Photogs: Those who take 'em and those who love 'em
I figured it might also be nice to have a thread about photography, the art of, tricks and tips, sharing of photos, ideas, questions. Basically, anything and everything related to photography.
I have a nice Canon XSi and a smaller Canon Elph camera (thinking it may be time to retire this one and get a new one). Anyways, it's been a while since I've gone out to take photos on a regular basis and I think I need to get back into that habit. You can see what I did last year (and a few years before) from my flickr stream below. http://www.flickr.com/photos/syrlinus/show/ |

btw: I love Canon products! I have a Canon Rebel--but a 35mm--and am lusting after its digital counterpart (I hear that my lens will fit both). For easy shooting, though, I carry around a Canon PowerShot. |

I posted a couple of photos I took this week here in Toronto after playing with the F stop. My camera can only go as low as F5.6. Now, someone correct me: F stop is how long the frame stays open to allow light in, no? This means that nighttime photos come in clearer?
|
A lower f-number denotes a greater aperture opening, which allows more light to reach the film or image sensor.
Aperture is literally just the size of the hole allowing light in. Shutter speed is how long the image will be exposed to light. |

To add to an excellent post: When you have a lower f-stop(and wider aperture) you generally can have a shorter shutter speed because since more light is hitting the film at any given time you need less time(as stated above) and it can be super handy for no flash night picts that are not stationary or you can't use a tripod for. Add fast film and you have something formidable to play with at night. When you do use a lower f-stop though you will have a smaller depth of field; the range surrounding the plane of critical focus in which the focus is acceptably sharp. A low f-stop is a common technique used to get those shots in which part of someone/thing is in focus and everything in front of or behind them is very unfocused. My cameras are mostly manual 35mm SLR’s; on these there is color coding on the aperture adjustment ring that correlate the different f-stops to the distances on the focusing ring that give a general idea of what depth of fields will be available for what aperture settings. It might look very different on your cameras but it should have something. It isn’t hard to figure with a bit of play though. Maybe you know all this. I just pulled out my cameras after not looking at them for a number of years. It is fun and inspiring to see what you are doing!:chaplin: |
fantastic! a photographers thread.
I run a Nikon D100 - a seriously ancient work-horse of a camera, built like a tank (I'm sure I could substitute the camera for a hammer at DIY time)...Haven't been shooting much recently but when I am have a passion for exploring and shooting abandoned buildings like this at East Sussex Asylum http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3307/...af9365c72b.jpg in 2008 I undertook a 365 project which meant I took a self portrait every day, this allowed me to be a 'bit daft' whilst having the excuse of taking pictures of said 'daftness' :cheesy: a bit like this - that's me on the left http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2702/...b73361e444.jpg my girl is the serious photographer in the house, she comes from the fine art side of things and uses medium format film more often than not. I hope you have fun playing around with the aperture/shutter/iso stuff on your camera Linus. |
infared -
using an old tank :) i like old building photography with creepers growing on the outside, cemetery tombstones "floating" on high grass", statuary, and fixtures of all sorts - infared makes things a little more interesting.
i am thinking of minor white right now :stillheart: food photography is of interest to me also. http://www.nature-photography-centra...otography.html http://www.vasculata.com/minor_white.htm |

reappearances - photog/painting/drawing - what's yours ?
i really like the repetition of arches - branch, cloud-scape/sky, land-plant scape- and bridge, odarlin :)
structures/surfaces - tactical/tacit/tactile ! in water, cloud, tree, bridge - some are rooted in a sense of permanence, while others appear momentary, a glimplse. a breeze may change direction of things above and below- and the reflection captures both. |

this may totally be the wrong place to post this, but what the hell.
i haven't been shooting much, but have begun to edit some stuff. i have a couple of new images here. feedback is always welcome. |
I really like your cloud photos little man.
Don't have much time to shoot myself these days, too busy teaching others how to do it but I hope to get some projects underway when work eases up in May. |
I have sporadically shot NY through a cell phone camera. A bit of retouching vis a vis photoshop to either add otherwise benign artistic interpretation or embellish what already existed.
Prior to the digital revolution, I would do "drive by" shootings using cheap disposable b/w cameras and have them developed on color paper. Very cool imagery as a result. I guess I'm still doing that in some respect using a cell phone camera. I really dig the iPhone camera's output! Creates very cool output. Alas, I am currently using "Hello Moto". Some of the imagery I've seen here on b.f.planet by those of you who are "shooters" is quite interesting and rather good. Cheers for Queers! |
ooh ooh ooh ME ME ME!

I've been interested in this for a long time, and a friend of Mine on another site takes amazing pictures so My interest has yet again been piqued. I would love to get a digital camera at some point, maybe even ask for one for My birthday, but I've been thinking about starting to get out more this spring/summer to not only enjoy the weather and nature but to take pictures as well. There is a beautiful park mere blocks from where I live and I haven't truly enjoyed it in awhile, this will only give Me more of a reason to do so ......... I can't wait :)

As an artist, I respect all forms and expressions of art. This is a wonderful thread.

hi. i stumbled upon this site earlier, and thought someone might benefit from reading on bird photography. the tips are realistic, and i agree with the author of the article- it's not necessary to spend a fortune on equipment.
passion, getting close to subject, having a lot of patience, timing, and lighting make all the difference. oh, and waders ;) http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/birds.htm |
Happy to find this thread! Thanks for getting it started. :)
I've been a photo hobbiest for about 17 years now. I love sharing what I see and how I see the world with others. I keep a few public things public here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristystreet/ |

I have a question: what lens do you use for most of your shots? |
Quote:
I used to have a larger zoom that I was fond of, but it broke. :sigh: |
|
So, what are you shooting this month?
Do you shoot film or digital? Why? |
i shoot both..digital and film....something about the smell of developing chemicals and the feel of a B/W negative between your fingers ...and doing it all in a "dark BAG" or dark room..that i just can not give up.
Tho i must admit digital is so much easier and faster...cheaper, simpler and with adobe i to can be ansel adams.... (opps my prejudice is showing) I use digital for simple pictures..family stuff....and all that.... when i am photographing for my personal artistic gratification i use my 35 mm or my 126 or will make a camera out of a shoe box and have some fun...... This month i am photographing the new grandchild.the old grandchild....the rhubarb....the strawberries, the worms, my roses as they grow.....and continuing on my not study....i am now at not anymore :byebye: |

The Elph I use when I want something quick or when I'm cycling (it's very light and easy for me to grab). The XSi is my dSLR and allows me to play and experiment with a variety of things. I'm thinking of perhaps investing (once in Cali) in a new all-purpose lens. The one I have is ok but I'm contemplating if a different one might serve me better (which one I don't know yet as I still need to research some more). |
Here is one of my favorite shots so far this year.

Hey photo friends *waves to little man and Freckle K*
i have been on & offing my two lens lately and it's getting tiresome. Freckle's 55-200 is great and she has a knack of capturing awesome shots in zoom mode. i found that Sigma has a nifty all purpose lens (18-200) i am thinking of adding to my gear bag. (we have an annual photo show in two weeks, might be good deals there). But then i also had my eye on the Sigma 2.8 28-135 for portrait work. Decisions Decisions. No it's not about decisions, it's about $$$$ Have a fab day all. |
went to the butterfly house with my sister. images here.

Quote:
I hear ya about the decisions vs $$$. Keep your eyes peeled; sometimes deals pop up when you least expect them. I wonder if there's a craigslist or swap meet style site specifically for used photo equipment.... When are we going to shoot again? That was fun!! |
