“Fuck that guy. He must be high... Who does that?” —Toni Collette speaking on Quinten Tarantino regarding some cruel things he said about another actor.
Love this quote and I think something similar errtime Trump comes to mind. |
“What’s worse than a lie? To tell the truth and no one believes you.”
— Attorney Ben Crump’s grandmother |
“Some believe that it is only great power that holds evil in check. But that is not what I have found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love,” — JRR Tolkien (in, The Hobbit, 1937).

“I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong,”— British Philosopher,Bertrand Russell.

“If a society permits one portion of its citizenry to be menaced or destroyed, then, very soon, no one in that society is safe. The forces thus released in the people can never be held in check, but run their devouring course, destroying the very foundations which it was imagined they would save.
But we are unbelievably ignorant concerning what goes on in our country--to say nothing of what goes on in the rest of the world--and appear to have become too timid to question what we are told. Our failure to trust one another deeply enough to be able to talk to one another has become so great that people with these questions in their hearts do not speak them; our opulence is so pervasive that people who are afraid to lose whatever they think they have persuade themselves of the truth of a lie, and help disseminate it; and God help the innocent here, that man or womn who simply wants to love, and be loved. Unless this would-be lover is able to replace his or her backbone with a steel rod, he or she is doomed. This is no place for love. I know that I am now expected to make a bow in the direction of those millions of unremarked, happy marriages all over America, but I am unable honestly to do so because I find nothing whatever in our moral and social climate--and I am now thinking particularly of the state of our children--to bear witness to their existence. I suspect that when we refer to these happy and so marvelously invisible people, we are simply being nostalgic concerning the happy, simple, God-fearing life which we imagine ourselves once to have lived. In any case, wherever love is found, it unfailingly makes itself felt in the individual, the personal authority of the individual. Judged by this standard, we are a loveless nation. The best that can be said is that some of us are struggling. And what we are struggling against is that death in the heart which leads not only to the shedding of blood, but which reduces human beings to corpses while they live.” ― James Baldwin, Nothing Personal |

I learned something today …
That I did not know about Arlington Cemetery, where veterans are buried: Civil War Confederate General, Robert E Lee, his sprawling property was converted into a cemetery for veterans of war over a tax dispute. (May 13th, 1864).

The Donkey. (G.K. Chesterton)
When fishes flew and forests walked and figs grew upon thorn, One moment when the moon was blood then surely I was born. With monsterous head an sickening cry and ears like arrent wings, The devil's walking parody of all four-footed things. The tattered outlaw of the earth of ancient crooked will, Starve, scorge, deride me, I keep my secret still. Fools, for I also had my hour, one far fierce hour and sweet, There was a shout about my ears, and palms before my feet. |

Interviewer: “So Frank, you have long hair. Does long hair make you a woman?
Frank: “You have a wooden leg. Does that make you a table?” |
From Lesléa Newman's new book of poetry.
Another Day Another Jew killed, another shul burned, another school scrawled with swastikas. What’s a Jew to do? Carry on as if nothing’s amiss? Or revisit the list she’s kept since childhood like every other Jew she knew: who would take her in? Nobody has offered to hide her and who can blame them? They weren’t raised by a father who sleepwalked while screaming in Yiddish, a mother who stashed little piles of money all over the house in case the Cossacks came, a grandmother who gnawed chicken bones for hours not one molecule of meat wasted, a neighbor who wore long sleeves all summer so noisy nosy kids wouldn’t see the numbers crawling up his arm. Her friends are good people with kind hearts. They pat her head and reassure her she’s being ridiculous. As though that will reassure her. As though Never Again was just a slogan, not an empty chair at the kitchen table, not a broken promise to a fading photograph, not a midnight prayer whispered on sleepless nights into God’s bent ear. The book is called "The Last Flame Last". The Last Flame Last is a suite of 18 poems that explore the events of October 7th and the surge of antisemitism that followed, and how these events affected and continue to affect the author, a second-generation Jewish poet living in the diaspora of the United States. |
The Loved Ones
The loved ones we call the dead Departed from us and for awhile Are absent. And then, as if called back By our love, they come near us again. They enter our dreams… We feel they have been near us When we have not thought of them They are simply here, simply waiting While we are distracted by our obligations. At last it comes to us: they live now In the permanent world. We are the absent ones. — Wendell Berry |
