This hobbit hole of a home was built in Wales from stone, mud, and remnant wood from nearby forests, costing $10/sq. foot. Natural light streams in from a skylight at the top of the earthen, grass-covered dome. The use of materials from the construction site and the way the home was designed give it that truly unique, eco-friendly character that can only be found in earthen and cob homes.

Cob House on Mayne Island, Canada has nice flowing lines and is basically built from a mixture of mud. This adorable little cob cabin mimics the style often seen in England. It features the smooth surfaces, curved walls and archways so typical of cob architecture.

At the Venice Architecture Biennale 2010 Lisbon firm Aires Mateus Architects are exhibiting these houses with sandy floors called Casa Areia. The project comprises seaside accommodation made of wooden frames covered in natural fibres. Sand covers the floor in the kitchen and living space, connecting them to the beach and landscape outside.

Here in coastal New England, we refer to this style as "what the inside of your house looks like when the tide recedes". ;)

Hmmmm....I can foresee a few problems here.

1. Not a good house if one were to own a cat.

2. Hot sex on the floor might be a skosh problematic.

3. The "5 second rule" would no longer apply to any dropped food items (especially anything sticky.)

4. If your drop an earring back, contact lens, etc. good luck on finding it. Ever.

Of course the upshot is no vacuuming required.

Katniss~~(clearly rampant insomnia has me over thinking things....)

Patrick Dougherty is a builder but he is perhaps best described as an artist and sculptor, a wood craftsman the likes of which most of us have never seen. Rather than cutting, planing, leveling and assembling rectilinear wood structures he shapes living trees into amazing natural tree buildings.

In search of the frosting fairy ...

I would do almost (please note the 'almost' is negotiable, depending on how delicious said confection is) anything for a bit of cream cheese frosting (hold the cake).

*le sigh*
