Please--Emergency Super Bowl Help!

Tiny Son has become obsessed with football. I don't know why I'm surprised. I mean, I was married to an Ohio State line coach, slept with the Packers' current defensive coordinator, and dated two San Diego Charger cornerbacks, but all that was before Tiny Son was born! And none of them were the donor! :poc-lol:

Now, Tiny Son has invited 4 friends over to watch the Super Bowl. I got Giants plates and napkins and cups. I planned for healthy and unhealthy snacks. We figured we'd move the big flat-screen TV he got from Grandpa for Christmas out into the living room.

And that's when I realized the problem: we don't have cable. We have a TV only for use with the Wii. We can't stream football from online onto our TV. We have no Super Bowl.

SO. Can anyone help me with suggestions or information? Like, can I pick up FOX though the air anymore or did that go the way of "party lines"? Can I buy just the Super Bowl anywhere? Can I.... ??? Help! Anything!

Thanks, tapu

The Super Bowl is on NBC this year. Sometimes you can just pick up local affiliate channels like that by making sure your tv is plugged in and turned on. It is not a PPV event. You can also watch it on your computer streaming it live.

Scuba 01-30-2012 08:00 AM

Check first with the local stations in your area to make sure you can pick up their digital broadcasts. If you are within their range, you will need to buy a digital receiver for your TV (unless it already has one) in order to pick up local stations such as FOX. Best Buy or Radio Shack can help you with this. It's simple and you will get all non-cable, local stations that are broadcasting in digital.

Good Luck!!

tapu 01-30-2012 08:55 AM

Ah. Both posts very helpful. I'm going to go play around with the tv now and see how it bears out. back soon.

thank you!

Not to be a party pooper but...

Wasn't the super bowl last Sunday?

Parker 01-30-2012 09:00 AM

If your TV is newer than 2007 (which it sounds like it is) then you shouldn't need a digital converter as TVs made after that are required to have a digital tuner built-in; so check your TV channels before spending the money on a converter. :winky:

Princess,

I only know this because I get Entertainment Weekly: it is on February 5th, next Sunday and yes, it usually is in January.

Hugs:)

LOL. Yeah, i have since been told it has not been played yet. But, truly that was my original thought.

Tapu, the position you are in is sooooooooooo something i would get myself into. To add to that, as i've stated, i would most likely have the party on the wrong week anyway.

I'm glad you are getting some good advice here. This site is just a plethora of knowledge.

I stand corrected:

Year Super Bowl Sunday
2009 February 1
2010 February 7
2011 February 6
2012 February 5
2013 February 3
2014 February 2

These are great stats to remember. I did know it was always cold when they played.

Gosh, it seems like everyone has been going on and on about this for forever. I just assumed it was over by now. But, i've been at work the last few days and haven't watched TV.

Ok, now we are all on the same page. Again, plethora of knowledge around here. I will hold my head high knowing i am no long "football challenged".

girl_dee 01-30-2012 09:47 AM

Excuse me please but aren't there laws against serving healthy food on Super Bowl Sunday?

would have to see anyone getting arrested.

And by "healthy," I mean the regular, green Mt. Dew, not the amped up blue one.

Confuse us??? HA!!!!

Like THAT could be done.

Did you find out if you can get that box and get the game yet?

We are very worried and i agree with Sassy and i'm glad you are going "green" for the famous day and event.

That's the spirit!!!!

What time are we to show up? I will wear colors for both teams so i will be a winner either way.

tapu 01-30-2012 10:06 AM

Good news for you, Princess!! Their colors are the same! Which means I really won't know who is who doing what, but I have learned to just smile enigmatically until someone gives me a clue as to what just happened. (Can other people really find the ball in those action scenes??)

As for you all coming, OMG, now that would be worth all this. Of course, Tiny Son would die a thousand deaths, but at least Mama would have a good time with it.

Hollylane 01-30-2012 10:10 AM

Visually, I always have a hard time when the teams are wearing similar colors on one half of their uniforms, whether tops or bottoms. But I stare really really hard, because I want to know everything that happens.

tapu 01-30-2012 10:15 AM

So... let me get this straight... you're saying it's knowable??

Hollylane 01-30-2012 10:17 AM

I am really into it, yes it is all knowable, and if you don't understand a play, penalty, rules etc...Google it! The more I know about the game, the more entertaining it is. :)

Parker 01-30-2012 10:19 AM

I loved football when I played and I love watching highlights, but I can rarely sit through an entire game anymore - unless forced to. lol :winky:

Ick. No. I was in the marching band, Flag Captain. The only boy that I dated in H.S. was a Quad player...I only liked the Friday night games because it got me out of the parent's iron claws, and me and my best "friend" had "pizza" after the game.

princessbelle 01-30-2012 10:31 AM

I LOVE football.

or rather...

I love GOING to football games/parties. You don't really have to know a lot about the game honestly. Just shout and squeal when someone that is for your team does. It's a win win.

I'm in a college town where people literally bleeeeeeeeeed the color orange around here. I am less than 3 miles from the stadium.

Bach when my Dad was alive, we had huge football parties at his house. Always full of people screaming and shouting and food everywhere!! It was exciting and fun and you get to dress in your teams colors including hair ribbons, earrings, socks. I have attained so much orange over the years i look like a blinding neon sign when i put on all the garb. Which, without the parties anymore, what's the point.

But, yeah football can be fun.

HA - I was a band geek too - in fact, my dad owned the only music store in town. lol

tapu 01-30-2012 10:37 AM

I was just a druggie in high school....

None of the "football boyfriends" were, though. Can you imagine Dom Capers doing drugs?

Cheerleader here and married the football "star", but *gasp* from the other high school team. It was totally gross.

I wanted to marry the girl's softball catcher. Now, she was hot!!!!

At least she and i did get rather acquainted.

you give the best advice--i especially like the part about the tv being plugged in. :hk14:

Toughy 01-30-2012 11:04 AM

ESPN or NBC may be streaming it live on their website. If they are and you have a newer computer and a newer TV you can hook up the live stream from computer to your TV.....you would need hdmi (I think that's what it's called) cable to connect puter to tv.

Estella 01-30-2012 11:22 AM

ESPN

I was on a cruise last year (With my mother. I know.) and had to watch my beloved Packers win the Superbowl on ESPN. Evidently, there are no local networks in the Pacific. Which would have been fine, but ESPN doesn't carry all the nifty commercials.

tapu 01-31-2012 10:12 AM

All right, I'm headed out to Radio Shack to check out antennas and HDMI cable. Those people always fuckin' know a little too much--I'll let them take it from here.

While I'm hoping to pull it in locally with an antenna, I can fall back on streaming it through my computer. The only drag there is that it often gets pixilated or whatever and it's like watching football through an aquarium.

I'll report back here re: success or failure. Thanks, everyone, for the help... and the entertainment. Princess, you wouldn't still have your cheerleading uniform, would you?

Oh good!!!! Well, let us know we all wait on baited breath. It is now important that we know you get that game.

Yes, i have a couple. I will not disclose whether or not i can fit into any of them still NOT.

However, wanna borrow one for the big game? I can send one UPS with the pompoms.

Just make sure you post pics please.

tapu 01-31-2012 10:39 AM

:dots:

Don't say "pom-poms." Don't even be thinking about "pom-poms" anywhere near tapu. Did you know that "pom-poms" in Maori means "do-not-never-be-touched-to-the-tapu"?
