Metaphors & Music
While I realize that metaphors and music go hand in hand, sometimes I wonder, "What the Hell were they thinking???"
The song that inspired this thread is one I remember from childhood. My dad was/is a huge country music fan and I heard a bit of this song recently while standing in line somewhere. So, it got stuck in my head but made me think, "what other songs are out that have have taken use of a metaphor to another level-and not necessarily a good one?" I am posting lyrics, not videos because I think the lyrics are key here. Not that the videos might not be over the top too-but that is probably another thread. ;) :sparklyheart: |
Love In The First Degree by Alabama
Love In The First Degree
I once thought of love as a prison A place I didn't want to be So long ago I made a decision To be footloose and fancy free But you came and I was so tempted To gamble on love just one time I never thought I would get caught It seemed like a perfect crime Baby, you left me defenseless I've only got one plea Lock me away Inside of your love and throw away the key I'm guilty Of love in the first degree I thought it would be so simple Like a thousand times before I take what I wanted and just walk away But I never made it to the door Now babe, I'm not beggin' for mercy Go ahead and throw the book at me If lovin' you is a crime, I know that I'm As guilty as a man can be Baby, you left me defenseless I've only got one plea Lock me away Inside of your love and throw away the key I'm guilty Of love in the first degree Love in the first degree Oh yeah Oh yeah Baby, you left me defenseless I've only got one plea Lock me away Inside of your love and throw away the key I'm guilty Of love in the first degree Love in the first degree Oh yeah Love in the first degree Love in the first degree Oh yeah Love in the first degree Love in the first degree Love in the first degree Love in the first degree :sparklyheart: |

"Walking On The Moon"
Giant steps are what you take Walking on the moon I hope my legs don't break Walking on the moon We could walk forever Walking on the moon We could live together Walking on, walking on the moon Walking back from your house Walking on the moon Walking back from your house Walking on the moon Feet they hardly touch the ground Walking on the moon My feet don't hardly make no sound Walking on, walking on the moon Some may say I'm wishing my days away No way And if it's the price I pay Some say Tomorrow's another day You stay I may as well play Giant steps are what you take Walking on the moon I hope my legs don't break Walking on the moon We could walk forever Walking on the moon We could be together Walking on, walking on the moon Some may say I'm wishing my days away No way And if it's the price I pay Some say Tomorrow's another day You stay I may as well play Keep it up, keep it up |
I hope I'm playing right
"Candle In The Wind"
Goodbye Norma Jean Though I never knew you at all You had the grace to hold yourself While those around you crawled They crawled out of the woodwork And they whispered into your brain They set you on the treadmill And they made you change your name And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never knowing who to cling to When the rain set in And I would have liked to have known you But I was just a kid Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did Loneliness was tough The toughest role you ever played Hollywood created a superstar And pain was the price you paid Even when you died Oh the press still hounded you All the papers had to say Was that Marilyn was found in the nude Goodbye Norma Jean From the young man in the 22nd row Who sees you as something as more than sexual More than just our Marilyn Monroe |
There use to be a greying tower alone on the sea,
You became the light on the dark side of me. Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill. But did you know, That when it snows, My eyes become large and the light that you shine can't be seen. Baby! I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey. Ooh... the more I get of you, the stranger it feels yay yay... And now that your rose is in bloom, a light hits the gloom on the grey. There is so much a man can only tell you, so much he can say, You remain my pleasure, my power, my pain! To me you're like a growing addiction I can't deny, Won't you tell me is that healthy baby, why? But did you know, that when it snows, My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen, Baby! I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey. Ooh... the more I get of you the stronger it feels yay yay! Now that you rose is in bloom, a light hits the gloom on the grey. I've been kissed by a rose on the grey I've been kissed by a rose Kissed by a rose on the grey ....And if I should fall along the way, I've been kissed by a rose on the grey. |
I Am a Rock - Paul Simon
I Am A Rock A winter's day- in a deep and dark December I am alone- Gazing from my window to the streets below On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow. I am a rock, I am an island. I've built walls, A fortress deep and mighty That none may penetrate I have no need of friendship friendship causes pain It's laughter and loving I disdain I am a rock, I am an island Don't talk of love but I've heard the word before It's sleeping in my memory I won't disturb the slumber of the feelings that have died If I never loved I never would have cried I am a rock, I am an island I have my books and my poetry to protect me I am shielded in my armour Hiding in my room, safe within my womb, I touch no one and no one touches me. I am a rock, I am an island And a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries. |
"Stairway To Heaven"
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold And she's buying the stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for. Ooh, ooh, and she's buying the stairway to heaven. There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it makes me wonder. There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who stand looking. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it really makes me wonder. And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter. If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on. And it makes me wonder. Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, The piper's calling you to join him, Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind. And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold. And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll. And she's buying the stairway to heaven. |
