TRANSFEMINISM -Screening and Fundraiser September 25th
The Jersey Shore QSpot and the directors of the film/fundraiser presents four
short vignettes that follow the lives of four transgender women working as
activists fighting discrimination against gender non-conforming people, specifically focusing on people of color and poor people. Strong, confident, and in command of their own lives, the four subjects of this documentary are not the usual "victims" of trans stigma and exclusion. June Brown is the
Outreach Coordinator for Rainbow Heights where her duties include developing
relationships with local social service agencies, clinics, hospitals, residential and vocational providers who serve LGBT consumers with major mental illness. Maddie Deutsch runs a medical practice in Los Angeles providing health care and support groups to the trans community. Bamby Salcedo is the co-chair for the Los Angeles Prevention Planning Committee's Transgender Task Force, and is part of the Transgender Service
Provider Network. She also serves on the Advisory Board for the Gender Studies program at Minnesota State University. Miss Major is an activist with TGI Justice, a national prison abolition organization working with transgendered individuals caught up in the justice system. Miss Major also gives lectures and presentations around the world on transgender programming and legislation. In 2008, she testified to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland about the abuses of transgender women of color in the US.
