Sailboats! One item will be crossed off my bucket list if I could Captain one of these beauties across a large body of water. For now though, I am content with what is under the body of water.

When visiting the Keys a few months ago, I saw a sailboat that was made mostly of mohogany, 120 ft long and a full time crew of 7. The price tag would have purchased a small country.

Fairytales much older than previously thought.

Fairy stories such as Beauty and the Beast and Rumpelstiltskin can be traced back thousands of years to prehistoric times, with one tale originating from the bronze age, academics have revealed.

Using techniques normally employed by biologists, they studied common links between 275 Indo-European fairy tales from around the world and found some have roots that are far older than previously known, and “long before the emergence of the literary record”.

While stories such as Beauty and the Beast and Rumplestiltskin were first written down in the 17th and 18th century, the researchers found they originated “significantly earlier”. “Both tales can be securely traced back to the emergence of the major western Indo-European subfamilies as distinct lineages between 2,500 and 6,000 years ago,” they write...

How it feels to be a poor mother without heat during a blizzard.

At the end of a row of abandoned homes in one of Washington’s poorest neighborhoods, it’s 7:30 a.m., and Chamika McLaughlin climbs out of bed. She dreads this time of day. It’s when she has to make a choice between two terrible options.

Does she stay cold? Or does she put her life at risk?

McLaughlin pulls on a blue hat, wraps a black sweater around her slight frame and pads into the kitchen. Hands tucked in her armpits, she shivers in the early-morning chill. School is canceled today, and her 12-year-old son, sleeping in one of the apartment’s two bedrooms, will soon awake. She has to get the house warmer. So, as she’s done countless times over two heatless winters in this apartment, she reaches for the oven dial.

McLaughlin, 30, knows heating her home this way could start a fire — oven blazes kill people every year. But she feels she didn’t have a choice. She’s marooned with defective radiators in one of the worst blizzards to hit the District in years. McLaughlin turns the oven to 400 degrees, pulls down its door and watches the coils inside glow red.

*A few years ago, while watching the teevee, a commercial from the local cable company advertising for the "Big Game," so effed up we can be sued for saying the Super Bowl, but I digress. SuperBowlSuperBowlSuperBowl! Hah!

Okay, back to the story. The commercial scene was 3 men inside with a charcoal grill, they were all bundled up being pretendbians and bad ass. But really? I called the cable company to have them reconsider this commercial and how I believed them to be irresponsible. Yes, some folks may think it is quite fine to start a charcoal grill indoors. What I heard back......*crickets.

Dog escapes yard to join a marathon, finishes 7th.

What started as a typical tough half-marathon ended as anything but when a bloodhound joined the race and snagged a seventh-place finish.

According to Runner's World, Ludivine the hound slipped away from her backyard the morning of Jan. 16 and found her way to the starting line of the Trackless Train Trek Half Marathon in the sleepy town of Elkmont, Alabama.

Romans cover their nudes for Iranian leader's visit.

The Romans have censored themselves to make visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani feel more comfortable during his historic stop in Italy.

Rouhani -- the first Iranian leader to visit Europe in almost 20 years -- met Tuesday with Pope Francis at the Vatican, but another stop on his agenda was the famed Capitoline Museum, where classic Italian nude sculptures were covered with plain white boards to avoid offending the Muslim president.

Italian news agency ANSA said the nudes were covered out of respect for Rouhani.

Nonetheless, the move wasn't going over well with many Italians on social media, some of whom lambasted it as "absurd," and "embarrassing, servile behaviour."

30 years later, remembering the Challenger crew

Thirty years after the space shuttle Challenger broke apart in the clear, cold sky high above Cape Canaveral, the commander's widow no longer feels anger at NASA and the management missteps and schedule pressure that kept the orbiters flying despite a fatal flaw in their solid-fuel boosters.

She tells CBS News she is at peace with history, her role in it, the heart-wrenching loss of her husband and his six crewmates and her connection with the countless people who will never forget America's loss of innocence on the high frontier.

"I am able now to treat the event as history rather than avoiding the public scrutiny that overcame us during our private grieving," said June Scobee Rodgers, whose husband, Francis "Dick" Scobee, commanded the 25th shuttle mission. "I'm envious when I look back at Dick Scobee's pictures, and he's so young, and I'm a great grandmother now!

"It's also interesting to hear the perspective from my children as adults when they talk about it," she said. "I still hear from people who can tell me exactly where they were and what they were doing, if they were old enough, at the time of the accident. And it's amazing to me. They want to share their story with me. It's as though they are sharing the experience of their own grief with me."

El Onizuka Christa McAuliffe Greg Jarvis Judy Resnik Mike Smith Dick Scobee Ron McNair

Recall with numbing clarity the moment this happened, I, as well as millions of others could not, would not believe what we were witnessing. The overwhelming grief was only assuaged with time. Christa McAuliffe was chosen over 10,000 other teachers to make this ground breaking journey into space. She left behind a son, daughter and husband as well as hundreds of students who adored her. SHE made a difference.

Barbie has a new body!

MATTEL RELEASES THREE NEW BODY SHAPES FOR THE WORLD’S BEST-SELLING DOLL. INSIDE THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN BARBIE’S 57-YEAR HISTORY–AND WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT AMERICAN BEAUTY IDEALS

I’m sitting in a bright pink room at Mattel’s headquarters in El Segundo, Calif., playing with a Barbie that only 20 people in the world know exists. Her creation has been kept so secret that the designers code-named the endeavor Project Dawn so that even their spouses wouldn’t be tipped off to her existence.

Like every girl who has ever played with the most popular toy in history, I yank her clothes off and try to put on a new dress. It’s a blue summery frock, cinched tightly at the waist with a black ribbon. I try to tug it over her head, but the waistline gets stuck at her shoulders, her blond mane peeking out from the neckline. “Try going feet first,” the lead designer suggests, and I do. No good. Her plump bottom gets stuck in the same spot. Yes, plump. Barbie’s got a new body. Three new bodies, actually: petite, tall and curvy, in Mattel’s exhaustively debated lexicon, and beginning Jan. 28 they will be sold alongside the original busty, thin-waisted form on Barbie.com. They’ll all be called Barbie, but it’s the curvy one—with meat on her thighs and a protruding tummy and behind—that marks the most startling change to the most infamous body in the world.

Going to College, Voting for Trump

http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/...zf7y950lma.gif

Best quote ever:

“In school we learned how America was great, you know, back in...back in awhile ago or whatever, and I kind of want to live through that as an 18-year-old.”

:superfunny:

Other choice quotes:

"Being an 18-year-old, being younger...uh, the fact that Donald Trump just doesn't care about the quote unquote political correctness."

“It probably wouldn’t be wise to have the leader of our country calling other leaders losers,” says one.

His friend disagrees, "But that just goes to show, like, how compe-...like...to me I like that because it shows how competitive he is and how...how determined he is to beat those people. He wants the best for our country."

"Ordinary citizens say stuff like that and I wouldn't say that any of us are sexist for using those terms or making those comments."
