Studio Visit: New Model
A ring at the door, putting down my tool I go answer it. The new model has arrived, I'm glad. Guiding her into my studio, I show her where she can remove her clothes. I've petitioned off a small part of my studio for the models to have a space. She follows me quietly. I go to another stand and prepare for a new beginning. The new model comes into the studio proper, nude, though that is not how I "see" her; I see her as her most natural Self. She waits for me to position the chair on the stand, it will be a sitting pose. I ask her name. "Elena.", she says. Elena, sixty-five years old, Russian, and a writer. Now in this country making ends meet by doing artist modeling. I "see" her, and want to sculpt her pain, her confidence, her sense of knowing that none of it matters, and all of it matters. Her "knowing" is etched on her face, her body. I don't ask of the pain. I already know it. I ask about the days of sunshine, and joy in her Russia, of her writing, how is it coming?
