Oh my..
Why haven't i browsed the hobbies section in this forum before?
i have subscribed to so many threads, and responding in this one because this is exciting to me...

Years ago, i would spend lots of time with my grandmother as a child.
One thing i hold very dear to me, was her teaching me to knit and crochet.
Also, a dear friend of mine taught me to do tatting, much fun as well. i'd love to revisit that one day as well.

Isolating myself for years and years, i let go of many hobbies of mine..
Merely not allowing myself to do things i love..Knitting and crocheting is one of them. Since being here in Oregon, i had the pleasure of being tasked with cleaning through some boxes and things Mr Mtn has been wanting to clean out, and i found some knitting books and magazines which belonged to His mother and started to go through them. A friend of Ours here We gave the yarn to, and will give some of the books but since then have decided that i will keep some for myself as well, i really want to get back into knitting and crocheting and creating some beautiful things again!

Love that i am taking my life back, and will love revisiting old hobbies as well as finding new hobbies.. Much looking forward to looking back in this thread & getting myself back into this! Especially now that my Nanny G can't knit or crochet anymore because of her eyesight, and alzheimer's.. But i would love to do this, for her especially.. <3

Thanks for this thread!

I sew and crochet.

Me too! My mom is left handed and she tried knitting with me but I just couldn't pick that up. I enjoy my craft room and get lots of crafty ideas from Pinterest. I'm working on something with old car license plates right now. I will be trying my hand at using metal scissors. Lol I'll post the completed project when I'm finished..stay tuned :)

Hobbies

I am a crocheter and just recently got the Beading/Jewelry making Bug.

I just bought a book to try and learn basic crochet. I don't want to make fancy patterns right away, but I would love to have something to do with my hands while I am recovering from my upcoming surgery. Im not sure I am coordinated enough to actually crochet! My past "squares" all came out looking like pizza slices!!!

Chain row is too tight Leah. Relax. Practice chaining. I had to for the longest time. Another solution is to chain with a hook one size larger than hook for blanket. For example, I may use a J hook for chaining and a K hook for crocheting the actual square.

Perhaps that's because you forget to do a chain stitch "in the air" at the end of each row, so each row becomes smaller than the preceding one. It is a common mistake from beginners.

Damonk, thanks for the advice. I will try chaining a bit more. I got many sizes of hooks in the kit, so I will practice with the bigger ones.
Elle, I agree with you. I just turn the yarn around and start crocheting backwards down the other side. I think I need to take Damonk's advice and stick to chaining for a bit! I also have to learn how to make the loop at the very beginning.

I just realized I got J and K backwards. I would chain with K, work with J

Beginning loop, pull out enough yarn for about a 6 in tail. Pinch yarn between fingers, twist over so creates an x, grab strand to yarn skein, tighten.

I forgot, pull that strand through loop to tighten.

I'm a lefty so I do a lot of these techniques very different.

I love to crochet...especially in the winter... I'm wanting to learn to knit. There was a knitting circle in my town and I'm regretting not going since the sign for it is now down from the library where it was held :( And the place where I get my gooder yarn has closed and they had lessons also...I did try to learn from a DVD but I can only get so far (casting on) before I get hopelessly losted :( I do have an aunt that says she can teach me and I was fortunate enough to "inherit" my grandmother's knitting needles...so hopefully her skill will channel through them into my inexperienced hands <3 Miss you memere....xoxo
