My mother usually didn't buy them on the vine either. She didn't pick the stems off growing up we just ate other kinds. I don't know it for a scientific fact but she said buying them with the stem on keeps them fresh for a little bit longer so that's why some people we knew did. However not that much longer and besides in our house we used them up so fast it didn't really matter.
