Ok, for the record.... I just want to be crystal clear here, because it must be said:

I was never comfortable being 'crowned' a Tech Guru (speaking only for myself, not Mr. Linus). I went along with all that hype to *cough* be polite... (besides kinda hard to be be a guru with both hands tied behind ones back)

I'd like to bring up another subject that yes I'll admit has been prompted by a discussion on another vbulletin site, and that's the matter of deleting accounts, or when it's requested to do so.

Admin please see this only as a suggestion, the last thing I want to come across as is patronizing. But I'm very ... perturbed.

A user felt no recourse but to ask for their account to be deleted in a public thread. Now, I'm not an idiot it seems to be the *opposite* of what one should do if they don't want to use their account. I also get that deleting accounts and threads and posts and things can cause corruption of data in databases (check). (never mind that there's optimized tools for that and 'techy' things aren't 100% such is life)

So here's my suggestion for here just is would work *elsewhere*. Putting a username into a usergroup where the username doesn't show up in the membership list is hella easy. (just ask June as she's dancing in the "Coppa"cabana) That's step one. Step two: deleting posts... not something you might choose to do but if you feel this person is genuinely concerned for their safety, there is something called the "soft delete" making all posts invisible for public consumption.

Sorry if I I'm sounding frustrated folks but I think as *this* site grows issues like this will crop up. And with a lot of things, there usually are exceptions to 'rules'.

just ask June... as she's still dancing at the 'Coppa'cabana. :tease:

(with plenty of snarky goodness in the direction of the snark queen).

Admin - what say ye? feel free to discuss this more in private.
To the rest, my apologies if this post is laced with a few not-so private jokes.

Medusa 11-18-2009 03:29 PM

I think these are all great suggestions!

I also saw a user over there asking for their name to be deleted for privacy concerns - would it also be an option if that ever happened over here to change the persons user name to something innocuous like "bbbb" or "nolongerinuse1"?

thoughts?

Arwen 11-18-2009 03:29 PM

  • Hinduism & Tibetan Buddhism. A personal spiritual teacher. (PapaC, you are definitely a teacher.)
    1. A teacher and guide in spiritual and philosophical matters.
    2. A trusted counselor and adviser; a mentor.(PapaC, you are definitely someone I would go to for advice and counsel on tech things..)
    1. A recognized leader in a field: the guru of high finance.(PapaC, you are definitely recognized.)
    2. An acknowledged and influential advocate, as of a movement or idea: "In a culture that worships slimness, he was the Guru of Lean" (Erica Abeel).(PapaC, you are definitely influential.)

So, sorry sugar, seems you do qualify as a guru. :)

Hey honey, yeah, *I* think that's a great idea, but I just don't know how it would fly in the backend with mysql. Some google research might help. PM later tonight if you wanna chit chat about that.

Ohhhhhhhh! I have one!!! A KERMIT THE FROG avatar!!!! Its a nessessity!!!
( i plan on being a paid subscriber soon and being able to make my own, but until then....)

NotAnAverageGuy 11-18-2009 07:18 PM

Avatars, is there a certain dimension we are supposed to use? And is that a paid member thing or no?

Admin 11-18-2009 07:29 PM

Custom avatars (like a Kermit one ;) ) are available to paid members :)

but yes, they need to be no larger than 100x100.

I was thinking it might be 'nice' to have a button whereby one could donate even the smallest amount in recognition of a certain event - birthdays, anniversaries, the passing of exams, or simply something good happening out of the blue - to go towards a specific purpose (covering the registration fee, for example, of someone deserving who would like to attend the reunion but who for financial reasons would be hard pressed to do so without some help?)

Apart from anything else, if the reason were displayed for all to see, I think it would help us all in terms of feeling even more connected.

Thoughts?

julieisafemme 11-19-2009 09:26 AM

I love that idea. That feels like a community.

I like that. Would these be for a specific user's "trust fund" or a general pool "trust fund"?

Words 11-19-2009 09:33 AM

Well, what made me think about it was my son passing his driving test the other day. It's custom in the Middle East (we lived there for years) to pass out sweets to neighbours and friends when something good happens and it made me kind of sad that we had no one close by to do that with. So I got to thinking, what if there were a way I could pass out virtual sweets? I guess I could have simply made a small donation but I wanted to share the reason I was happy as well as the actual 'sweets'...

Make sense?

No, a general trust fund Linus.

I just think it would be really nice to know when one was donating that it was going toward a specific purpose (the example I used, i.e., the reunion, being a cause particularly dear to my own heart. Everyone should get to go to the reunion and I just hate the idea that for some people, some really good people, it might not be doable for financial reasons.)

But you know what, coming to think of it...perhaps we could have several funds. You know, I would like to donate to a. b., or c. Yes? No? Maybe?

Apocalipstic 11-19-2009 02:48 PM

I'm back! This is all so cool.

So I posted pictures and they are HUGE, I want to see myself less clearly. eeeeekkkkkk Where is the delete button for the galleries, I have seen it mentioned, but I just can't find it. So sorry.

and

Are there terms of service with what we can and can't do? Rules? that sort of thing?

Thank you also for how quickly and graciously you are handling things! I know we are high maintenance.

:deepthoughts:

Admin 11-19-2009 02:53 PM

Hey Words!

I really resonate with you on helping people get to the Reunion. Lemme do some thinking on it on how the best way to do this will be and we can either put up a donate button going to a specific account for those causes or we can figure out something else.

We will DEFINITELY be taking a hard look at our finances here on the site around Reunion time to see what kind of scholarships the site can provide from the remaining funds. We, of course, want to pay our server fees first and will probably have to come up with most of our deposits in cash since we have no credit as a site to book events yet.

We do have a strong, non-negotiable commitment as Admins of this site to see that every single dollar that comes into this site will go back to support the community in one form or another. That means that we might pay the server fees, upgrade the software, hardware, pay for any needed tech support, Reunion costs, and an emergency fund.....and that when we have ANY money left over, we will look at ways to scholarship people to the Reunion, give grants to artists and writers, or help send folks to conferences.

This isnt a business to us, its a community, and I would probably die of joy if we were able to do a low-cost Reunion and also scholarship several folks...and for folks who didn't want to attend the Reunion, we can work at other ways of supporting their passions.

I cant WAIT to see this community grow!

XO!

Hey you...

When I open up one of my pictures, along the top pink bar and over to the far right is a drop-down called Photo Options. When I click on that, I get a drop-down menu and can select Edit Photo. The delete option is in there.

Waldo's wishlist:

Links from posts to galleries. I like to perv.

An Active Topics page, with full pagination so we can scroll through all the recently updated threads, not just the first fifteen. I'm lazy and don't like having to go forum to forum. Like this link - but inclusive of all threads, not just the new stuff since you last logged in: http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/foru....php?do=getnew

Can we get location on the Member list? I like being able to see where people are spread out to.

I'm sure I'll think of something else as soon as I go to bed tonight.
