Driving range?! :) Now there is a good release ... Wacking the snot outta that wee little white ball. Wow, that is grand that you are able to be around all that temptation. I can't imagine it yet....Hopefully at 9 weeks I will feel different.
You keep on keeping on! This wreck feeling will past:)

not only have i used it a lot lately however i have also seen in written context in just about every book i have picked up ...

temptation all around all the time...its a choice i'm making every day, yesterday ,today etc...through the tears the heartaches and what not's...

I went to the driving range with a smoker friend yesterday...hm no i did not cave...no i did not smoke....i did however roll one around between my fingers to see how it felt...and well it was odd the feeling in all honesty...tried to get a hold of what i used to feel...and i couldn't...i could have taken the next step and lit it however i didn't want to and i didnt want to throw away my 9 weeks 2 days lol

i like what you say doc...

I dont conform easily to societal rules and such on how to live same went for the patch...i used a 21 mg the whole time....when i want to cut down i cut the 21 mg in half then quarters then in 8ths....im officially off the patch...no wonder im a wreck...

Just swinging by to give hugs and loves to everyone.

Starrynightaw 06-15-2011 10:23 AM

I applaud everyone for fighting the good fight. I lost my father to lung cancer, and ever since I always try to help people understand you being here is worth more than you wanting to light it up.

Much respect!

OS Butch 06-15-2011 10:41 AM

Sweet!:) Thank you.

Thank you for the support. I am sure you know that it takes more than knowing.... That is the hardest part. My daughter would frown and sigh, every time I would go back to smoking. This is the last time I am quitting. :)

WooHoo for you, 3 days off the patch.

I love to golf. I just wish I had started sooner. I hack up the course pretty bad. I haven't golfed in almost a month. I play on a ladies league every Monday. My next outing will be on June 20.....I have never golfed without smoking between tees...

I hope you enjoy golf. To me it is a nice relaxing, albeit at times cause of much angst, great time. The plus is that I was only one of 3 smokers in the league, so I will request a non smoking group for this Monday. After that, I am sure I will be fine:)

PS you do not have to change groups or the people you hang out with you have to change you one day at a time...one step at a time...the only person you can change is you...if you enjoy the group your with i say stick with them...

I really am not changing anything. We are a group of 24 and groups are different every week so everyone gets to be with everyone at some point during the season. I know me and I have a very addictive and routine driven personality....It isn't the nicotine that drives my cravings to smoke. I am very visual. I see it, especially when doing something that I always do...Retraining me isn't the easiest thing for me to accomplish.... Very "who moved my cheese?!" thing

Probably why I am single;):sunglass:

"I moved your darn cheese" lol runs n hides quickly.

nah I'm kidding and I hope you laughed at that because person to person I might said an alternate word to darn.

I get being routine oriented as most onus are...here's the trick include "not smoking " into your routines.

I too am visual with the whole smoking thing I might follow a smoker with my eyes however I've noticed the last several weeks I don't do that anymore.

I might and have been known to ask for one however love it when my friends say oh hell no you don't.

you will be ok. :)

Daktari 06-16-2011 02:15 PM

Hugely visual and routine driven here and the visual cues still get me sometimes, especially with my 'smoking buddy' who still smokes joints whilst I smoke a bong. It's not half so bad anymore but it has required much 'digging the heels in' to get through.

gaea 06-17-2011 09:44 AM

Holy cow, I am munching everything in site. I just put in some popcorn in the microwave....I burnt it.....grrrrrr.. Good thing it wasn't the last bag! Of course when I went to put it in there, I found the cup of coffee I put in there to warm up a bit ago.....:sunglass:

ok this made me laugh out loud seriously, not because you burned your popcorn however because you forgot about a cup of coffee in the micro, i did that in my first month felt so lost :seeingstars:all the time and because of feeling lost i started losing things ie :coffee:...warmed up a cup one day couldn't find my coffee knew i had it where'd it go ? was 2 days before i found it because i rarely use the microwave...imagine my laughter when i did...

this too shall pass just hold on on tight ok...

Your body is tricking you and so is your mind....fight it trick it back..."holler" if you need to eventually all this goes away...kick the "trickster" out of your
"house"

the trickster clearly being your "cravings" and your "house" being your mind..

Thanks so much for your insight. No matter how old someone is, it is always great to get another's support.

I just got home from my parents, Sunday evening and nothing to do....Boredom is another thing that use to trigger me smoking. I am fine, I will be fine and I don't need to smoke:) Stomping my boots....well, not really, took my shoes off when I got home:)

Daktari 06-20-2011 04:11 AM

Y'all are doing brilliantly!

Go you gaea getting past using the patches.

I've had visual cues all weekend as I've spent time with two smokers. One of them is a heavy smoker and I've been breathing in her second-hand smoke whilst I've been teaching her things on the computer which has been quite unpleasant. Just that breathing in what has become vile tasting smoke has made it really easy to put any thoughts of smoking out of my head.

Don't give up giving up!

Good morning Incubus. If I remember correctly. don't you have COPD? I have a very good friend that has this and as a curosity we never smoke around her and if we even have sniffles of a cold, we do not go visit, it could be deadly to her. Small price for us to pay for our friend.

If it were me and I had that, I would certainly ask people to not smoke around me. I never have people smoke inside my home, even when I was smoking. I believe that they could abstain for the short time they are visiting or they could out to the back porch as I had always done.
Of course out in public, it is your choice whether or not to go into a place where there is smoking. Here there are more and more smoking bans so it is pretty easy to dine and do most things without having to deal with the smoking folks.

Please put you and your health first:)

OS Butch 06-20-2011 07:01 AM

i deal with visuals most days and mostly they dont bother me in fact ive started to look at what is odd about smoking, perhaps this way of thinking will help me on my journey....

being around it can trigger instant heart burn for me or not i think it depends on the brand...most brands i can handle they smell different as well...

when it comes to the brand i chose the scent is distinct and almost tempting and no heartburn occurs its really strange.

10 full weeks behind me as of today beginning my 11th....wow...go me...too

:)

10 complete weeks! That is grand, gaea. If you don't mind, tell me how many times had you tried to quit, if any, and the longest period you made it previously.

I cannot count how many times over the past 40 years. I had quit for 9 years about 30 years ago. Boy, now there is a regret!

I do indeed have copd OSButch. To be fair, I think it is the first time I've ever sat so close to a heavy smoker in the whole time I've not been smoking, so it's not usually something I have to deal with.

It just doesn't feel right to ask smokers not to smoke around me, not if I want to visit them in their own houses where they usually smoke inside. I'm going to be telling them about how fabulous it is not to smoke and how much better I feel because I gave up and that I am the example of what happens if you don't give up anyway.

My friends were shocked at how debilitated I have become due to copd so I know I've made them consider their own smoking habits.

Whoa! You've come so far gaea. :rrose:

I'm glad I can't smell. It means it's one less trigger. The visuals are an odd one. They don't get me all the time, just sometimes.

D'yanno, I see folks smoking around town nowadays and it almost always makes me think, 'jeez I'm glad I don't smoke now'.

I've had the bestest excuse to smoke. I've had one of the worst bits of news I could possibly get. My housemate (and ex) is selling the house we've lived in for 13yrs. If that's not a good excuse I don't know what is but I'm diggin' in m'Harley boot heels and I'm not going to give her that power over me.

You're getting the right bits of you fixed gaea...bad throats are smoking related surely? Get it all done. I've had two chest full-on chest infections since I stopped instead of the usuall 5!! Get yer throat sorted out and maybe you can stop them huh?

It was fantastic to prove to my ex-lover that all my tooth infections over the last few years since I've known her have been smoking related. I know she's going to try give up........again! I shall support her every step if necessary.

Good morning gaea and Incubus!

Hey there OSB

Almost a month, how damn cool is that. You've done one month you can do another. And so it carries on. You're doing brilliantly. Do you feel a different, "this time I'm going to succeed" mind-set?

I started a thread thread like this on a UK based BF site when I was giving up and like you found it a 'comfort' to post my progress most days. I was the only one giving up at the time but still received support from those that had already done it. I found that in writing the posts I was supporting myself. If no-one else had said anything I would still have continued posting and giving up. I guess it was more a blog than an interactive thread but it worked for me.

As you can see I still find visiting the giving up smoking thread somewhat comforting. Infact it's supporting other folks that I gain comfort from now. I am the lesson of what happens if you don't give up and if I can help another from learning that lesson the hardest way then I'm happy. :cheesy:

Keep the faith and don't give up giving up.

Ooooh the moments still come even after a year or so. They're just easier to rationalise and deal with.

I'm glad you feel that way. I'm 'enjoying', if that's the right word, watching both you and gaea walk this walk. It's a privilege to be able to offer any hand-holding that's needed.

Just by writing your experience of giving up this time with the positivity you're showing after many a failure is supportive.

I am proud of you all!
:goodscore:

I quit once for 8 years.

:|

I have cut down, but am not quite at the 'quit' stage again.
We decided to start off with the 'eating better than we ever have' first.
This way I don't cave straight for the junk food fix during the no-smoke stage.

Hey there Daywalker, can I ask what made you go back to tobacco after 8yrs?
Wishing you luck on the healthy preparations for giving up. Is it junk food that is your downfall or is it just substituting one oral fixation for another (any sort of food?). I tried really hard not to substitute cigs/joints for food. I still gained weight because my metabolism wasn't artificially speeded up by nicotine - not to mention hitting man-o-pause and becoming a sedentary student all at the same time . 25 whole pounds all round my middle sucks but at least my poorly-sick lungs aren't being tortured by all the toxins in tobacco. Btw. I did check with my copd nurse that I could still smoke 'erb as long as it was sans tobacco and he said "...yes, as long as it's through one of those 'water bung' things" *insert bong tokin' smiley*

lol gaea...what I'd give for a break in the hospital right now, even the loony bin (I'd probably fit right in :jester:)

Make sure you rest (and sleep) lots, drink lots of liquids and rest some more.

Almost 11wks...just a week away from 3 whole MONTHS if the universe wills it. I'm stoked for you dudette

Well I was going thru a break-up and wanted to self destruct for
a couple weeks, lol...what that turned into was a few social outings
where just one smoke with a cocktail here n there was do-able.
:wine:
I now had my house to myself and would have 'just one smoke' before
getting on the bike and heading across the bridge to work. That turned
into 'just one here' and 'just one there'...but it kept me from delving in
to the icky world of drugs which can be easy in the Bay Area.
:shark:

So in a way it saved me, but then it stayed...to kill me. LOL.
:cigar2:

I know from past experience that eating was a quick replacement for
the occupying of the hands and jaws, and what with my love of all things
resembling Ding Dongs, etc. we have decided that if we were going to have
a chance at not replacing one evil for another then setting one pattern at
a time would be best. Therefore we have embarked on the eating healthier
project first. Once we are confident it has become second nature to grab
fruit instead of pastries...lol, then we can consider ourselves
ready for Phase 2 ~ Operation Kick da Butts.
:police:

I had quit for short periods of time since...once for over a year, etc.
Somehow it was easier when I was 25 to go cold turkey.
Over 20 years later it seems more a precarious
journey thru smoking hoops of evil.
:|

And yes, the 'erb smoking is healthier thru a water bong, I am more apt
to roll mine in Job Crystal papers. They're see thru...it's paper before it
goes thru the chemical process to become white.
Burns clean and smooth and slow.
:weedsmoke:

Hope that answered yer query and to all who have begun their journey
already...just remember there is no map, this journey is
driven by your mind not your feet!

:ohm:
