James Whale, director of such classic monster films Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and other types of films as well. Whale lived openly in Hollywood in the 1920-1930's which was pretty much unheard of at the time. His own life was portrayed on screen in the movie Gods and Monsters (1998 d. by Bill Condon also openly gay he directed the film Dreamgirls and others) with Sir Ian McKellen playing him.

Kate Bornstein, activist, playwright, artist, author, and fabulous. The first time I ever saw the words gender outlaw it was because of Kate.

Ma Rainey (the Mother of the Blues)

from the Prove It On Me Blues:

Went out last night, had a great big fight
Everything seemed to go on wrong
I looked up, to my surprise
The gal I was with was gone.

Where she went, I don’t know
I mean to follow everywhere she goes;
Folks say I’m crooked.
I didn’t know where she took it
I want the whole world to know.

They say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
Sure got to prove it on me;
Went out last night
with a crowd of my friends,
They must’ve been women,
‘cause I don’t like no men.

It’s true I wear a collar and a tie,
Makes the wind blow all the while
Don’t you say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
You sure got to prove it on me.

Say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
Sure got to prove it on me.

I went out last night
with a crowd of my friends,
It must’ve been women,
‘cause I don’t like no men.
Wear my clothes just like a fan
Talk to the gals just like any old man

Cause they say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
Sure got to prove it on me.

Ah, love that Dorothy!! Inventor of the 'boom mike' (this is where the mike is attached to a pole which follows the actors around), and 'married' to choreographer Marion Morgan for 23 years, until Marion's death.

'The Girls: Sappho Goes to Hollywood' - Diana McLellan, L.A. Books, 2000; a revealing 'tell-all' book about the most famous female names in Hollywood during it's heyday. From the early days of Hollywood until the studio system ended, this book is a delicious and scandalous read for anyone interested in classic Hollywood. It is certainly an eye-opener for many!! Many actresses you would never have dreamed of - exuding glamour thru every pore, and their many romantic involvements with men (beards) were lesbian. I recommend it highly. There's also another book: 'The Sewing Circle: Sappho's Leading Ladies' - Axel Madson, Kensington Books, 1995; which is another expose on those beloved classic icons.

Alberta Hunter

from redhotjazz.com:

Her husband moved back to the South and she never saw him again. Alberta met Lottie Taylor soon afterwards. She was the niece of the famous African-American entertainer Bert Williams. The two became lovers and stayed together for many years. Alberta moved on to a club called Elite Cafe #1 (3030 South State Street) where New Orleans Ragtime pianist Tony Jackson tickled the keys. Unlike Alberta, Tony Jackson was openly gay, which must have taken a lot of guts back in those days. Alberta helped to popularize some of Jackson's songs, including his most famous song, "Pretty Baby" which was written for his boyfriend.

Tony Jackson, ragtime legend, wrote this song for his boyfriend

You hate to have me call you "Pretty Baby."
I really thought that I was pleasing you,
For you're just a baby to me.
Your cunning little dimples and your baby stare,
Your baby talk and baby walk and curly hair,
Your baby smile
Makes life worthwhile.
You're just as sweet as you can be.

Your mother said you were the cutest kid.
No wonder, Dearie, that I'm wild about you
And all the cunning things you said and did.
Why, I love to fondly recall.
And just like Peter Pan it seems you'll always be
The same sweet cunning little baby dear to me,
And that is why
I'm sure that I
Will always love you best of all.

Everybody loves a baby that's why I'm in love with you,
Pretty baby, pretty baby,
And I'd like to be your sister, brother, dad and mother too,
Pretty baby, pretty baby.
Won't you come and let me rock you in my cradle of love
And we'll cuddle all the time.
Oh, I want a lovin' baby, and it might as well be you,
Pretty baby of mine,
Pretty baby of mine.

Bessie Smith

http://www.lessignets.com/signetsdia...ssie_Smith.jpg

It is well known that not only was Bessie Smith herself a bisexual, but her own chorus line tended to be sexually fluid as well. As she traveled the blues circuits, she would provide her entourage with places to be in many cities.

She was known to sing this song with female pronouns, though I can't find a recording of it.

When you are replying to the thread, there is a little icon to the left of the quote icon that has an image of mountains and the moon. If you click that, a box pops up, and you can paste the photo link into that.

Josephine Baker

from GLReview: Jean-Claude’s biography mentions six of her women lovers by name: Clara Smith, Evelyn Sheppard, Bessie Allison, and Mildred Smallwood, all of whom she met on the black performing circuit during her early years onstage in the United States; along with fellow American black expatriate Bricktop and the French novelist Colette after she relocated to Paris.

Is this 'mountain & moon' icon seen *after* one clicks on 'quote' to respond, or after? In either case, I don't see it anywhere...

i LOVE these. THANKS!! i love their story too. i want a Rhodes Scholar yard boy to show up at my house and fall instantly in love with me when i open the door. Sigh.

Rachel has said that if her partner asked her to quit her job and move to the UP or some remote place, she'd do it in an instant.

i love that the partner is no high powered whatever. She is an accountant who does some kind of art. An interesting and i am sure wonderful person. But it's not some power couple thing.

THanks again for the pics!!

You're welcome, someone turned them up on a Fabu List ! Looking closer they are from StumbleUpon, an interesting internet thing...I probably should have also mentioned they are clearly from the photo shoot, for the People Magazine Article, which I don't yet have, but am making it a minor priority to find ; )
