"Before I die, I want to........."
Syr sent me this video (thank you!)... i loved the project that Ms. Chang did. Being from my beloved, sad home town of New Orleans it hit home twice as much. Please take about 3 minutes to listen.
In her New Orleans neighborhood, artist and TED Fellow Candy Chang turned an abandoned house into a giant chalkboard asking a fill-in-the-blank question: “Before I die I want to ___.” Her neighbors' answers -- surprising, poignant, funny -- became an unexpected mirror for the community. So many answers were posted to her questions... i couldn't come up with just one thing to fill in the blank for myself, so as an ongoing thread maybe we can share our *Before I die I want to _________* answers. These answers are not up for debate or judgment. They are what they are, so please don't go there. Discussion probably doesn't need to happen, just fill in the blank as often as you wish. This thread has my wheels spinning and while this is a question I think I have considered the answer to a few times, it seems like I can never make up my mind...Here is a list..for starters...not even close to done.
Before I die I want to... - Forgive and be forgiven - Know my youngest siblings and nephew have found love and happiness. - Sit under a sky lit up by the Aurora Borealis - Actually make my Abuelita's tamales by myself. (Can't bring myself to do it just yet) - Help- not sure in what way just yet. But I want to really help and anonymously make a difference in someone's life. - Experience the kind of love that not even a Pablo Neruda poem can describe - Learn how to swim :/ - Run a marathon - Visit Serendipity - Eat mole by Rick Bayless - See the world :) |

Before I die, I want to KNOW that I have mattered in this life. I "kinda know" it, but that always seems to be a long way from that in-the-heart-and-gut-KNOWING it. When I was 13 my mom died, and the number of cars in her funeral procession just blew me away. Somehow this woman who was just my mom MATTERED to a great deal of people.
Before I die I want to travel more. I want to take Denise up to Omaha and show her where I grew up, the streets I played in, the schools I attended, the stores I shopped in and the restaurants I ate in. I want to visit my mom & dad's grave again. And then I want to go see places around this country and this world that we haven't seen before, to experience them together. Before I die, I want to take down that "dream box" that sits up on my closet shelf, filled with all my "if only" dreams, and work to make them come true. "If only I had lots of money I would ________." One of my dreams was to write a book. I would also like to travel around the country in an RV, taking pictures of beautiful places and things, and sell the pics to a travel magazine. LOL Or else use the pictures in a calendar! |

Buy a house in the woods like where I grew up and live there... Earn my doctorate degree and be working in the field I love... Forgive myself for regrets and live free from guilt... Learn that I shouldn't have to prove my worth... Quit being so damn hard on myself!! |
