I don't know if any of you have ever been to Maker Faire or not, but it is pretty much literally CHRISTMAS FOR GEEKS!!!!

I have been going since the first one in 2006 since I live near where it started. If you are in the SF Bay Area it is this next weekend at the San Mateo fair grounds.

After the first year when it just exploded in popularity the city has figured out how to deal with it. Get there early, it is set up so that parking lots around town are on a shuttle loop and free buses run every few minutes to get you there. Totally worth any inconvenience.

If you are not local, they are now hosted in Kansas City, Chicago, New York, and now Rome. There are dozens of other independent locally hosted ones all over the world popping up too, here is a list.

Seriously, if you are even a fringe geek, get thee to a Maker Faire, it opens up so many things to learn; and GEEK is celebrated everywhere. You will be one of the cool people.

ETA: Don't miss an entire exhibit hall set up with the biggest Tesla Coils you have ever seen doing battle!

I hope it works, I cannot embed like youtube.

Moment of Geek!

Commander Chris Hadfield.

He has become quite the Internet sensation and has more followers than the Canadian PM. This is a piece by Rachel Maddow that summarizes it all.

Anyone see Into Darkness ?

MsM 05-20-2013 12:15 PM

We went this weekend and LOVED it! We both wanna see it again, and soon. I was a big fan of the first one and I can say I actually liked this better.

There are naysayers saying we are screwing up the canon with this series, but they are neglecting the entire alternate timeline bit. Whatever I say.. it was full of delicious action, witty lines, and Uhura was a bad. ass.

thedivahrrrself 05-20-2013 01:23 PM

Glad to hear it was good. I liked the first one, so I'll probably try to see this one in the theater.

:popcorn:I am looking forward to it as well. Glad you hear you loved it MsM. See, I hate a crowed theater, so I am going to have to wait a week or two and try to hit an early matinee. I'm such a spoiled brat-owski when it comes to stuff like that.

When I was at Maker Faire last weekend I met some folks setting up a shared membership lab; 'a hacker space for biotech', it sounds like fun (to me) and they have a sense of humour too!

It's called BioCurious.org and their tag line is "Experiment with friends!"

:cheesy:

I'm pickin' up what you're layin' down Miss Hollylane. ;)
Big picture, Pangaea existed 300M years ago and then began to slowly crack apart and break up 200M years ago.
Put in that perspective there has been minuscule change.
Just an ebbing and flowing, really.

thedivahrrrself 05-24-2013 11:57 AM

I called an engineer to set up an interview today and caught myself impersonating Yoda. "Good news I have," said I.

I guess for me, the observable and scary difference, between now and 200M years ago, is overpopulation, and the resulting irreversible damage to previously unpopulated and untouched areas. That just doesn't look like ebb and flow to me, and it doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon. The Earth seems to be changing much more rapidly now, then it did in the time of Pangaea...So, some of those images made me think about that...
