I hope it's okay to post here since it's an Austin thread...

Thinking about moving there and wondering what the job market is like. I work in health insurance and want to stay in the same career field if that's an option. I don't know how gay friendly Austin is or if there's things to do there geared towards our community, but it can't be any worse than Louisville.

If any of you on the thread can give me the low-down on jobs, etc., please shoot me a message.

Thanks.

I can't help ya with the job field. I dont actually live in Austin, but close.

I lived in Louisville for 8 years. I loved it there, but the LGBT community was terrible. I went to Tink's only about once a month cuz that is about all i could take..lol.

You will LOOOOOVE Austin. great area, great community. Costs is about the same as Louisville. Texas doesnt have state tax.

ferret 12-27-2011 09:52 PM

I agree. The LGBT community in Louisville is terrible. And Tink's FINALLY closed. I've been here five years now, and I think I've pretty much had it.

Arwen 12-28-2011 01:00 AM

Heyla Ferret! Austin is full of the bright and the shiny. We have a terrific community here. :)

I don't do bars so I can't speak to that. I'm not against bars... I just don't like to go where no one sees me. LOL

Arwen 12-28-2011 10:05 AM

Durrrrrrrr, let's try this. For your new year's resolution, you try being nicer to me. I'll let you know if it's working. :D

Hello,

I've live in Austin for the last 10 years of 22 spent in the central Texas area. Austin is the most gay friendly city in Texas IMHO. Dallas, Houston & San Antonio while they have had or do have more organized communities don't have the laid back, fun atmosphere that Austin has. The best way is to come visit & see for yourself. The job market for your industry may have jobs, but I. Would get the job first, then take the plunge & move.

I hope this helps.

Danz: on a Femmes journey...

Kannon, does the 1st still work for you?

blush 12-29-2011 11:00 PM

I don't know if we can make this for Kannon, but I'd suggest Madam Mam's.

No Gemme, I can't make it by the 1st. I'll be there on the 3rd probably by around 3 that afternoon.

Arwen 12-30-2011 01:15 AM

Well poop on no kannon for Sunday. Austinites, shall we do something anyway? :) Want to gather here and play games for a while?

I'd like to do something. It'll be another couple of weeks after this before I'll be able to do anything really, so something would be nice.

Okay, we can do lunch on Sunday. :) How about 1pm somewhere fun? As Glynn points out, we may need to look around for an open place.

It'll be easier finding something open on New Year's afternoon than Christmas, that's for sure.

:cheesy:

Any suggestions, anyone?

Both the Magnolia and Kerby lane are open, so is Rudy's BBQ @ 183. I cant find a Vietnamise or pho resturant that is open on Sunday in any part of town. The two mediterainian resturants north are not open until evening!
Found this Thai resturant Muangthai apparently open on sunday.

durrrrrrrr 12-31-2011 08:56 PM

I'm not gonna make it tomorrow. Sorry

Arwen 12-31-2011 09:06 PM

Mangia's Pizza at Lake Travis is open at 1pm.

Would y'all like to meet for coffee, or something, during the afternoon on the 3rd?

Anyone else up coffee or tea or whatever on the 3rd?

durrrrrrrr 01-01-2012 09:59 AM

Happy New Year everyone

Arwen 01-01-2012 10:25 AM

Can we make a decision about this afternoon? :D I don't mind driving.

I work 1:15 to 10:15 so I'm out for late things on the 3rd. They actually think I should be at work, rat bastids. :D

I am off at 7pm tomorrow night due to getting a better holiday schedule.

Gemme 01-01-2012 10:51 AM

Mangia's is about half an hour from me. While I would personally lazily like it to be closer, if it's a really good place and won't undo what I just spent the better part of an hour doing working out, then I am up for it.

Ebon did bring up a good point last night....what's up with a restaurant that has mang/e in the name?

Luckily....or unluckily as the case may be...I'm pretty adventureous with foods when I want to be.

Ebon is weird. You are weird for agreeing with his weirdness.

I don't care but someone needs to make a decision. Getting hungry and cranky.

Me too and I need to get into the shower. I'll check back when I get out. If the group as a whole hasn't come up with something, how about you and I find something?

:scrubadub:

Arwen 01-01-2012 11:56 AM

Works for me. I'm hitting the shower too.

Hand me the soap? :|

Arwen 01-01-2012 12:32 PM

Magnolia. On Lamar. 1:00-1:15 today. Gemme and I will be there.

Errr. Congress. I meant Congress.

Lamar is Congress in Arwen's world. :|

Gemme 01-01-2012 04:38 PM

Lunch was delish! The wait was worth it and the company was spectacular. Well, until that guy showed up.

Love you!

kannon 01-02-2012 10:42 PM

I think I got stood up. *heart being ripped out, thrown on the floor and stomped on* just kidding about the heart thing.

So, I doubt I'll make the drive tomorrow since she was the reason I was going to Austin in the first place. :seeingstars:

If I refuse to come, that only means I'm still in deep denial. :(
