Sugar.

Put a one or two TBS of granulated sugar on your tongue and press it to the roof of your mouth for about 30 seconds or so. The sugar will melt into a sweet goo that will coat the rough parts of your tongue and soothe the worst of the pain.

Don't argue; just do it. I keep a small bag of sugar in a ziplock just for this reason because sometimes pizza is too hot when I stuff it in my face.
