don't drink alcoholic beverages at all, but I have, in the distant past, drank an O'Doul's (non alcoholic beer).
It's been about 15 years or so since I've even had that, though, come to think of it. ~Theo~ :bouquet: |
I was watching True Blood and noticed that Alcide's father was drinking Schlitz. I am sure the point is that he is drinking an inexpensive brew. Honest go god, if you are going cheap, you could do worse. It tastes like beer for one thing, unlike Miller and Corona. Better than PBR and Bud. Eww, Bud. Anyway, just noticed that.
|
What was your first beer that wasn't swill?
Mine was Moosehead. I drank it for several years. It is fine. I would drink one now if offered one. I wouldn't go out and buy it. But it's not bad. Certainly better than the standard lagers out there. |

I would have to say my first beer that wasn't swill :-) was "Fosters". It was only available in a oil can as we called it. We thought we were cool at parties hanging out with this huge can of beer. It was also the first 6 point beer I ever had. Aw, the memories. |
My first swill free beer was a Molson Golden.
A friend of mine worked at a local grocery here and gave me a six pack. I drank it on the beach. |
My first non swill was either Moosehead or Heineken ... I can't recall ... It was a long time ago ...

Love seeing all the posts!

Love the write up, Grant. Wake up Dead sounds like something right up my alley. You and Martina do well with this. Thank you! Quote:

As an affected college student, I went through a Lowenbrau phase. Now I'm just a beer fag. Give me a Rolling Rock, Corona, maybe a Miller High Life (glass bottles only please, on all of them). I guess I'm really much more of a wine or tequila guy.

Blue Moon Belgian White
I am a Tequila drinker and I only drink it socially I enjoy 100% agave silver BUT this summer while at the residents pool a neighbor offer me a
Blue moon Belgian white and I have been drinking it all summer I recommend it. |
I don't think I've tried that Blue Moon. I don't like wits, so probably I haven't. But I looked it up, and some Beer Advocate folks say it's the best Blue Moon (and therefore Coors) has to offer. I am surprised. It's hard to make a wit that can compare to a lot of other styles. By nature they're not that flavorful. Anyway, I thought that was interesting.
It sure sounds like a good drink for a summer day in Texas. |
I am going to try to get to Lagunitas Brewing Co's taproom this weekend. It's in Petaluma, Ca. They have a couple of Imperial Stouts on tap right now. Funny that their tasters are more expensive than Russian River's. *frown*
|
I have not gotten to Lagunitis yet. But I arrived up here at this peaceful lovely summer vacation rental (only a few weeks yet, and only weekends for me cause I am working now) and found some Anchor Steam Beers I had left in the fridge.
For me they are like the everyday easy drinker -- affordable, good, not so complex you feel you have to sit down and write about it. Good stuff. Nice to arrive here and have a couple cold in the fridge. Now what to do for food. |
Tonight some of us are partaking in the Genesee Cream Ale from a can. I am trying to pin down the kind of beer i like to use for my beer can chicken and i wanted to try a cream ale and see what it was like.

I know what that is like...I hate when tantalizing decides to "try something new", with a dish I already find to be perfect! LOL You come to the table with your mouth watering expecting one thing and all of a sudden there is a new spice in it. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :crybaby: P.S. Welcome to the thread, Snow! |

Lagunitas Brewery was supposed to have bbq smoked oysters yesterday, and I was going to stop on the way up here, but traffic was beyond awful. I have never seen it like that.
I went out to my local taco place, which is good, and which had, lo and behold some Lagunitas "Little Sumpin Sumpin" in bottles. Damn. That's a flavorful beer. It was kind of like technicolor going on after the Anchor Steam, which is a good beer and was perhaps the better choice after a hot drive. Anyway, looking forward to tasting it and others on tap although if it's just as hot today I may forego the brewpub visit for a longer time at the river. More swimming or a brew pub. Hard decision. Looks like it's going to be a tough day. This is an American wheat. Not much wheat flavor. That's fine with me. Bitterness -- thank god -- because the rest of it is all fruit. BIG citrus hoppy flavors. HUGE. A lot of sweetness too, but it doesn't overwhelm. Still it's not a fast drinker for me. I have to say for all this flavor, I was never startled. Not punched in the face. Someone up in Petaluma knows how to make beer. I am looking forward to trying the stouts. |

The list....
SF Anchor Steam Beer
Guinness San Miguel Shiner Bock I have tried some Hefeweizens but don't remember which brands..but they were really great! |
I did get to Lagunitas. Some of the samples were crazy good. Too tired to say more now.
The Sumpin Sumpin Wild was my favorite. I should have written more about it all earlier instead of arguing on another thread and watching Burn Notice. Now I am too tired. Great beers though. Incredible. Any one of them would have been memorable. I had two samplers of four. So tried eight. I have the list and notes in my purse. Too lazy to get it, and my memory sucks. I know I tried these in addition to the Sumpin Sumpin Wild: IPA Imperial Stout Censored Undercover Shutdown -- a double IPA -- it was so good that I bought a coaster with the name on it. They have a big outside area and live music. I had an artichoke press sandwich, which was tasty. |
I went to a pub in the bay area today. If you curious about which one, PM me.
I tried these beers: Petrus Aged Pale -- this is another fermented beer. I have been loving these lately. It's got a sour lemony woody funky taste. Just yummy. Not as intense as the Russian River ones I tried, but this is a different style. It's called an Oud Bruin. I don't know that I have ever had one before. But it was good. Hazelnut Brown Nector -- brewed by Rogues Ales. Well-named. Nector of the gods. I was not expecting much for some reason and wow. Glorious. So good that I bought a pint. All the rest were tasters (and free!) Here's part of a review from Beer Advocate: "A far more muted approach than the nose...if that's possible. Hazelnuts are loaded but in no way aggressive. Definitely bready with a pull of caramel sweetness. Some cracker dryness. Nutty. I can't help but think of dark brown bread. Deft use of hazelnuts. Avoids becoming sweet." Zummer Zitra Top brewed by Mikkeller. Light but flavorful. Fruity but not sweet. Hops and a final bitter taste. Excellent beer. Yum. Before, During and After Christmas by Evil Twin. A double IPA. Hoppy goodness. Lots of citrus and pine. I enjoyed this. Old Rasputin Imperial Stout from North Coast Brewing. Never fails. Such a good stout. The two just so so selections were Obsidian Stout brewed in Oregon by Deschutes. Beer Advocate gives it very high marks, but I didn't think it tasted like much. And Allagash Dubbel. I can't remember it well, just that it wasn't at the level of the others. My friend tried the Double Dead Guy by Rogues Ales. He liked it, but I wasn't thrilled. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2471/...5e5c238536.jpg |
champagne of beer?
http://www.adclassix.com/images/62millerbeer.jpg
http://www.brewskilights.com/MillerBucket.jpg It is pretty smooth going down. Reminds me of a light beer but better? I don't know. I think I would prefer this to a light beer. What do you all think of the High Life? |
Since you asked
It's among the best of the worst. Thin, but not piss thin. Nice grainy flavors -- barely there but not bad. Compare it to the watery, stale light funk of Bud, and it's a winner. And, I agree. It's definitely better than lite beers.
There's really nothing wrong with it. There's just not that much right with it. Basically a beer for people who want to get drunk. |
