On this day in 1950, Althea Gibson became the first African-American (male or female) to compete at Forest Hills, a U.S. championship now known as the U.S. Open. Tennis, like baseball, was segregated and Althea played several years in the black American Tennis Association. She went on to win one French Open, two Wimbledons, and two U.S. Opens.
