Maxwell Scott Anderson needs your support/prayers
I am passing along some very sad news. Well-known trans man, activist, speaker, my gender therapist and friend, Maxwell Anderson, is in the hospital for an inoperable brain mass (glioma). This is a very aggressive, rapidly growing tumor. Right now he and his family are trying to decide whether or not to pursue radiation which they have been told may shrink the tumor some but should only prolong Max's life for a short time.
If you don't know Max personally, you may know of him as Robert Eads' best friend as he was featured in the documentary, "Southern Comfort." I just spoke to Max on the 13th and he seemed good. (He'd had knee surgery in August and had recently returned to work) We made plans to have coffee next week. Last night I found that he collapsed at home on the 16th and was unable to get help until friends noticed he hadn't updated his facebook status and his phone was going to voicemail. This news has been been a shocking blow to his friends and to the trans community. If you would like to speak to Max or send a few words, the time is now. To send a card with your support, Max is in Neuro-ICU at Kennestone Hospital on Church St. in Marietta, GA. His room is in Green Tower… G-365. If you are in or near Atlanta and would like to visit, he can have 2 visitors at a time. However, no visitors are allowed during shift change (6:30-8:30am AND 6:30-8:30pm). This unit does not allow flowers. Cards go to: Maxwell Anderson c/o Kennestone Hospital 3 West ICU 677 Church St. Marietta, GA 30060 If you want to send or bring something for him, they are asking that you send a stuffed animal that can eventually be donated to Cobb County EMS or Sheriff’s Dept for kids who are involved in emergencies. It's been stated that Max loves stuffed animals and donated to this cause himself. He has been curled up with them in the hospital. If you would like to send some virtual support and/or prayers for Max, you can do that here as well as get updates on his condition: http://drmaxwellanderson.com/blog/2009/12/ Maxwell had been working on a project in pre-production called "Southern Comforted: Lives Touched by the Documentary". Please feel free to also use this space to share how either Max or Southern Comfort has touched your life. Let's honor him here. |

Hudson,
I will be praying for Max, his family, friends, and all. Thank you for sharing this news. Namaste, Andrew |
I just found this thread and wanted to bump it--in case others have not seen it.
Unfortunately, I have never met Max. But, Southern Comfort had--and continues to have--a profound effect on my life (and, seemingly, each person whom I share it with). I was really thrilled when I ran across his professional page (here), which shows a portion of his recent contributions. In addition, you can donate to his project (sequel to Southern Comfort) there. Sending hugs & love to Max's partner, friends, & family (f) |
August 26, 1956 – January 14, 2010
I wanted to update this thread. On January 14th, 2010 at 3:10pm, Dr. Maxwell Scott Anderson passed away in a peaceful rest. Thank you to all who posted here or sent comforting words to Max.
A Celebration of Life service for Maxwell Anderson will be held on January 20, 2010 at 7:00pm. The service will be at Gentle Spirit Christian Church, 601 W Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, GA officiated by Pastor Paul M. Turner. This is one of Dr Max's most recent speeches given at the this year's trans rally (which Max helped to organize) in Atlanta where he talks about different friends who have been brutally attacked, raped and/or denied care because of being trans. Ironically, I myself was assaulted the very next day on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion. Max fought hard for all of us. Looking back at this video, we never could have known we would be without him 6 months later. He left plenty of fight behind with us to pick up and carry on.
