Legand has it that Cole Porter and a friend were sitting in a cafe, and overheard two ladies at lunch - one of whose name was 'Otis'. They seemed to be discussing the absence of a mutual friend to a 'lunch' one of them was giving.
Porter's friend who was keenly listening to the 'ladies' conversation, challenged Porter to write a song about the 'ladies who lunch'. Cole Porter took his friend up on his bet, and came up with this! |
