dark_crystal notebook: poetry class Spring '14
 

(Partly because I could not face another 15-page term paper), I chose to take a creative writing class this semester

(I am on the 6-year plan: one class per semester, eventual MA in Literature: Professional Writing sub-plan)

(taking my time because this is a back-up, back-pocket Master's, have no plans to leave the library field if I can help it-- but journalists are forever predicting our demise: if they say it often enough that people start believing it it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy)

(in which case my backup career choice is Public Relations and you need a writing degree)

Anyhoo I am going to post the poems I write for class in this thread

Week Three

i try never to think about genies
going back into bottles
but I'll admit to a certain wistfulness for the time when i wouldn't
have known your opinion of my worth without
our having engaged in a detailed and personal exchange

now
you share a line of code that says
you like this lawmaker that that wrote this bill that says
the legal status of my household
(completely invisible outside household)
is bad

now
you check in at a location
on the TV-picked day to support the location
whose chicken sandwiches
are threatened by people like me choosing to not eat them so long
as eating them helps people kill us

and you are my cousins
who've known me since birth
and hug me joyfully
and say let's get together!
and you like me and you like her and I even believe you're happy we have each other

It's a very special way
to break my heart
by waking up and logging on and seeing
