I wonder what happens when people select a screen name with deep meaning to the one they love (this is not directed at you Intrigue) - And then they break up?!?

We have Linus to magically erase our tattoos - but what do other people do?

I try to go with my own identity. Breakups are bad enough without having to change my on line persona too.

A sagging screen name is never fabulous

Novelafemme 10-04-2011 12:34 PM

Originally, when on the dash site, I used a name my older sister has used off and on (landsoftly)...it's a combination of our last name and softly. Then I switched to novelafemme...novela after my then favorite red wine minus an L. most recently I switched to CatalinaRose because I didn't like the sad/hurtful reminders that came along with novela. Catalina Rios is a feminist poet who wrote The Three Tongues, which is one of my all time favorite poems. Catalina is also a character in a novel I am reading for my Chicana Theories class.

JazzGirl came into being through my Dad. He told me from the time I was
old enough to wave my hands as a baby, when jazz came on the radio or record player I danced in my seat or on my feet.

Random was my nickname in my twenties, because of my lighting train of though changes.... Lol.. Circular logic, linar logic... nope... Mine was A, B 7, %, Z... The result were the same as other people, just my process to get there was different....

I left the nickname behind and went back to my birth name when I left Atlanta... but used randomnumbers as my email.

I thought I left it behind... lol... I met and fell in love with a woman who hated my birthname... She called me Random....

Fast forward eight years later... we break up, I try to go back to my given name... (Hence the short lived Ms Cyn) but the problem is.. when I self talk, I name myself Random.. People call my Cyn or Cynthia, but I'm still Random..

Oo! That reminds me of a children's book about a cat. He's named Elemenopeo.

I think I'll use that if Tapu becomes too famous....

Greyson 10-04-2011 02:35 PM

I have been using this as a screen name for about six years now. I signed up at the dash site under my original screen name, U2. I started coming onto the internet in 98/99. I started over at gag.com under the screen name U2.

I stayed there about a year. During this time I was so naieve. I finally realized I was being stalked by an unstable woman in cyberland and one day I just decided to change my name. (Besides most thought my U2 screen name was about the band, and it was not.)

The name Greyson came to my mind. This was before the young man who sings became an internet sensation and I guess now somewhat of a celebrity. A few years before him. I like my screen name so much, I had it changed to my middle name legally and have started to use it outside of the internet a few years back.

P.S. The subject of internet duplicity is up on another thread. I have always been troubled how some use multiple names on the internet. "Same game, different name." I like the way Linus handles it here. It is in the open, transparent and we all know that so and so is now _________.

Greyson definately suits you perfectly. I remember you are the one that taught me years ago, to keep my same name as i went to each BFP site. I'm glad i did.

I'm not saying i don't think people should change their names as they evolve, move to different times in their lives, ect...just that it's nice to know who you once called yourself. And i agree with Greyson, it's nice to know who people were and who they are now. Linus does a great job keeping us up to date.

betenoire 10-04-2011 02:46 PM

my old screen name came from a job I had over 10 years ago. Me and a coworker used to refer to each other as Princess Pottymouth. We'd even draw pictures of each other wearing tiaras and saying horrible things. *shrug*

I picked betenoire as a way of stabbing at people who think I'm really mean and awful. It's more of a joke than a username. I think it's hysterical.

starryeyes 10-04-2011 02:47 PM

An ex always told me I had starry eyes, so that's why I picked it at the time.

nobelcarrot69 10-04-2011 06:08 PM

I doubt mine is very fancy. My last name is Noble and I work in the optics field, so like a carrot I'm good for the eyes and I was born in 69. nobelcarrot69. That's me.

BugsAndKisses 10-04-2011 06:26 PM

Mine is simple, I think bugs are just so darn cute I could kiss'em

However, there was a sort of disconnect when it came to identifying with society’s definition, as well as a sense of invisibility because I could never see myself reflected in other women. Then I found butch and that felt right. The masculine male thing was a bit of a struggle, because despite a real gender incongruence in my presentation in the eyes of others, I had never really felt like I was male. I looked it. At least there was always a good deal of gender confusion from the world in general regarding if I was male or female. But I never was confused. But I do find comfort in my masculinity, it fits like my old black t-shirt. But I am never comfortable with it. I hold it suspect and watch it like it was a cranky old dog prone to biting. In the spirit of this very tiresome way I have of looking at my masculinity I thought it would be great fun to give myself a feminine name this time around. Miss Tick is a very minor character in a couple of Terry Pratchett novels. I liked that it was a kind of oronym. So I decided to try it out.

I’m having such a hard time with it. When I see it beside my words I cringe. It’s beyond being uncomfortable with it. I pretty much hate it. But I’m going to keep it. At least until the fear and loathing of a too feminine name passes or it just gets too much to look at. I am pretty surprised at myself. I didn’t think it would be this hard. But it is. It's so hard that I sometimes feel detached from my own words once they are out there authored by this Miss Tick person. I wonder what that says about me. I think it needs a touch of masculine to make it more palatable. I keep telling myself that tick is kind of male. But really what the hell does that even mean? How can a word be male? I think I'm losing it. Maybe I should just give in and change it.

simple

a play on my first name and i was born in 66

Tcountry 10-05-2011 12:06 AM

Well T is my niickname, even my dad calls me it. It is shortened from my given name and also from "lefty" given when I started sports. My favorite coach shortened it to T and I have been T since.

The country part came from working summer camp at Easter Seals in 1999. Everyone knew me as T and when Fri night came around for our dance/karaoke I was the only one with country cd's... so named tcountry then, that got shortened to TC for the rest of the year. lol

Still fits well. I am good ole midwestern country at heart always.

Massive 10-05-2011 12:50 AM

A very good friend from way back when turned to me one night and said "Luvva, you're f*ckin' massive ..." (she's a good foot shorter than me and I'm 5'11'' barefoot) and Massive just stuck ...
Not that exciting really

J. Mason 10-05-2011 05:59 AM

It is the name I picked when I decided to transition, just something simple!

MaggieBluIze 10-05-2011 06:56 AM

Good Morning!!!

Where did my screen name come from ... Well ...
From all my lovely BFP friends on Facebook ...

Thanks so much for helping me create my name that I :heartbeat:!!

(I :heartbeat: that it sounds like I'm in the Mafia) :)

ruffryder 10-05-2011 11:03 AM

Back in the 90's just chose this name because I like the rapper DMX and the Ruffryders. There is also motorcycle groups with the name. Have used it since and at other social networking sites.
