National Novel Writing Month

November is national novel writing month. Are you brave enough?
I am...I think. I've already got the planning under way and come Tuesday I shall write.

SoNotHer 10-26-2011 08:43 AM

I say go for it, "Typewriter Boy" :-) What is your first line?

Please, please, please.. promise me it's not "It was a dark and stormy night.."

hottprof 10-26-2011 08:48 AM

There is actually a website for the novel writing month, you sign up and keep track of your words....

http://www.nanowrimo.org/

good luck to all the writers out there... break a pencil ;)

dark_crystal 10-26-2011 08:49 AM

i am tempted but i need to get over it!!!!
i work f/t, work on Master's p/t AND we are moving in November

wolfbittenpoet 10-26-2011 08:55 AM

No Linus it's not "It Was A Dark and Stormy Night". Though like Snoopy I am occasionally a fan of my own work.

Slater 10-26-2011 09:30 AM

I am thinking of giving it a go this year. University Book Store in Seattle is also doing a contest where they will print and sell the best local nanowrimo submission, so that's a bit of an extra little carrot.

Tempting....I did this a few years ago and wrote a fantasy for big kid/tweens. It was a great experience (even though I keep vowing to finish editing, getting illustrations and publishing it).

I'd love to do it again, but November is going to be insane for me.

Hmmmmm.....decisions....

tapu 10-26-2011 10:02 AM

You're supposed to write an entire novel, of presumably "standard" length, in one month?

50,000 words (about 1500 per day). Ideally a fiction novel but it's open (there are different categories and it's left to individuals to decide what best suits their "writing").

SoNotHer 10-26-2011 10:11 AM

Yeah, I think some of my students do this texting. They're channeling Kerouac of course. ;-)

dreadgeek 10-26-2011 10:51 AM

I think I'm going to try this this year. I haven't attempted a novel-length work in 20 years after losing a manuscript 2/3rds of the day through. I have a science fiction espionage novel that's been rattling around in my head for the last couple of years that I think I'm finally ready to try to get on the page.

Cheers
Aj

Spontaneous prose at it's finest. I'm pretty certain the second part of Big Sur could of been done on twitter.

Medusa 10-26-2011 03:44 PM

I did it about 3 years ago and gave it a half-ass attempt last year. I'm in this year!

Friend me over there! I'm "medusagoddess"

tapu 10-26-2011 03:54 PM

The only good writing is re-writing. --I forget who but someone I agree with, about this anyway.

Is all the planning and character development done beforehand--officially?

Is there then just one draft?

I could probably look all this up. But I want you guys to explain it to me, if you will. I always have follow-up questions, you know?

Nanowrimo leaves it up to you. I think that "officially", you are supposed to just write but I have seen several people talk about doing character sketches beforehand or laying out a storyline.

I'll be writing something that has been rattling around for a while.

You just get one draft and many folks treat it as their rough draft. The point is to get people to write!

tapu 10-26-2011 04:01 PM

Surprisingly, I have no follow-up questions.

Thanks, Medusagoddess. Mmm.

LeftWriteFemme 10-26-2011 06:37 PM

Okay, made an account.......I'm in!

seashell 10-26-2011 07:10 PM

Man, I haven't participated in this in a long, long time—particularly since college got in the way, but... even with two theses due by the end of next semester, I am totally going for it next month! *fist pump*

always2late 10-26-2011 07:19 PM

I am using Yarny to write this year. It's an in browser cloud system and is free. It is great really. They will have an offline mode coming soon.

Midnight 10-27-2011 09:46 PM

Soft*Silver 10-27-2011 10:11 PM

Oh I am SO in this year! I signed up. MissTia is my name over there too. Tomorrow I investigate the site and see what I need to do to begin. I am already registered so friend me!

wolfbittenpoet 10-29-2011 12:15 PM

So is everyone ready for Tuesday. I've been doing a bunch of outlining and research. I find myself approaching this like my normal freeform writing. I actually am organized.

purepisces 10-29-2011 01:55 PM

I just signed up. I'm purepisces there, too.

Linus 10-29-2011 02:00 PM

If you've signed up and use a handle different than what's here, let everyone know (unless you want to stay hidden -- which is perfectly fine).

I'm under the handle of Syrlinus

Midnight 10-31-2011 07:48 PM

Ive started wooohooo! Now just to keep the momentum going! :hangloose:

Daywalker 10-31-2011 08:38 PM

Good Luck to Everyone!

:hangloose:

I got my Certificate for NaNo in 2007!

:writer:

I broke the 50,000 words with Poetry/Prose, Short Stories and my
one and only Non-Fiction closed out the Novel.
That one was 26,000 words by itself.
:|

It just so happened that was the year the Event that Spawned
'Send the Pain Below' occured. Anyway, my hands and mind are not
working together right now. I am doing a bit of writing for a new short
story series, and thank the stars for a couple of good folks in our
Community who Gifted me with the Red Dragon program
or posts like these and short stories...etc...would
not be happening right now.
:vigil:

Stay Fluid!

:praying:

wolfbittenpoet 11-01-2011 01:12 PM

Hope everyone is on their way. I spent a fair bit this morning knocking out a bit over 5k of words. I was on a roll. It's a bit fractured right now but I'm breaking down things a touch tinier.

Medusa 11-01-2011 04:58 PM

I've written my synopsis and have ideas boiling over! I plan to sit down tonight just before bed with a good cup of tea and some headphones to bang out a couple thousand words.

Good luck, everyone!!

Galahad 11-01-2011 07:42 PM

I'm off to a slow start. I understand we don't upload until the 25th? So what do we do until then? Just check in for the pep talks, advice and stuff?

We write! got to get those 50,000 words down between the 1st and 30th of Nov.

Happy writings everyone :)

Medusa 11-01-2011 08:18 PM

I'm snot to get my cup of tea and tackle some word-birds ;)

SweetJane 11-01-2011 08:32 PM

Good luck everyone who joined NaNoWriMo. It's a great exercise in writing discipline.

I've never done this officially, but I did write a trilogy last year between February and May. The first book in the trilogy will be published next year.

I write on my own schedule. When I'm working on a novel, it so consumes me so much nothing else matters. I'll be in that mode later this year because I have the third book in another trilogy that my publisher really wants to see and I haven't a clue what will happen in that one!

Happy Writing.

wolfbittenpoet 11-01-2011 08:47 PM

Okay well I'm down to a bit over 2k of words because in my over enthusiasm this morning I forgot to save stuff so I rewrote. But I think I like my rewrite better. Hope everyone is having fun.

Midnight 11-01-2011 09:17 PM

Ok Im over 4000 now. Being in Oz I'm a day ahead of you guys too. Coffee and chocolates are wonderful :eatinghersheybar:

Medusa 11-01-2011 10:23 PM

Day 1 - 1659 words. It's clean so far and I wouldn't change a thing.

I started out this way the last couple of times with good, tight writing for the first couple of days. By day 15, it will be jangly and bockety like a shopping cart with a bad wheel but it's the motion that counts, right? :)

always2late 11-01-2011 11:21 PM

Got close to 3K words down. I think this will be good for me...with school and exams and everything else that gets in the way, I talk myself out of writing. This is good discipline for me to stick with it.

Medusa 11-02-2011 09:54 PM

I did a little over 1000 words today and am pretty damn happy with it so far. I really need to be averaging about 1600 per day but the quality right now is good so Im satisfied.

Here's to zombie novels!
