I agree with wolfy here . You can use a bobber anywhere but the water needs to be some tame . They do make large ocean bobbers . Like wolfy said I keep my finger feeling the line .

Haahaa! I debated whether I even wanted to post in here. Y'all are going to think I have plumb lost my mind!! *Chuckles I have no idea the terms or the different types of fishing. I was taught one way by my father who is now 92 years old. I have never cast a line with a casting rod. His are all vintage rods with open wound reels. He always used the same type of hooks (nothing fake) and of course always worms. The catch? Small stream native trout. I am not referring to stocked trout. I am talking lands that are private that have native fish in them and reproduce each year. The bait? Worms that I get from overturning rocks and other objects since we always lived in the woods. Most of them were big ones too. Are they night crawlers? *Shrug Idk, but they are good bait. *Chuckles. My father and I would walk lightly by the stream and stand back far enough so the shadows did not cast onto the water and our step light enough to not cause vibrations. We would pull the hook taut and then let it fly into the water and stay very still and very quiet. Let me tell you learning that technique put quite a few hooks through my fingers. I swear my father had so much patience to put up with my slow learning. LOL! Anyways, we let the waters natural flow take the worm where it would go and then lightly pull it back under the edges near the side of the stream. The fish like to hide in those nooks and crannies of the water and they get tempted by the bait. Some days have always been better than others, but the fish that are caught are definitely hit over the head with a rock. I cannot stand to see them suffer and then they are cleaned as soon as we get home. They are either used immediately or froze. Mom used to always prepare them coated with flour and slowly fried. I honestly don't know what the largest trout was that we ever caught, but I do know state law was that if it weren't 6 inches it had to be released and that is the rule we went by. So....with that said...it has been quite a few years since I have fished. I did a few years back buy another more recent rod and tried it out once. I even bought some of those other fancy things that said they would work. I even heard that sweet corn in the can works as good bait. Ya know what I found? The ways dad taught me were best. They didn't want corn. They wanted worms. The fish didn't even want that stuff the guy at Wal-Mart recommended. So I gave up the rod and stuff in the tackle box I tried to expand with and have returned to the old methods that apparently were tried and true. My father has a lifetime license, but I doubt he will go with me to the stream anymore. But I will be honest I am bitin' at the bit to go out and catch him some fish and bring them home to him.

I enjoyed this thank you :)

Melissa, I think you can use your bobber anywhere you choose to fish. Being able to see it and keep track of it in some waters is another thing. I personal like bottom fishing, but if I do use a bobber, it will be a slip bobber. I think they are a better choice than the clip on kind. When I bottom fish, I am always watching my line and usually have a finger on it near my reel, so I can feel it anything may hit on my bait. I almost always use worms, but will go to artificial every now and then.

I prefer worms to artificial as have rarely caught anything with artificial bait. They use shrimp here in the ocean and bay so I will give that a try.

JAGG 03-09-2012 01:06 PM

Well artificial bait is tricky. Depends on what type of fish you want what time of year and what time of day it is. Grasshoppers are good bait. I love vienna sausages too, not sure why but I have a lot of luck with those. Croppy and catfish love them. Maybe the smell who knows.

I never thought about vienna sausages. Might have to give that a try too.

I hope I have time this year. I want to open produce stands and hopefully can steal a few hours a week to drop a line.

There is a town in va called narrows and it has some killer spots to fish in and kayak too !!

I got this idea from feeding some turtles in a pond one day on a picnic with my niece. So good luck with it. I usually cut the little sausages length wise once then in half once so I have 4 equal peices and put them on a hook, I do use a bobber like wolfy does and a few weights to sink my line , because catfish like to hide low so the farther down in the water the better off you are. Kind of stick close to the shore line too .

I used to have trouble with artificial bait too, until I went fishing with some buddies at work who are serious fisherman, they taught me alot.

Are there any types or brands they prefer? Can you pass some of those tips on :)

Talon 04-20-2012 09:49 AM

I enjoy fishing for large mouth bass, and usually use medium-sized shiners...which seem to work pretty well. But is there another type of bait that might work even better?

Bumping this thread

I see the last couple of posts had questions
Hoping someone else sees them and can answer

I'm tired and can't bring my brain to think proper right now

Rockinonahigh 06-10-2012 09:07 PM

Gramps and I would fish off the banks of the mighty red river, his favorite bait was chicken livers or hearts, once we ran out so he used some blongna and a couple of nugets of corn in the can.All worked really well, been a long time since I went fishing.

I'm a Femme who loves to fish.

Jack and I are actually going on a camping/fishing trip next weekend! We fish off of our bass boat and are going to a lake that is rich with white bass, stripers, walleye, brown trout, crappie, and catfish. Yes, there is a little bit of everything on this lake because of its size!

Very excited! I have my own poles and we kinda troll back and forth in the channels that my family has been fishing for as long as I can remember and we always seem to have great luck.

Last year, something hit one of our poles so hard that it snapped 27-pound lead core. That is a BIG ASS FISH.

Needless to say, going to look for Big Bertha next weekend!

Martina 06-10-2012 09:58 PM

i was reading Field and Stream at Jiffy Lube today and read that muskie eat ducklings. There are these little duckling lures that people buy to catch muskie. God. i suppose there are many more ducklings than large muskie, but honestly i am not too happy with the Muskellunges.

DUCKLINGS??? Nature is too gross sometimes.

Fished for many years, but only with my dad. I never learned much and still can't clean a fish. I did it just to be outside and hang out with my dad. It's sad that he is too old to go out now. i miss it.

I'm guessing there are other fish with teeth that do the same thing.
We catch fish and bring them home, so Muskie catch there dinner and eat it right away.
It's part of nature taking care of nature. Like humans, we hunt (ok, some of us don't).

Several years ago my son bought a bass boat,he used my suv to pull it to the lake,so you would think he would take his mom fishing once and a while??
Nope, never happened a he always went with heis buddies the fue times he went.Thats ok cause he and the wild bunch went to toledo bend to fish but didnt catch a thing..I on the other hand went pole fishing on the river bank and caught a ice chest full of brem and chanel cat..they still havent lived that one down.

I so enjoy fishing, I was born and raised in Florida so I have fished in Oceans as well as Lakes. My very favorite place to fish is right in my own back yard. I can remember getting up earling as a kid going out there fishing and having my mom yelling out the door to get my but inside and cleaned up for school. I have caught everything in that lake from brim, catfish, bass, cottenmouth snakes to Gators. It was a time to sit and think and just relax. I don't get to do it as much now but I am always ready to get up and head out. *smiles :)

Tennessee/Arkansas

Good Morning.

Anyone interested in a camping/fishing trip in the Heber Springs area in September and/or October?

I love that area and have been there lots, but my girl has never been.

We fish all over TN, but want to get away for a long weekend in Arkansas.

We like to fish from our kayaks and have an extra one if anyone is interested...

Hey mbd,

I have actually picked up fishing again since moving down here to Florida. I see a ton of people fishing from kayaks. I plan on getting one sometime in the near future.

Sounds like a good time @ long weekend in Arkansas.

One of my favorite fishing shows is The Angling Edge with the Lindners. I always learn a lot from each episode. If you're interested check their website out. Put your pointer over Angling Edge near the top and then click watch episodes from the drop down list. (they're full episodes, last two years of their show)

DUDE...now that is a bass!

Wednesday, March 6, 2013 2:07pm PST

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

An Alabama resident has reeled in a 70-pound striped bass that shattered a 34-year-old state record and could land the angler in the book of world records for the heaviest striper ever caught in a landlocked fishery.

James R. Bramlet, 65, reeled in the behemoth on the Black Warrior River on Feb. 28. The catch, weighed on a certified scale, exceeds the previous record, set in 1959, by 15 pounds. (Bramlet and his catch are pictured at right.)

"It's definitely uncommon," Heath Haley, a biologist for Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, told Field & Stream. "This fish certainly, in my opinion, was an anomaly. It's a very fat, chunky fish.

"The previous record being 55 pounds, the fact that it hasn't been broken since the 1950s, it's just incredible that not only he broke it, but he shattered it. You just don't see them that big that often."

The striper measured 45.5 inches long and boasted a girth of 37.75.

According to Joe Songer of AL.com, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has already approved the catch as a state record. If approved by the International Game Fish Association it'll become a new world record (this process can take weeks or months).

The current IGFA record for landlocked stripers is a 67-pound, 8-ounce specimen landed in 1992 in Los Banos, California.

Bramlet credits his wife, Janice, for urging him to go fishing on Feb. 28. She was scheduled to undergo a hospital procedure in a few days and would need him to be around and take care of her.

Bramlet told Songer that the fish rolled on the surface, showing itself, so he tossed a bait and soon hooked up. The battle lasted 20 minutes and as soon as Bramlet could secure the catch, he telephoned his wife to share the news about the memorable catch--and, presumably, to thank her for persuading him to go fishing.

The boss said "take the rest of the day off", and I said, "I'm going fishing!"

I had an excellent day fishing today at Henry Hagg Lake, in Forest Grove Oregon. It was a cold day, breezy at times, and poured down rain more than once during the several hours I spent today. I didn't mind any of the weather, but the rain was a bit of a pain, because I couldn't read my Kindle during the downpours (as if I have any right to bitch, when I've spent a paid day off fishing)...

I caught 7 trout, I took 5 home, and threw two back to the Goddess of the lake. ;)

I posted a photo of the day's catch in the gallery here...I was pretty amazed that each fish I caught today, was bigger than the one before it. It was weird!

Personally, I've never caught a rainbow trout as big as the last two fish that I caught today. I'm also really proud of myself, this was my first solo fishing trip. I've always shied away from it, because despite the fact that among my friends, I have always been the one who dispatches and cleans the fish, I didn't think that I could do all of the jobs by myself. I've always had some one grab the fish as it comes out of the water, they hold it while I either cut the line or pull out the hook, and then they hold the fish while I dispatch it and gut it. So, I was really nervous, but it was actually quite simple, quicker, and less messy.

It really has been an amazing day for me. I feel really great about my trip, and now I feel even more competent at fishing.

And oooohhhhh so jealous of Hollylane catchin trout! And that is a kickass story too!

omg! Fishing is so fun!

I just cant touch the worm...
or put it on the hook...
or take the fish off the hook
or touch them really (ew)...

I just run down the dock with the pole in hand screaming excitedly "I got one! I got one!" dragging the fish along...

*circus*

I was told, by a local, that I caught myself a river slam.
Not a grand slam though.
The species i caught on that river in a few hours were: smallmouth bass, redhorse (Cherokee fish), sculpin, hornyhead and a rainbow trout. I think that was all of them. hard to believe that river has so many species of fish in it.

To get a grand slam, I would have had to catch a brown and brook trout, along with the rainbow.

Today is a good day to fish! It is overcast and cool
