Yours is most certainly a rhetorical question, but I'm going to answer it anyway since this is one of my pet peeves.
It's all about
shame. Shaming people for having (or being) big asses, for being divorced, for being gay, for not being gay... As you know, the list is endless.
The amount of money made from people being ashamed of what they do -- from tabloids to therapy -- is no joke.
Edits: Okay, my comments don't address the bat boy stuff, so somebody else is going to have to tell you what that's all about.
