6 hours. Woke up a few times but easily fell back asleep.

Lately when I can't fall back asleep I do an exercise that helps. I alphabetically name cities or states, countries, foods, first or last names, etc. Whatever I can use to create a list.

A-Albany
B-Bay City
C-Cooperstown
D-Detroit
E-...
F-...
G-...

Or

A-Apples
B-Blueberries
C-Cornbread
D-Dumplings
E-...
F-...
G-...

The rules I use that work for me are:
  • No lingering. Come up with an item name and move on to the next letter.
  • Do not think about how nice or bad a city is or how you need a spicy recipe for guacamole—none of that, just move on to the next letter or go back to finding a name for the letter you're stuck on.
  • Do not go to the next letter till you can name an item for the current letter.
  • No mixing categories on the list. If I start with American cities I stick with American cities. I don't change midstream and add states, countries, cities from another country, food, etc.

It's harder to do than it sounds because you're half asleep. The other night I was listing American cities and was stuck on D, of all letters. I kept thinking of Dorchester which is a neighborhood in Boston, but it's not a city I know of in the U.S. Finally, Detroit came to mind.

Anyway, it works for me and I usually fall back asleep.
