Scars Character or battle scars?

Scars give character... Ever notice that when you are around friends that your scar becomes the theme to battle stories? For example, I have a scar on my forehead, and my friend says how did you get that? I say, I was surfing and hit the reef and the board knocked me out. My friend says well I was surfing a huge wave and I got wiped out and broke my ankle. Others say; Well it gives you character!

I have a the scar on my forehead from surfing and two weeks later I was a passenger in a car and I hit it open again on the windshield.

I have a entrance and exit scar right below my chest of a bullet hole because I couldn't jump fast enough out of the way of an angry drunk shot gun.

I have a scar on the right side of my head from a branch that pierced my motorcycle helmet and lodged into my skull.

I have a long scar on my left knee from a shot putt from high school.

I have a scar on my right knee from a knee scope that the pulled out broken bones from.

And this is just some of the "Character" That I have on my body. Anyone want to share there battle scars?

Leigh 06-05-2010 08:53 AM

I have My own set of battle scars, and I agree that they give you character but also for Me they tell a story of how we as human beings have gone through alot in life and are still here to tell people about our lives!

My battle scars include:

~ My left knee from when I fell running in kindergarten and split it open right down to the bone

~ My left arm, very faded mind you, from the first and only time I ever self-harmed

~ My stomach, from the middle to the right side just under My chest, from My recent gallbladder surgery plus a small one around My belly button from the first time they took it out

Thank you for starting this thread Blaze, I think its a great idea :)

Gemme 06-05-2010 07:34 PM

I have a scar on my forehead from chicken pox.

Tiny scars on my face from not being able to leave acne alone (sensing a theme here about not being able to keep my hands off of my face yet?).

A scar on my upper lip from my cousin throwing an opened old Folgers coffee can at me. The serated edge tore my lip up.

There's a scar on my arm from a series of shots I received as a child.

I have, literally, hundreds to tiny scars on my hands from the jobs I've done as well as being a general clutz. Oh, and there's the time I took a pair of scissors to my hands and gave myself about 50 paper cuts.

There is a faint, have to squint and know it's there to make it out, scar on my arm from a fight with a girl named Keisha. She had braces and bit me.

I have a scar from my kidney surgery when I was 5 that is on my lower abdomen. It's a jacked up, crooked, toked looking smiley face.

Most of my scars are from the hips up, but I have a few odd ones on my legs as well. I've been fortunate not to break a lot of bones and do a lot of stupid things that resulted in scars. Not that I haven't done a lot of stupid things; they just didn't result in a lot of scarring.

UofMfan 06-05-2010 07:43 PM

My scars are not visible, for they are not on my body, they are in places few get to see.

These cars have given me plenty of character, but I doubt they will be the talk of any party.

Linus 06-05-2010 07:43 PM

I have a faint scar over one eye from when I was about 2-3 and I poked a Saint Bernard in the eye.

I have a scar on my right hand from when my mom pulled a coat hanger out of my hand.

I have a scar on my left calf from where a dog bite me while I was walking along the street.

I have a scar on my right leg from when I went down a street late one night (or early morning, depending on your view) and I tried to avoid a drunk pedestrian while I was on my bike. I went sliding along the pavement.

I have a new scar from when I went for a walk a couple of weeks ago and slipped on some rocks.

Some scars are character builders; some are battle scars; some are reminders of a painful past.

afixer 06-05-2010 07:54 PM

I've got two or three that invoke questions from time to time and far too many others to mention the details one by one...I'm just full of character. :)

Sam 06-05-2010 08:12 PM

i have one scar, my first surgery in transition
by years end i will have 2 more for my chest surgery.

character for me. self containing. being true to myself.

apretty 06-05-2010 08:16 PM

I have just one word for you, friend: Insurance.

Waldo 06-05-2010 08:58 PM

I generally don't think I have a lot of physical scars, but then I just took a good look and realize I might be wrong about that.

Face/head:
  • I have a scar above my lip from when I was a kid and scratched my face with a sharp nail.
  • I have a scar on my lip from when I tried to hold a cat too tightly.
  • I have an inch+ long scar under my left eye from getting hit in the face with a softball.
  • My hair hides a scar I received in an attempt to intervene in a domestic dispute.

Arms:
  • I have tons of scar tissue on my elbows from playing sports when I was younger. There was lots of sliding, whether intentional or not.
  • On the inside of my right wrist I have a scar from a silly/fun night at the circus which ended with my wrist being impaled on a Cadillac antenna.
  • On the back of my left hand I have a series of battle scars that run up and down the hand.
  • On my left forearm I can just make out the scar from a bicycle accident years and years ago.

Legs:
  • Random scar tissue from sports.
  • Over my right kneecap there is a scar from the day I fell "up" the stairs in high school. Nasty stuff. I went to the restroom and pulled down my jeans and my kneecap came with it. *shudder*

Torso:
  • Chickenpox scars.
  • Just above my breast there is another scar from a cat.
  • And my work of art scar, the one only a select few have seen... a surgical scar from one hip to the other at the "bikini line".

Lol, well insurance helped on some, Military helped on others. The rest, well....

When I was around 7 years old my right ear was completely bitten off by a Dog because I threw his ball that he had in his mouth. But they did sew it back on, with the help of leaches it actually got back to circulating again, so my ear is still there.

I have 2 toes that were cut off in high school metal shop, but once again, a class mate threw them in a cooler and the Army hospital sew them back on,

And that's just for starters lmao...

SCARS I OWN

Body:

*Top Surgery and Recent Cancer Scare

*Hysto. Surgery (I felt like I was gutted like a pig)

*Chix Pox Scars all over my body because I had it when I was 28 yo

*Arms, Legs, and Hands from various sports injuries

*Chin Scar from when I walked thru a screen door and fell down 3 steps

*Scars from shots I got as an infant

*Nasty Scar on my left index finger when I cut it with the lawn mower blade

*Nasty Scar on my right hand from when I sanded my skin when I was trying to paint the fence & deck (man did that hurt something fierce)

Mental:

Rockinonahigh 06-06-2010 10:32 AM

OH those mental scars..I do have a fue of those as well. One thing I have managed to deal with as I have aged is over time they or some dont matter as much as they once did as in one way or another I reclaimed my power over them. But there are some that as hard as I try dont stay burried deep enought for me to file them away in the "go away zone",these are the ones that are mosr recent over the last fue years,im still working on them for the most part its geting better but may never completly go away.

NJFemmie 06-06-2010 10:40 AM

I have stitches on the top of my head from when I was about 5. I apparently pulled on an iron cord and the iron landed on my head. (yeah, yeah, no comments please).

I have a scar on my neck from surgery. A bad case of strep throat veered off and became a serious neck infection. They had to drain it to remove the infection before it reached my heart. I affectionately refer to it as my "frankenfemme" scar.

I have a tiny scar on my left thumb from when my dad accidentally cut my finger while I was holding a loaf of bread for him. The running joke in my house shortly afterwards was that my dad was trying to make us look like twins. (He was missing his left hand) (We have a sick sense of humor).

I have a very faint scar on my right arm from when I punched through double paned glass. Originally it was about 8 inches long, but now you can barely see it. (Don't ask).

Diva 06-06-2010 10:53 AM

I have 2 8" scars of which I am most proud:

~The one from navel to the top of my hairline which opened me up to bring Melody Claire into the world.

~The other is across my lower abdomen which allowed Erin Parker to discover the world.

The other tiny scars are insignificant and unimportant compared to my two favorite ones. :)

theoddz 06-06-2010 11:04 AM

My knees are both all scarred up from a total of 5 surgeries, including 3 arthroscopies (left has had 2, right has had 1), a major reconstruction on the left, and both knees have now had total joint replacement. I also have 3 inch scars on the outside of both ankles from where I had congenital Haglund's Deformities corrected. I also have 2 small scars, one on my right rib and the other a little right of my spine, where I had 2 lipomas (cysts) surgically removed. Of course, now I also have two long scars across my chest, which are fading out nicely, from my top surgery, a year ago.

Then I have a long horizontal scar on my right lower abdomen from an appendectomy in '83. :|

~Theo~ :bouquet:

Blade 06-06-2010 11:08 AM

I don't have any battle or otherwise scars, I try to make a habit of not hurting me and certainly not drawing blood on myself.:cigar2:

BAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Yall do remember the "My first stitches story" that happened in April right? LOL I'll relay more battle wounds later.:cherry:

Good topic Blaze, I think this what you describe is actually called "two ships passing in the night" where you are telling a story about your scar and people aren't really listening to you they are already planning their part of the conversation although it is only in a small way relative to your story. This was an exercise we used in some of my psych classes. To help us learn to be better listeners.:phonegab:

Ms. Tabitha 06-06-2010 04:47 PM

I have a scar, belly button down from my hystorectomy which has made me cancer free since Oct of 1999.
I have a small scar for my appendectomy removal.
One small scar by my belly button and one on my right rib cage from when I had my gallbladder removed.
My left forearm bottom side from when I put my arm through a plate glass window at 17, I missed the door latch.
On my right knee is a small scar from my Grandmothers corner China cabinet which met It's untimely demise and all it's contents of fine China were lost during a fight between my cousin and I.

Of course the scars I am most proud of, are the ones I recieved from my son and my three daughters!

suebee 06-06-2010 04:58 PM

Yup! Got a bunch of them. Still alive and able to walk. That's all that's important. Character-builder? Isn't everything?

I limped home with blood pouring from my crotch and my mother took one look at me and started her you're a woman now period spill.
I was given a pad and a speech and she never even looked at it. :sighs:

Lady Pamela 06-09-2010 06:30 PM

I personally have come to terms with my scars but I do not wear them as a badge...Actually they came with much hardship untill I accepted me for me.

I was cut from almost the top of my back, around my right side to my hip. Also in front from hip to hip when I was three.

They have shortened some yes since then. But due to other issues the hip to hip one had to be re- opened.

I absorbed my twin and due to toxic issues..The extra parts had to be removed.

Also at 16 I was in a fire but those only I can see...smiles Unless they are pointed out.

I later went on to be a dancer reguardless of the scars...And did well...Which helped me to heal inside as well.

Luv 07-10-2010 09:53 AM

I think its both,,either was there are lotsa stories about how ya got em. I've had 12 surgeries,,there is always a story. :)

Stearns 07-10-2010 11:24 AM

Not so much character-building, as "unique identifiers". Kinda like dental records or fingerprints... Anyway, here's mine:

Left knee - surgery for cartilage torn at the gym

Chin - racing my bicycle and the kid I was racing turned his front wheel into my back wheel b/c I was beating him. I went over the handlebars and chin- planted on the asphalt.

Right ankle - the pedal on my banana-seat bicycle would slip off, and the pedal frame gouged out my skin.

Left elbow - surgery scar from another bicycle mishap. Chain broke, I was thrown off, broke my elbow.

Inner right forearm - scar from a hot mini-bike muffler

Left leg - a neighborhood dog attacked my dog and I stepped in between them. Took it in the calf.

Right ankle - Burglar alarm call. Dog didn't appreciate me being in its yard to check on the house.

Chest - surgery

Neck - surgery for herniated discs

Back - cyst removed

Right shoulder - rotator cuff repair. Tore it at the gym.

Right knuckle - sliced by glass that fell out of a picture frame

Lower abdomen - Removal of organs that should have never been there in the first place

Right hip - didn't realize the tail of my shirt was in the flame of a candle and it caught on fire and burned me

Forehead - small star-shaped scar from falling on brick steps when I was 3. Although my mother forbade me to run up and down our front steps, I did it anyway. I just NEEDED to.

I think that's everything.

JustJo 07-10-2010 12:23 PM

Reading this thread makes me realize that, for age 48, I am remarkably unscarred.

I have a tiny one on my chin, where I cracked it open and needed stitches (twice!) at the age of 5 or 6.

Right knee...vertical scar about an inch long...getting it pinned and dragged along a fence by a horse that preferred not to cooperate.

And it's not a scar, but I have an extremely annoying ganglian cyst on my left wrist...looks like a lump under the skin (ick) from over-stressing the joint when I renovated my office. That one will be going when I can psych myself up enough to do it... (fraidy cat here)

That's it. :cheesy:

As far as scars on other people...I look at them the same way I do wrinkles or grey hair...just a part of who they are, and part of what we accumulate as we live. :)

lipstixgal 07-10-2010 12:45 PM

I have a scar on my left leg from total knee replacement surgery but I think that's about it for me. Unless I have to have any more surgeries. OH yeah I have scars from countless picc lines and groschon catheters that they placed in me while I was recuperating from Lyme's disease!!

Isadora 07-10-2010 12:48 PM

I have several scars

My right hand has lots of little scars from being a baker. Oven scars.

My right knee has had laproscopic surgery. I had a torn medial and lateral meniscus and a torn ACL. I had the meniscus repaired but I did not replace the ACL. Dance. Years of it. I still dance. I will dance even in my chair someday if I haveta.

Left leg. Shaving. Straight razor. Enough said.

Left Side of my Chin. My mother in a fit of rage hit me with a skillet. Think Joan Crawford on speed.

Internal. Too many to count. Mostly healed and loving life.

Corkey 07-10-2010 02:43 PM

My list
Both knees, I had gauze for knee caps from riding me bike.

left knee arthroscopic surgery tore medial and lateral collateral ligaments

right shoulder blade from a knife an idiot placed there, in the AF. He was the worse for wear.

left fore finger tin can cut, a little cayenne pepper and good as new.

left thumb dog bite

right shoulder bursa sack cleaned out

lower abdomen tumor removed.

scar on top of my head from a trailer window, It has become a cowlick.

forgot the one on my left wrist from climbing down the face of Sandia Mountain.

dixie 07-10-2010 03:08 PM

My entire body is a monument to battle scars...lol

My fav... nice size scar over my left eye...went to battle with the sharp corner of a coffee table when I was a toddler...yes, the table won...

back of my hand....top rack of a hot oven when I was 12

knuckle of ring ringer...broke a glass while washing dish the same day as the hot oven

SAME damn finger...a lovely round scar from falling into a semi-catatonic state while holding a marlboro

palm of right hand...stuck it to a hot stovetop when I was 7 (i think i was a kind of ignorant child...)

pointer-finger... "blood sisters for life" ritual of bffs in 3rd grade...lol

both knees...didn't listen well to the paramedic who was teaching our 4th grade class CPR/first-aid, when he said "Don't run on the pavement to the building" (yeah, once again...ignorant child...lol)

toe...dropped a razor in the shower *snicker*

ear...I had the top of my ear pierced when my son was 1...he got the sleeve of his fuzzy flannel pjs stuck to the stud of the 2 day old piercing, and yanked before I could stop him...I re-pierced it thru the scar...

entire body... I, too, had trouble not scratching at the chicken pox i finally got, on my 16th BIRTHDAY, no less...ugh...

A few that were inflicted by the abuse of others....

Numerous, uncountable other scars that were self-inflicted with fingernails and sharp objects to match the inner scars made by those "demons" that tend to haunt me...pretty self-explanatory on that one... :(

Leigh 07-10-2010 04:07 PM

My gallbladder scar, the new one, is longer than the old one but is healing nicely :)

Oiler41 07-10-2010 04:46 PM

Okay, I'll play:

One hidden by my hair on my head from a connection of my head to a Volkswagen windshield and one on my right shoulder blade from same,

One on my neck from an anterior cervical fusion of C5-C6,

Right arm: triple-cut on top from working at UPS, carpel tunnel release on the palm from same, middle finger from slamming a car door on it as a kid, across the wrist from shoving my hand through a storm door as a kid, back of arm from working on the brakes of my truck way back when, and inside my forearm from accidentally stabbing myself with a lit cigarette.

Left arm: on top from a burn while in the oil refining business, tip of middle finger on each side from shooting a nail through it.

Various and sundry little "spots" all over both arms from sun poisoning multiple times over the years.

Two appendix incisions, one vertical one horizontal; it was in the wrong place and they didn't have time to look before surgery.
Side to side across the abdomen from a full hysterectomy (YAY!)
Across by spine mid-back from the removal of three cysts and two old incisions (the first two cysts) resulting in one long incision.

Right knee from yet another accidental cigarette burn,

Along the side of my left big toe where my toe was cut off and moved over to compensate for a bunion I had at 30 that I shouldn't have had until 70.

I'm sure there are other smaller ones that I really don't remember where they came from, but these are the ones I know the story for. I suppose some of them add character to the appearance of the skin, but they are all good for a story now and again, lol.

Glynn

princessbelle 07-10-2010 06:26 PM

Left wrist tiny fingernail scar......4th grade Libby Burdine scratched me after I pinched her for cutting line while waiting to get our pencils sharpened.

Under hairline for going head first through the windshield at 16 when a drunk driver hit me head on.

A wasp sting on my left forearm left a tiny scar and that was 5 years ago.

Thinkin that's it.

Corkey 07-10-2010 07:24 PM

Oh hell I forgot 2 more

Lower right back, neuro stimulator implant

Right hip battery implant for neuro stimulator. (out of sight out of mind)

Methinks the ciggies are out to get you too. You should move and not leave them a forwarding address. :)
