Soft*Silver 10-14-2011 02:22 PM

hello folks. Its a beautiful calm damp day in NE Ohio. Sitting around in my PJs and having a slow Friday. I was wondering if anyone in our age group has some trick or treat stories to share with us? What it USE to be like, as opposed to now?

I remember my dad would take me and my brother and our friends Trick or Treating through out the neighboorhood. We'd get bummed when we knew someone was home but wouldn't answer the door. When we were done trick or treating, my brother and I would dump the candy out of our bags or plastic pumpkin and my dad would go through all the candy. After that my brother and I would look for candy that we didn't like and try to trade with the other for something we did like lol

Wryly 10-15-2011 04:41 PM

Softness - I remember all the walking! We lived out in the country and sometimes, when our dad took us out, he'd drive along the road and we'd have to walk up the laneway to the house. It seemed that people lived too far away from the roads!
I remember Allan's Hallowe'en candy. I hate it! I think it is a molassas salt-water taffy. It must have been very cheap because it seemed that everyone gave it out.
I remember plastic face masks and the light plastic costumes that ripped when you sat down.
I remember being so wired from all the sugar - man, I must have been bouncing off the walls! my poor mother!

Tonight I'm hanging out - not up to much - just surfing.

Hi everyone

Just got home from a chili bonfire thing..A guy at work and his Dad have it every year..It is a good time..Didnt go to get drunk just to eat..Saw a few retired guys and visited with the rest..

My Halloween story..
We lived in a small town and we would start going out when it got dark..We were on the other end of town so by the time we were on the farthest end of town everyone would pretty much be out of candy..It was dark and pretty much alone walking back home..Me and my brother would say things to get my 2 sisters scared and we would all start to run..Well of course someone would fall and cry and dump their bag of candy..The rest of us didnt want to help them pick it up so there was always a few hand fulls left on the sidewalk..When we got home we all looked at each others knees to see how bad they were scraped up..As i am writing this i am laughing because to this day i can still say something to my sisters to get them to run scared and my brother would back me up..Now i have their kids to help me out to..Good times..

Soft*Silver 10-15-2011 09:00 PM

I remember falling too when I was out trick or treating! Those plastic face masks made it so hard to see! Make up wasnt like it is nowadays. You used your momma's make up to paint lines and smudge stuff on you!

I remember the glitter on some of my costumes. I thought that was the prettiest site! I was always the witch! LOL. Even witches had glitter, especially on their capes!

Wryly, I lived in the country too but would go "into town" where my cousins lived and ToT with them. I was told never to tell anyone I didnt live there! I felt like I would go to jail if I told!

My most vivid ToT memory isnt of mine, but comes from when I took my little 4 or 5 year old daughter ToTing. She was the good witch from Oz, and was so delicate and sweet looking! I was walking her, with my HUGE collie/St Bernard (named Sister) with me. I would stand at the top of the driveway while Liz would go to the door. I was giving her a sense of independence (who am I kidding? She was demanding it!)

we got to one house and this older guy was sitting on his porch and he was calling to her "come here little girl, come see what I have in my pockets" and jiggled them with his hands in them> I WAS PISSED! I started following her, and didnt that man get up, grab a REAL pick axe and start to chase her! She ran screaming and I ran toward him...I shoved him and the dog started barking and someone grabbed us both and I was yelling at him, then trying to grab my daughter who was scared out of her wits! I admit I wanted to kill him! She was trembling, and I scooped her up and took her hom, about a block and a half away. I called the cops and made a report. Then, wouldnt you know it, the kid looks at me after the cops leave, and asks if we can go back out...lol

kids are so resilient....

yes, we did!

Julien 10-18-2011 06:51 PM

Hello All,
I've been away for a while and thought I would check in and see what's up. It is good to see so many here. So this is my coming back to the Planet and I thought I'd start here first.
Julien

clay 10-18-2011 06:57 PM

Working part time sucks in the pay department - - but so many days off is awesome.
Only 2 days this week - - but I was originally scheduled for only 1. So it works out - - sort of!
Now I'm off until next week - - a full 5 days of work! After that it is going to be lean times until Christmas. Hopefully the expected rain won't be that bad and I'll have some beautiful picture taking weather.

Halloween Memories vs Now

I remember when my brother and I would go out in our little neighborhood, I think I was about 5. We had these awesome HUGE masks of Indians. (they would probably be considered offensive now) but, we would always make a huge haul of candy, 3 or 4 grocery bags each. I was too shy to go to some houses so my brother came back, got my mask and my bag and went up to the house again so I could have that candy :), what a good brother.

Now that I have kids of my own, I am afraid to take them into neighborhoods where I don't know anyone, there is always someone trying to hurt kids with tainted candy or razers in apples. Now we have to look for a nursing home or the church trick or treat events. I think it is sad, would love for my kids to experience just running around and going from door to door, it was so much fun!

Thanks for asking the question softness :).

Rockinonahigh 10-18-2011 10:25 PM

I grew up in a multi national neighbor hood, everyone celebrated halloween the way they did in what ever country they were from, all of us kids got to see how much fun it was cause of the diffrences in treats we got as we went to each house. Many familys would be haveing partys that were on going as the kids came and went many staying for while to have some fun.Every parent knew every child in the neighbor hood..u can bet if one of us did sopmething we shouldnt have our parents knew before we got home. Most kids went in groups with an older sibling or some older folks to go with us,we always fely safe,to bad some jerk messed up a fun evening for soman who love the fun and games.

Hey all~
I thought I'd pop in and say hello. I'm over 40, so I guess it's safe to come in here. :)

cuddlyfemme 10-19-2011 05:35 AM

Good morning E/everyone! I hope Y/you all have a beautiful day. Its supposed to be chilly and damp here but its good weather to open the sliding glass door and get some fresh air inside....besides my cats like looking out of the sliding glass door and listening to the noises.
Wryly, I know what you mean about it being a lean Christmas...its going to be that way for me too.

Wryly 10-19-2011 02:50 PM

It is a rainy chilly day here.
Had a quick visit with my brother - - he is working on my house. Lots of work to be done now we just have to come up with the money!
Now at my SIL. Apparently we aren't going to be doing the work that I thought we were so it looks like a couple of lazy days for me, I hope!

cuddlyfemme - I hope things are going well for you, despite everything. I've been offered a couple more days work so that helps. But a lean Christmas is better than nothing at all. Things will get better.

raising2alone 10-19-2011 10:52 PM

Welcome

Hi Stacy,

Of course it is ok that you come in here :), welcome. I don't get to post often but I will certainly say hi when I am around!

Hey all.. just stopping by to enjoy the fine vintage of older folks. Have a good Tuesday evening and Wednesday. :wine:

Wryly 10-25-2011 10:08 PM

*stupid phone! I had a nice post but the my phone went wonky and lost it.*

I'm on the train - heading home after a good day at work. My job went smoothly, lots of joking around with co-workers. Plus I sat in on the training of the cutest little butch. I swear I just want to tuck him into my pocket and pet hys little brushcut whenever I'm feeling blue. I feel very protective of hym even though I'm sure hy can take care of hymself.

tomorrow is an earlier shift - - so I hope I can fall asleep without any problems tonight.

freckled1 10-26-2011 08:29 AM

Good morning. I now qualify to be here so thought I'd pop in to say hello. Hope everyone has a great day today!

I hear you about the lean Christmas folks. I work full time and part time and still don't make enough. Today we were told that there is a "problem" with the checks so we won't be getting paid on friday. meanwhile the new owner is mia in Texas... hmmmm Not looking too good. I am wanting to leave this job NOW! I've been very unhappy here for the last year and a half but this is getting rediculous. I just wish I had went to school for something other than early childhood ed. Now at 49, I am making less than some at the mall. REALLY? Going to try to go back to school and see if there is SOMETHING I am good at besides education. Meantime, I am exhausted from working my 2 jobs, dog sitting, babysitting, etc... just trying to make ends meet. The worst is watching my mother sell some of her jewelry, not getting her nails done anymore, etc. These were suppose to be her golden years. Now she may have to find a job...again... at 72. Makes me sad and I feel helpless. I know I'm not the only one, I am lucky to have any job at all..... but we are still not making it.

sigh.... I need :chocolate: and :wine:!

Up comeing Hollidays

About ten years ago I thought the world would always be a big shining place to be in,then the bottom fell out,I wont go into the long story of it but it was one hell of a drop.Because of this situation me and my son ended up near homeless,We did manage to find a cheep place to live, but it was a dump in the first order.Just to make it from day to day was a struggle, either he had a job or I did,it took me going back to school to finaly get a decent job.while I was going back to school he found a job with an Rv dealership that he still has today.Hollidays back then were so hard that I just nearly stoped even acknoedgeing them..it was just one more day to get thrue. For a long time its just been him and me..we get something for each other I send out christmass cards. Its now been five years since we managed to get to where we are now,I still have holliday blues..he thinks they are over rated( he may be right)
But I put up a fue christmass things on the mantle, the tree is 2 ceramic trees my mom and my aunt Jo made...I like to sit in the dark and watch the lights blink and remember the times whan they were hear,I learned that the hollidays are what u make of them no mater how much $$$ u may have.

Ya... already been down that road with university of pheonex and the local county college. Not a job to be had. Half of my problem is finding something I can do that has a market... so far.... nothing... a big giant goose egg!

good evening everyone!

on the train - homeward bound. a good shift at work today - a few things didn't go quite right but I'll chalk it up as a learning experience. a nice dinnertime convo with a co-worker. and a hilarious phone call with someone who has turned out to be a good friend. so nice to know someone has my back despite knowing all my faults! ;-)
dead tired but have a few things to do before I go to bed. same shift tomorrow - it is nice to get home early for a change.

clay 10-26-2011 08:04 PM

good evening all you gorgeous lofters! Hope everyone is having a great week. Weather here is still gorgeous...high 70's days and mid to high 60's nights...love, love, love it! Still wearing shorts and tees...my standard issue clothing...lol.....have a wonderful rest of the week..hugs to all...

Wryly 10-26-2011 08:12 PM

ruth and rocking -
I just read your posts (I'm surfing on my phone and your messages didn't appear until my last post went thru).
yeah - the last couple years have been tough. I am sorry to hear how it has been for you both. but I know they will get better eventually.
we just have to tough it out a little longer.

clay 10-26-2011 08:19 PM

hey Ruthie:
I hear you on the holidays...being lean..and all...this will be a truly lean one, for me..and this is the third year since my wife passed away..I don't even celebrate them....I still miss her...like it happened yesterday...BUT I know she wouldn't want me to grieve, but to forge ahead and enjoy life...still, it is so very hard. The ladies ,for the most part, seem to be so hardened, so jaded, and so broken, at this age that they are so afraid to love again...but I am ever positive and hopeful she does exist, and we will find one another when it is meant to be...meanwhile, I flirt, I play, and I believe....so....keep the faith..it isn't about what we can spend, it is about how we treat our fellow beings...peace on earth..peace in our heart..and love for one another..THAT is the spirit of the holidays...

Hello everyone..

Kinda a spooky story for Halloween..

First of the year i gutted my kitchen..Time for a new look..As i tore things up i was taking pictures on my progress and of course i took the "before" pic's..Well i got my very expensive throw away camera full so i took it into get the pictures developed..Couldnt wait to get to the car to look at them..As i was looking at them i noticed "Orbes" all over..Scared me and made me nervous to go home and not to mention when it got dark..I was afraid to close my eyes in the shower..I got myself real scared..Then i got to looking at them closer to try to find out when they started..It was when i tore the origional plaster off the ceilling..They literally fell out of the ceilling..They wernt there when i took the before pictures..One pic there were 12 of them floating around..Took a pic of my cat sitting on the ladder and there was one floating around her face..She didnt seem to be bothered by it..Then i got to thinking again that i kept loosing my pencil..I picked things up and put my stuff in piles out of the way and my pencil was right in there..The next day i get busy and needing my pencil hummmmm it is gone..I get a new one sharpen it and get busy and without looking for my lost pencil it showes up out of no where..Then i think why didnt i see it there..??..its because it wasnt there..Spooky Huh..Flashlights are the same way to..I buy the expensive ones to last forever..In about a month they are useless..I cannot keep a useable flashlight in this house..The batteries go dead in a matter of weeks..Maybe those "orbes" are sucking the power out of them..It is just spooky to me..

Anybody else on Spooky House stories..

s..

Hi Kel:
THANK YOU so very much..for your kind, inspiring words. I believe the same way.....SHE is out here, and we are working our paths to one another...perhaps I just met her, and am yet to know she is THE ONE! My deceased wife will put us in the right place, at the right time.....
I can't agree more with you on the people who met IRL at the Reunion after meeting online, emails, texts, calls, etc. I know of a couple or three of them..and their love & happiness just shows in the many pics online!!! I am a believer of fairy tales...of fate...of destiny....
I appreciate your friendship and enjoy seeing your work. I can't wait to meet you & DJ at the next Reunion..if there is any way possible, I am planning on going!!!
Have an awesome weekend...hugs to you both...Clay

It is a safe place...a cool place, and love abounds here...so pull up a nice bean bag chair..have some coffee, maybe a danish, and enjoy!!!! Clay

Hello All,
I have been away for some time and just found thread where I feel would be good to start again.
My weekend will be quiet. No clubbing for Halloween. I stop doing that while ago. I used to be fanatic to decorate my house, not anymore either. I will hang a wreath on my door and just give out candy.

I hope everyone is having great weekend.:) It’s cold over here, but sunny.

Vlasta
